Imagine fingerstyle guitar as influenced by Ali Akbar Khan/Ravi Shankar and Charles Ives/Bela Barotk as Bill Monroe and Mississippi John Hurt. Anyone else a fan? I'm particularly fond of John Fahey, Robbie Basho and James Blackshaw. I highly recommend Days Have Gone By, America, The Yellow Princess and Fare Forward Voyagers for Fahey, O True Believers by James Blackshaw, and most of Basho's early work, + Zarthus for something less guitar based. It's really beautiful stuff. An album from Blackshaw and a collaborator (forget his name, awesome lutenist) just came out recently, under the name Brethren of the Free Spirit. Each CD comes in a mini-LP sleeve, and the CDs themselves are recreated to look like little vinyls. I have no familiarity with Gould's work, but I have a hard time passing up a deal like this. Any thoughts?

While I was looking to buy some CDs, I had come across a post somewhere claiming that Japanese versions are mastered in a way that makes them better than other regions. Simply put, is this true?

So, this is a really stupid question, but I was wondering if DVD-A discs have PCM 24/96 tracks on them? If I have a transport that can play the PCM information off of DVD-V discs, is there any reason it won't work with DVD-A discs? Thanks!

In April I'm going to New Orleans to see Ministry at the House of Blues. I'm pretty pumped since I've loved Ministry since 6th grade and have never seen them live. Touring with Al & Co. are two bands called Meshuggah and Hemlock. I did a little research and Meshuggah last night on amazon, and they sound like a pretty badass math-metal band. Hemlock I know nothing of. I'd like some albums recommendations for Meshuggah and Hemlock if any of you have any (Dusty?). Thanks!

German Oak - German Oak Amazing, phantasmal krautrock. An improptu recording in an abandoned war bunker. A bit sloppy, but grow some nuts and put up with it. If you like Can, Faust, International Harvester, Popol Vuh and all those greats, most definitely check it out. Makes you feel as if you're on the brink of death; life-affirming. moderator edit: I fixed the link for the album art, and the download should work now

Me and a couple of friends spent today attempting to record some trip-hop. It didn't really end up sounding anything like trip-hop, and we're probably going to rerecord most of the parts because they're a little sloppy, but I think it actually turned out pretty well. I'm curious as to what you guys think. http://www.mediafire.com/?dudsxc1151v I just did the intro part, but I'll probably do some bass on it eventually.

I am a big fan of the ECM and MA Records labels. I have found most of the recordings from these labels have great music detail and mixing, especially anything Todd mixes over at MA Records is exceptional in sonic quality. My dilemma is that both labels are very deep in talent and have many CDs available and I am reluctant to just randomly pick CDs without knowing what I am getting. Both labels have an eclectic roster of talent but some of it is just a little bit out there for me at this point and I would rather not buy a CD just to have to wait a while for it to grow on me. Any recommendations? What artists have you purchased and liked?

  17. http://niggytardust.com/ I haven't seen a thread about this album (here) - I managed to get a free copy before they took them down (after 100,000 downloads) and actually went back to pay $5 for the flac (eat that, radiohead). Disclosure: I was a big nine inch nails fan in the 90's. I'd heard William's "list of demands" prior to NiggyTardust!, and liked it too, though I am not generally a hip hop fan (beastie boys aside). I really like this album. It is probably one of the most interesting albums I've heard since American Edit. It is just, wow. Tremendous respect for Trent's productions skills. Some of the tracks sound very nin-like, others not at all, and it st…

Since we here have the coolest feature i seen on any forums being the ability to embed video in the threads directly I figure we need a Music Video thread. this thread is for any video that was done in the 80's. the 80's were the high light of music videos and 80's music is pretty wild and stretched... The first Video is From Morris Day and his "Jungle Love" video he may be best known for. Little do people know Day went to high school with Prince...who cares the song Rocks! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irimNjHPS9c

I decided to expand on my mid-year report card for my end-of-year ranking. Any one of the albums receiving an A could be considered my Album of the Year, but if forced to choose one it would have to be Rasputina's Oh Perilous World. The rest of my ramblings are as follows... A | Catherine Anne Davies - The Piano EP Another haunting collection of songs from Ms. Davies. Nothing groundbreaking here, but the simple and straight-forward songs and her voice create a haunting atmosphere that's difficult to describe but not easily forgotten. Samples available here. A | Epica - The Divine Conspiracy Since picking this up, I've explored their back catalog and came away unim…

I thought it would be interesting to see people post their absolute favorite albums of all time. Your desert island albums, albums with huge personal significance to you, whatever. Those albums that you know note for note and can always listen to and be blown away by. I thought by doing this we could all expand our own musical horizons, or something. This is in no order (well I guess it has to be in an order, but it's of no significance): John Coltrane - A Love Supreme IMO this is the greatest single musical statement ever. People usually recommend My Favorite Things as a first Coltrane album, but I got this instead. If I remember right it was the second pure…

  25. Killing Joke - They get better and better with time, like a fine wine or cheese. The White Stripes - Hyped as all hell yes, but simple composition is an art, imho. I disliked them at first too. Primus - what's not to love?
