This originally came to me in a memo at work. But it's a public blog, so it seems worth passing on. I don't have a good sense of where this fellow's views fall. Centrist, lunatic fringe, I have no idea. But I think I'll keep an eye on what he has to say just on principle. http://lefsetz.com/wordpress/index.php/archives/2009/08/02/the-concert-business/ Here are the first couple grafs:

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation - 1988 Blast First Enigma release: Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation GDC/Deluxe Edition:x` I posted these before, but they (painfully) illustrate the my point. This is a thread idea I've had for ages. In the age of the brick wall, so many remastered releases sonically inferior to previous releases. Such sins are particularly egregious in the world of classic rock, but the phenomenon plagues nearly every genre. The remaster of Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works: 85-92 managed to wreck what was already a very lo-fi endeavor to start. Right now I'm trying to figure out what is the best Led Zeppelin set. I bought the original 4…

Have been shit testing this all day and must say I'm very pleasantly surprised. Throwing all sorts of obscure stuff at the wall to see what sticks, and generally the depth of what comes back is impressive. Happily listening to "Durutti Column Radio" for the last hour or so now without a single skip. Win. (Must be leveraging off the effort already put into Genius over the last few years?)

Wow I just downloaded a live bootleg of them and I'm amazed. It's piano, bass, and drums, and half the time I can't tell what instruments are playing! It's sort of in the vein of later Miles fusion stuff, but they seem to be inspired by everything (the Beatles cover is crazy). This is the one I dled, give it a shot, it's awesome: http://www.archive.org/details/jfjo2005-08-25flac16

While I was looking to buy some CDs, I had come across a post somewhere claiming that Japanese versions are mastered in a way that makes them better than other regions. Simply put, is this true?

Just curious which version do you prefer. I've put in the download two versions of the title track 'Aqualung' by Jethro Tull, both files in lossless format. Please vote for which one you think sounds better after you've heard them. I'll reveal which version is which after enough people have listened Here is the download: Send big files the easy way. Files too large for email attachments? No problem!

I don't know how many of you saw this, but Ms. Newsom is releasing her follow up to the wonderful Ys next month with a 3-CD/3-LP release of Have One On Me. Yes, a triple album. No idea what to expect, but I'm looking forward to this immensely. Pre-Order here. With tour dates to follow: I'd be lying if I said I wasn't going to keep an eye on that March 17th date in Cambridge, MA.

On the current 45rpm reissue of Coltrane Crescent (ORG Release), the second disc doesn't sit well with my VPI Periphery ring and I'm kinda lost on this. Basically the ring doesn't clamp the disc circumference properly. It flattens down one side, but the disc is short on the opposite end. So the disc ring just sits a little loft sided. Knowing the high quality of the ORG releases, I thought this is just a one disc fault or something. So I sent it back to elusive disc who send me a new replacement copy. SAME PROBLEM! Now I'm a little concerned. All the ORG releases in my collection are pretty much pristine...so I'm a bit bummed. Add to that about a 40 second t…

Just received my, bought used, and wonder which year of release are yours please. My is from year 1988 made in Germany with old fashion big double CD case. Looks like the first run, but I am not sure, cos most of what I see on Ebay now are year 2000. I was simply wondering if there any quality differences between 1988 and say 2000. To know this you have to hear them side by side, so, maybe someone had the chance to do so, please share then...Not that my are bad, but its just 20 years old, quite exceptional, for me anyway. THX

Ya rly. I am both unsurprised and waiting for him to say "Nah, just playing." Of course, many IDM fans (a group of conspiracy theorists if there ever was one, ask them about Boards of Canada some time) have long suspected this to be true. The only artist (besides Massive Attack) that Burial has collaborated with is Four Tet.

http://www.golfrecords.co.uk/letthemeatvinyl.com/index.htm http://www.killingjoke.com/killingjoke_home.html http://www.plastichead.com/catalogue.asp?ex=backlist&target=KILLING%20JOKE I confess I am no vinyl-head, but I am a Killing Joke fan. Much of their back catalog suffers from the typical 80's CD mastering issues - bright, brittle, and anemic. I believe there are CD remasters on the way as well, but if anyone happens to a: be a KJ fan, b: have a vinyl rig they are proud of, and c: is in to making digitizations of their vinyl - I'd love to hear a couple tracks for comparison purposes. Well, I'd love to hear them all but that is a lot to ask...
