I'm not talking about bands or singers no one here would listen to, but about the bands people whose opinion you respect seem to like a lot, but you just don't get. I'm sure I've got more than this, but here's a start. Opeth: very silly stuff Dream Theater: C'mon people, this is as corny as it gets Flaming Lips: interesting for a minute, then yawn Portishead: okay, not bad but still unlistenable Bright Eyes: a couple great songs, but pretentious drips Ryan Adams: okay, a good song or five, fav is an Oasis cover, but blech

Since my trainer has decided to stick me on a stairmaster and/or elliptical thingy for one hour six days a week, I need tunes to get me through the tedium and misery. I absolutely HATE the let's-get-moving music gyms play (fortunately, I'm in her home and have no competing ugly music blasting). I hate club/dance music for the most part and music with programed drums. I just want to forget I'm on this damn thing and make the time disappear. I've had my ipod on shuffle, and have found that some songs, usually long ones, and ones I've known for years but still love seem to work best. I start listening, get happy, and time blows by. Much of their back catalog suffers from the typical 80's CD mastering issues - bright, brittle, and anemic. I believe there are CD remasters on the way as well, but if anyone happens to a: be a KJ fan, b: have a vinyl rig they are proud of, and c: is in to making digitizations of their vinyl - I'd love to hear a couple tracks for comparison purposes. Well, I'd love to hear them all but that is a lot to ask...

You know how it goes -- the album would be perfect if it weren't for this one track, or these two tracks, or whatnot. (This is actually just an excuse to get rid of some of my favourite albums from my insanely long list.) Deep Purple, Who Do We Think We Are? -- fine up until "Place In Line", which totally drags things down, and doesn't get much better with "Our Lady". King Crimson, Red -- would've been fine if they had just put something more "Fractured"-like instead of the unorthodox improvisation of "Providence". Talking Heads, Remain in Light -- this one pains me, because I really don't understand my dislike of "Once in a Lifetime", but I just don't -- I can liste…

Well, the year is almost over, so what else are you looking forward to for 2007? My list : And the Radiohead album in physical form.

Any recommendations? Music and best CD versions? I don't know much about this chap's music. Many thanks.

The Tape Project, wherein they make dubs off the original master tapes with custom built gear and you get albums on 15ips 1/4" half track stereo tape. Reel to reel tape, as close to the master tape as you'll ever get without owning the actual master tape. The catalog is pretty limited, unfortunately.

I'm not really familiar with Aphex Twin, but I found this awesome mashup: http://www.100dbs.com/mixes/aphex/ I'm not a huge fan of mashups, but some of these cuts are awesome. The last one with Kool Keith is amazing, and Breathe And Stop (Q-Tip) is much better than the original imo. The other one I really like is Time's Up For Freeman, Hardy And Willis with O.C. The rest are ok or kind of bad, but definitely listen to those 3 if you like hip-hop or Aphex Twin, or music in general.

Specifically SADE remasters.... any goodcompared to the original CDs

I have never listened to Stravinsky but want to. Some of my favorite composers are 20th century composers and Stravinsky is almost always spoken of with high regard. The problem is that I don't know where to start. What pieces do you like a lot or what do you think I should start with?

Holy shit what a great show! That guy knows how to spank that plank! And the whole band was tight, they were really on last night! It was kind of a weird venue, a high school auditorium. There was a sign on the wall saying that max occupancy was 1250. The acoustics were superb!

I've read that teaching is very important to her and that she didn't want to tour to finish school, but this is crazy coming weeks after the release of Illumination. The album has the band poised for some success considering it's their most accessible album IMO. I'll be curious to see what becomes of the band without her and Morten, and if she'll go on to do something on her own or with others. I figured it was worth mentioning here with how many spins Illumination has gotten recently. [edit] News from here [/edit]

Interesting news on several levels. Here's a link to the story. I really like Gavin's drumming, and it would be really interesting to hear him with King Crimson, but I really hope he doesn't leave Porcupine Tree permanently!

Just got back from seeing Leila Josefowicz solo with the Atlanta Symphony. Second time I've seen her. She is really woth the ticket if you get a chance. The performed Beethovens violin concerto in D major. God sher can make that violin sing and cry. She was using a Del Gesu violin that was made in 1724.( I am guessing KA_CHING in $$ major) As a bonus she is very easy on the eyes too.

Jean-Michel Jarre has re-recorded Oxygene from the ground up for the 30th anniversary of the album. Theres also a DVD with a one-take live performance of the album. Theres a stereo and a 5.1 version of the album and a 2D and 3D version of the video. http://www.emigroup.com/Press/2007/press87.htm Its out at the end of the month. When you burn a cd from a cd is there a loss of fidelity? A friend of mine who is a questionable source said that there is but couldn't back up his claim with anything but "I read it somewhere". I'm thinking about backing up my library on CDR this week and wondering if loss of fidelity is a problem and if there is a way to prevent it. I currently can't hear any difference but my ears are constantly learning (or arguably hallucinating) new things all the time. I don't want to do it if a few years from now I can hear the difference between the two. Thanks, Aaron

Worthy of picking up. Much improved instrument presentation and "crispiness" of the sound. Good re-master. Haven't listen to the bonus material, including the second CD of live at the Elyse'e. Will report back once I listen to everything.

I've read that the early CD RCA issues are supposed to be the best, but I believe I've only heard that version of Low. The recent EMI 24 Bit versions sound terrible. And the Ryko discs are really wonky, some tracks sound ok, others sound terrible, and others have strange frequency anomalies. Anyone else care to weigh in?
