Headphones

So, I've had these for a bit now, say 5 days. Those that used to lurk at H-F will probably know I detested disliked the K701's and managed to swap them for some dt-990-250's (2005) through some FS forum and ebay kung-fu. Currently using PowerMac (toslink or usb) -> 0404 usb (1/4" to old monster studiolink RCA) -> Glite w/ elpac -> dt-990's. I'm sure arguments could be made about the quality of my rig, but given budget constraints (and the roving eyes of the woman - thankfully the glite is tiny and the 0404 USB gets used for recording too), I think it is pretty damn decent. Since I already have a pair of rs-1s, anyone think it would be worth owning a set of these too? Anyone want to compare them and stuff? How are they different?

I've had a couple weeks or so to get used to my RS-1, so far I'm really happy with it and it has for the most part replaced my heavily modified K340 as my main headphone. I guess I'll give a summary of the larger differences for now and then go on to cover other things. Headroom: The RS-1 can play a hell of a lot louder without sounding strained. If I push my K340 it'll start sounding a little plasticky and echoey, and if I want to play Slayer at earbleed volumes it goes to crap. All this time, I never bothered to take off the earpad, but once I did, I found TWO layers of substantial foam between the driver and the mesh. My camera is MIA, but one is a round piece of foam, and the other is another round piece with a small hole in the middle. These are what gives K701 that strange sensation of detailed yet kind of detached sound b/c once you take the foams out, K701 almost approaches the immediacy of high-end Grado's. Taking both foams out was a bit to much and stark, and I wouldn't recommend it unless your setup is quite dark and distant. I've had my TakeTs for not quite a month now. Truth be told, I've barely listened to them. When they arrived from the Land of the Rising Sun, I was in the middle of major house renovations, and I had a houseguest. Hi Guys, I'm antonyfirst. Since before end 2006 my Headfi account didn't even exist, I'll probably change my name to Tony. A friend of mine is deciding wether to balance his L3000 or not. Knowing how much better the Sennhesiser HD600 and HD650 become in balanced mode, I am very curious about what improvements can benefit the L3000. My current stock of headphones, in order of preference, is Darth Beyers V2/K501, K24P, PX100, KSC75, UR/40 The stock DBs were just the end-all for me for a while, but I'd been lying to myself; they were compared to HD280s and KSC75s. I figured I could use some "opposite" headphones so grabbed some used K501s, and was really impressed at everything they did besides bass. The stock DBs were definitely way too bass heavy and the highs just... not there. I tried the gel pads and they made them more tolerable (bass tamer, more highs/mids), but something's still weird about it. The HE90 is one of the best, if not the best, headphone I've heard. I'm currently using a Stax plug adapter to connect it to a HeadAmp KGSS.

From browsing the boards it seems that most of the people here are very serious about their gear and are often using it professionally, but I was hoping to get advice on a more day to day use headphone for a moderate user. I'm basically looking for a headphone under $200 that is comfortable, light (doesn't apply too much pressure and doesn't feel heavy on the neck), and easy to wear for extended periods of time. I'm currently studying a bit regarding statistical algorithms for one of my classes and thought this might a good chance to test things out. I know there is a rank-your-headphones thread on Head-Fi, but that one has a lot of rubbish mixed in with the gems. I'll take a look into that thread after testing out a smaller data set (Head-Case). a headphone that handles brutal, percussive death metal with ease, in addition to not sounding cramped whilst playing symphonies. it sucks that two of my favorite types of music are totally diametrically opposed, from a sonic standpoint. the headphone needs to: - handle pounding double-bass, extremely distorted electric guitar, guttural vocals & thick, accented basslines.. lots of bass impact without getting muddy - not be bright and sibilant on poorly recorded black metal with lots of tape hiss - have a decently sized soundstage to handle large-ensemble symphonies and other types of classical music: such as beethoven, ives, schumann, wagner, gorecki, et cetera..…

Guys, Anyone wants to give this a try? IMO, you can mod a headphone to have a tighter bass and a more natural high but you can't improve the midrange,details, and soundstaging. What do you think? Can the modification be as good as claimed? MarkL has an interesting check on his pair of R10.

hi I spent to years creating this baby but if I were to apply my old rule of "what to keep" in an audio rig then the whole headphone side would have to go. here is the rule: if a certain component gets less than 10 percent of playing time, then It is not worth keeping, no matter how good a deal it was or how much it is worth.
