  4. Now here is something that has been out for a while but I've never really looked into. Now these carry a wide variety of names and there is a plethora of models but they are all pretty much the same, hybrid units with an electret driver to cover the top end and a regular dynamic driver for the rest of the spectrum. I decided it was time to look into this so I bought two units, the Mitchell and Johnson GL2 and some Cyberdrive unit for 30$ which looked the same as the GL2 minus the wood. The GL2 arrived first so some pics: Here the baffle which shows how the drivers are setup Small transformer and 10uf/50V NP cap are all there is to this and th…

  6. Does anyone know (a) the part number for the Beyer pad that fits on the Sony headphone, and ( either the URL, or how to order it from Beyer? I can't seem to find it, now that they've revamped their site. I know it's the pad to the DT-250, but that's all I know.

Hi, I'm in the process of fixing up a HE60 I found in very poor condition. I've replaced the pads and headband, and thankfully the plastic housing is in pretty good shape. The cable seems like its the stock cable, but with a very shoddy stax retermination. The previous owner took very poor care of them and listened to them for years with a Woo Audio amp, and unsurprisingly the drivers are on their last legs (intermittent pops and high pitch whining when plugged into an amp). Thankfully I also have found some new old stock replacement drivers. I also have found a replacement orpheus cable with a 4.7 MOhm bias resistor. Unfortunately, when it comes to soldering an…

  9. I'm looking for a pair of high-quality headphones to mix/monitor on for recording purposes. The HD650's have long been recommended for this purpose (despite being less neutral than the HD600), and as I keep hearing that the LCD-2's share a somewhat similar sound signature - I'm wondering if they would be a good choice in my situation. I am aware that some engineers use the LCD-2's for this purpose, but I've heard comparatively little information about them when used for monitoring. Headphone mixing is not exactly a popular field compared to monitor speakers in the audio world, which might account for this lack of feedback about them, so I thought I'd see if anyone arou…

Hello. I have a pair of Lambda Nova Basic. Both drivers are slanted forward and left one has less bass. Volume is slightly unbalanced but mostly noticeable for stereo music. Should I risk it? Audio signature suddendly changed today and then it sounded normal again (that's when I noticed both drivers slanted forward. Left one was only slightly slanted now both of them fully are)

I am putting together a vintage Realistic bookshelf stereo system with a SA-150 integrated amp, Minimus 7 speakers, and a Lab-290 turntable. It dawned on me that my headphones are the only component that doesn't fit into the early 80's Radio Shack theme. I need some suggestions for headphones that Radio Shack sold in that same time period. I would guess that there were some decent headphones made for Radio Shack in the early 80's. I thought that this would be the best place to get expert advise so what would you recommend? Thanks a lot, Gene

Sony released these back in April: The MDR-RF4000K: Also, the MRD-RF810RK (which looks to already be superceded by something). What caught my attention was one particular spec: 2.4GHz. That's the digital transmission. So I'd be curious if anyone heard this, or if we have a serious contender for a wireless headphone yet.

Having too many phones can push one or more aside. When gear or mood or lifestyle changes allows it to reenter, it can be great to rediscover. What have you rediscovered lately? Wanted to give the CD3000s a listen before selling. Been a year and rarely a listen a year before that. Currently listening to Anouar Brahem with a Pico DAC + Slim. Damn, they're pretty nice.

Cycle World magazine has a review of JH Audio JH-5Ms in its latest issue (June 2011, pg 100). CW loved the sound quality at low to mid- speeds, but felt that wind noise overpowered the iems at high speeds. They also said that the JH-5M didn't block sound as well as ear plugs. I thought it quite fair from the viewpoint of being used while motorcycling. Then I noticed that they referenced www.hearingdynamics.net as the source of the JH-5Ms. It seems that Jerry and Beth Orliss have built a partnership to produce and sell a custom JHA iem for motorcycling and other sporting applications. I don't see many people spending $500 for this application, especially after th…

hi all, i am a new owner of a lambda SR. i found it cheap on craigslist, was not expecting to see one, went and snatched it up for cheap. it looks fairly dirty on the inside and i have been looking at some guides where people describe cleaning lambdas but the process is a bit intimidating... it looks like there is a lot of dirt inside. i wasn't aware dirt was so hard to clean off of them before i bought them, and there are 2 visible specks of dirt on the left driver on the inside. that driver usually buzzes a bit, sometimes not too bad but sometimes a bit louder. when you look down into the driver housings you can see lots of dirt that looks nasty and gross. i am using a …

So I got teased a bit in another thread when I mentioned I ordered some HD600 grills for my HD580, because I thought that would essentially make them HD600s. Is this not the case? Do the 580's and the 600's indeed have the same drivers? If so, what is it that makes the 600's different aside from the grills, are the enclosures different?

  20. After hearing a lot of buzz, especially on head-fi.org, I've got these from a spam site and they're finally here. I did a lot of testing, including a comparison with the m50, as the title suggests. There's the box. Big and pretty, but dinged up by the nosy and careless customs employees. The headphones come packed with a layer of cloth, which I found a nice touch. The build quality is great. You definitely don't expect something like this for 50 dollars. Sturdy, heavy plastic, no creaking. Pretty comfortable, if a tiny bit too small for my head. Then again, I'm not a good judge for this as I find all headphones a bit uncomfortable. If I can put it on and not feel …

  21. I just got these in today after I got a good deal on eBay. I'm really surprised by how good these sound. It was hard to find information on these, but it seems they were released a few years ago (in 2003/2004). This is the japanese info page: http://www.audio-technica.co.jp/products/hp/pc/atc-ha4usb.html I was just wondering if anyone else had come across these in their audio journey? If I can make the NE mini-meet, I'd be happy to bring em along.

Over at HF there is a mod for the Denon D2000/D5000 that is supposed to make them... (HF Topic) I'm not quite sure what to to make of this; he sounds pretty rational describing the mod. On the other hand he talks of vast differences after changing the phones' cables (and burning them in), which i tend to doubt. Has someone of you heard this 'spectacular' mod yet?

Hi all, First post here! Looking for a little advice. I'm in the market for two sets of headphones, one for while I'm on my motorcycle, and one for while I'm at the gym. I don't have a crazy budget, and I guess I'd like to keep each pair under the 80 dollar-ish range. That cash limit isn't SUPER strict, so I'll move around a little. I understand because of my other desires I'll be sacrificing some sound quality/build quality. I'll be connecting to a latest model iPhone, so bluetooth wireless needed for both sets. Audio controls on the set are a must (Not necessarily a mic though, if its a really good set.) Another major consideration: My ears are w…
