Headphone Amplification

  1. Hey everyone, Ok, so I have an SR-71 which I am happy with for the most part, but currently both my DAP's are good only from the headphone out (Rio Karma/iAudio X5); this leads to a problem I'm experiencing with piano passages and clipping. It happens too often for my liking and unfortunately, Ray Samuels hasn't been able to help other than to suggest that I drop the volume out down to 25% of full volume (at that output I have a hard time driving Grados with the amp) or to get a better source So instead, I've decided that maybe I need to get a new amp. Can someone suggest something helpful to me? Is Ray right(only solution is a better DAP)? Is there a better soun…

OK folks, I just bought a dozen spares, but this guy has plenty: http://cgi.ebay.com/88x-Tube-6FQ7-6CG7-RAYTHEON-JAPAN-NIB-5-8-Each-Tube_W0QQitemZ5873841025QQcategoryZ50598QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem I believe the actual manufacturer of these tubes is Toshiba. In my 007t, these outperform anything else I've tried. At a whopping $5.80 per tube, knock yourselves out. There are actually cheaper ones on eBay, but this guy has enough to make quads, and is a reputable seller (I've bought from him several times in the past, but have no other affiliation with him or this auction). If you know how to bias the amp, you should try these. If you don't, bias instruct…

As the subject states, my GS-X has arrived. I received the amp yesterday and quickly set it up in my system once I got home from work. As some of you are already aware, the amp looks really, really nice, both inside and out. It is bit smaller than I had expected, especially after getting used to the size of a Gilmore Reference that I used to own. I'll post some pics soon when I get around to taking out my camera. No listening impressions yet since I'm having issues with my ears/hearing right now due to horrible allergy and sinus condition that I've been suffering.

  6. This probably dives me more insane than anything else about this hobby/obsession. So I finally make the switch and have all my music into a 5g iPod 60gb, I get the awesome Turbodock II for the line out and am using my fully burned in Hornet. The Hornet sounds awesome... nice texture, black background, good weight/depth, etc. So why did I put it on eBay... I miss the crossfeed and bassboost from my SM for some of my music. Damn I hate this! I wish I could keep both but without the parametric EQ some of the music I listen to sounds slightly too dry with this amp, which is frustrating because I'll switch to a different album and it's bliss! So off I go to sell and on…

  7. Hi guys, I wasn't quite sure where to put this thread since the DA10 is a source, but it has a headphone-out. Since I'm referring to the headphone-out, I guess it goes in the amps section. So. Has anyone tried the DA10's headphone out with a high-end A-T? Actually, I'm basically looking for a $1000 source + amp setup for high end A-T's so that if a 45th anniversary headphone comes out, I'll be ready. (And if not, I'll just get a W5k.) I can't afford the matching amps (HA-5000 for example) or else I would only need to look for a source. The DA10 is just one of the many options I'm thinking about. Well, I don't want a setup along the lines of Zhaolu -> Dynahi.

Just wondering, what are some good tubes for an MPX3 for metal? It sounds really good and realistic on most things so far, but the liquidic presentation doesn't lend itself to metal so well. Or should I just get a grado? Also, any recommendations for the W10LTD? I know not that many people have heard it, but it's one of the AT's that leans a bit more to the w100/2002 side, but not too much. My sonic preferences would probably be at least a realistic amount of bass, and "searing soaring highs"/

  13. it's incredible the virtues of this amp are putting my head to rest , and ears to pacifically drool over it. this amp is easily the best amp I've come across , it's absolutely linear smooth outraugeoulsy extended at both ends , it gives the most effortless presentation , while keeping the bass solidly firm and never an inch out of the picture . It's solid state , but other then this it's difficult to tell it has transistor related character , which is a very good thing . It does a very nice job with ps-1 finally . Bass and bass to mids frq.s region are both very smooth and very well rendered ; there's a great sense of deepness , coherence and authoritative con…

I'm interested in a very small foot print of an amp. I like a warm colouration when I'm working. I will likely be using the RS-1's and the RA-1 will be far too lively. I would love something with tubes, but the EMP AE is too rich for my blood and well, out of production. THe RKV is very interesting but quite a bit larger. I will be using an iPod.

  24. Started by acs236,

Each time I hear sacd lover's MPX, or Edipus's PPX Slam, I reall like them. But I pretty committed to not getting a tube amp because I pretty much don't want the tweakability a tube amp provides -- switching tubes, spending lots of money on NOS tubes, not being able to find tubes that sound exactly like what you had before, etc. I just know it would drive me a bit nuts. So.... Does Singlepower have plans or has it ever considered making a solid state amp?

Possible production of new units. I am working on Craig to do a special "limited" run of the full size Zana Duex like I have. This would be for 10 to maybe 15 "hard in the books" commitment of people. He would point to point wire each and do one at a time with the possibility of some very limited assembly line type of thing going on. This amp has to be done by him personally to be correct. A one man operation. If you are last on the list it could be some time. Price is a guess at this point anywhere from $1500 to $1800. He thought he could do them cheaper but probably can't. Disclaimer: I am not an employee or partner of any kind to Eddie Current. I make nothing on this.…
