So after two long years of service, the cable above the left ear bud of my E500's has cracked. Because it is outside the two year limited warranty, I was wondering if it would be worth looking for someone to recable them or to send them to sure and pay for the repair. For anyone who has sent their 'phones into Shure beyond the 2 year mark... did you have to pay a $145 service fee as listed on their website? (http://www.shure.com/stellent/groups/public/@gms_gmi_web_us_pa/documents/web_resource/us_pa_doc_service_fees.pdf) Or is it likely that the repair or switch (by most accounts that's what they do) will cost less than that?

Looks like I am going to sell my K701 and M^3 for a transportable upgrade. At the moment I cam trying to decide between the Shure E500/E530 and the UE Triple.Fi. They are roughly the same price. I guess I am looking for musicality, while still retaining good detail retrieval. They will be used with my ZV:M (linout) -> Mini^3. Any experiences/suggestions?

I have been having pain in my left ear, I went to the Dr. and he said my ear was inflammed and gave me antibiotics. I stopped wearing headphones for a few weeks and my ear felt better. Yesterday I put my favorite headphones on (HD 600) and my ear began to hurt again. The pain is located around the tragus (towards nose not canal) it started with sensitivity to volume and higher pitches now it is just a pain relating to pressure from the headphones. The pain eventually goes away my concern is for the long term and am wondering the best way to proceed is (no more hd 600's oddly enough have read of 3 accounts incredibly similar to mine, moving towards speakers anyway . An…

Does anybody have any experience with any particular ear protector ear muff thingie for babies? A friend of mine is expecting twin girls. He's the house photographer for an NHL team. Thus, there is a trip to a hockey game in the kids' futures. I assume this would be for your basic making a fuss over the cute babies thing, since I can't really see why infant girls would want to see a hockey game, even with a good team, which the Panthers haven't been lately.

  6. I go through a pair of cheap Sony earbuds (DR-EX12IP) every 1-3 months. I didn't want to get something nicer for fear of them breaking after a month as well, but I'd like to give it a shot. I'm looking at Shure SE-215s. My main priority is durability. I am probably not likely to put them in a case when not using them. I know it's bad. But I use headphones at least 5 hours throughout the day (sometimes more), so it's easier for me to just keep them coiled in my pocket. The next priority is comfort. My ears are pretty small, so that could be an issue. And I don't know that Shure IEMs are really meant for the general public. Is there a more comfortable option out there? …

?140 and rising for a set of Micro Seiki electrostatics. Some people are clearly mad. I can only hope that Bidder 5 is a shill to get the price up and that the seller ends up paying ending fees for Bidder 5s winning bid. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=190172292479&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=009

Hi so i am making my own headphones, and i recently bought a 2.1 stereo surround sound amplifier. It has outputs for left, right and sub. My dilemma is this: should i try to do bridged mono to connect the sub output to the right output, and then seperately with the left outputs(and if so how) or should i split the sub and put two speakers in each side(and if so what is a good source for drivers. Thanks!

Gu Sensei's post of measurements of the SR-009s from a Japanese Stax thread raised some interesting discussion. While the measurements he posted are interesting as a conversation piece, there are questions about the quality of the data and methodology of the testing. The measurements are not nearly as useful as the type of through headphone measurements that our very own Tyll Hertsens has been making and posing over on the Inner Fidelity site. In the want for more objective data on stats, Tyll has graciously agreed to measure electrostats if we can send them out to him in Montana. The plan will be to coordinate people sending in their gear so that Tyll can measure…

  12. Hello! I am a new member of the forum. I am not a native English speaker. Hope you can understand my words. Are electrostatic headphones suitable for listening to rock and some metal music? I like listening to some bands like Lacirmosa, Metillac, Green Days, and The offspring. I also like listening to Haggard, Within Temptation, Nightwish, and some jap-rock. I want the headphone to have a good performance on vocals, especially the female vocals. I don't want the human vocals to be too far away or too thin. The bass is not the shortboard. The high pitch should not be too bright. Or I think I should use high here not high pitch. My English is very poor. 😢😢😢 I…

In many threads concerning electrostats I come cross opinions that "you must get used to the electrostatic sound" and suchlike... Now I'm in a process of exploring my new Omegas. So can anyone explain what are the peculiarities that we must get used to?

  14. Now here is something that has been out for a while but I've never really looked into. Now these carry a wide variety of names and there is a plethora of models but they are all pretty much the same, hybrid units with an electret driver to cover the top end and a regular dynamic driver for the rest of the spectrum. I decided it was time to look into this so I bought two units, the Mitchell and Johnson GL2 and some Cyberdrive unit for 30$ which looked the same as the GL2 minus the wood. The GL2 arrived first so some pics: Here the baffle which shows how the drivers are setup Small transformer and 10uf/50V NP cap are all there is to this and th…

I received a surprise package from Enigma Audio. I ordered three balanced cables some time ago, but I asked them to postpone shipping them to me until I had a balanced amp. Since my balanced amp is caught inside the SinglePower black hole space-time continuum, I forgot about these balanced headphone cables. When I saw the package, I thought that the box was a little big for a couple of ECC83 tubes, which I've been ordering recently. Surprise, surprise, upon opening the box I see the silver-gray anti-static bags with the Enigma Audio sticker. Fortunately, I hadn't forgotten what Enigma Audio was. I'm expecting to forget about what "SinglePower" is in a couple more mo…

  16. I was clicking on some old links to Walt Jung articles and it took me the the xpress homepage instead. I spotted this: http://audioxpress.com/article/New-Hybrid-Electrostatic-Headphones-and-Tube-Hybrid-Headphone-Amplifier-from-ENIGMAcoustics.html I don't know what to make of the headphones, but why is there only a render if they're supposedly due out in May? The Dharma D1000 headphone takes full advantage of ENIGMAcoustics’ SBESL (Self-Biased Electrostatic) technology, offering electrostatic transparency, focus, and inner detail without the need for an external energizer to provide a polarizing voltage. Instead, the bias voltage is derived from the signal itse…

So my Alessandro's are on majorrrr back order and I won't be getting those for awhile and my ears are curious about the ATH sound. Are there any entry level Audio Technicas that you would recommend to see if I would like their sound or not? Nothing expensive and I'd want to be able to have the ability to return them if I have to. Any suggestions?

  18. Started by Trav,

Had my T50 rp for about 3 weeks now. Maybe 70 hrs burn in thus far. Waiting on internal mods until my replacement pads come in. In the meanwhile i DL EQU for iphone/ipad and TBH these things with my amp have done a 180. I now have soundstage, improved dynamics and decay. Anyone else experience this? or should i simply put the pipe down? Trav

I have always found my ER6i to be lean in the bass, but enjoyable none the less... As of lately they have become bass mongrels. I'm tlaking crazy bass, especially for an Ety. Is this a sign that its time to change the filters?

Has anyone heard both the Aeon and Ether flow (closed back)? I have a pair of Aeon closed backs that I enjoy when I need to have closed headphones. I am thinking of trying the Ether flow since hoping it might be a bit more open sounding and neutral.

This is my first post on head-case, so I hope I'll get some helpful input without being judged too harshly. Intro: I used to own a pair of Martin Logan speakers Summit, paired with a 200W integrated amp from McIntosh. I sold the lot a few years ago as I moved to another continent... I've longed to get back to this sound ever since. I'm now looking for headphones that'll recreate somewhat (I know it's impossible) that ML sound. I've been into hifi for a while, and though not a professional myself, I've built some deep knowledge of how the market works. I've never had that much of a knowledge base about headphones however... but I have some serious reserve about t…
