Anyone have any predictions? Or how about actual knowledge? SACD has firmly entrenched itself as a niche market...and getting "nicher". Are either HD-DVD or BluRay going to carry high-res audio, either high-rate PCM or DSD? (Can you tell I just read in this month's Stereophile the "As We See It"?) I WANT MY HIGH-RES!!!1!

I hope most of us have seen the doc of Sound City if not, shame on you! Well, I guess I'm a little biased when it comes to the golden age of recording studios and the like. The good news is that they've cleaned and preened the old place and it's now open for business once again! Complete with a full compliment of Ampex and 3M tape machines and a legendary Helios console. Check it out! https://www.soundcitystudios.com/

I just started to mess around with the online radio stations with the SB3. Just curious what your favorite online radio stations are? I'm mostly interested in jazz, classical, blues and experimental rock but any and all suggestions are welcome.

Looking to Get AJA. Should I get the remaster or the original CD (c. 1990)? The MoFi one is just too expensive on the open market.

To ensure people are in the know here as well this is the latest and greatest from CanJam 09 speakers. We hope to have a few more but this was the one that I know we needed to have based on the work he and Joe have done with the Blue Note series. Now I just have to make sure I can get a seat. Well hats off to Voltron for setting this up for CanJam 2009. Steve Hoffman and Joe Harley (Music Matters) have graciously agreed to speak at Can Jam Saturday 5/30/2009. The talk is going to center around their recent ground breaking work with the Music Matters Blue Note reissue series. For those that have not seen Steve talk, the hour or so is filled with amazing music and anecd…

I just noticed over on the Hoffman site that the current run of Blue Note reissues on 45 RPM vinyl will be coming out on SACD shortly. That is some very cool news even though I will have to figure out whether I want to cancel the vinyl subscription, double up some, or wait and see how they compare before making a choice. I will not cancel my other subscription to the Music Matters BN reissues because those are the most gorgeous LPs ever produced. Anyway, these remasters are so awesome that anybody who likes jazz even a little should be buying these things. Apparently $30 a pop, so that is $20 cheaper than the vinyl option.

Just a heads up,.. There's a 15% discount code (on that other site) for the Rolling Stones hi rez downloads that HD Tracks are selling. I guess I could just paste it here but somehow that doesn't seem right? Whatever,.. all you have to do is visit that site and copy and paste it to the "discount code" box when you're checking out. If you're like me, I'm just grabbing the "Through the Past..." and waiting for "Let it Bleed" and hopefully "Sticky Fingers" latter on. I haven't got anything but the original vinyl of this stuff so don't ask me to do comparisons! If I can't hear a difference without A/Bing it,.. it isn't significant in my book.

I guess like most of us, I go through periods of enjoying what I have, periods of really investigating one or two artists or genres, periods of not even listening much at all, and periods where I'm in exploratory mode. I'm moving into that last mode now, and am looking for things I probably wouldn't find on my own. I thought it might be fun (at least for me) if my friends would recommend one or two choices that you think I should have. I'm pretty open to most anything, want to broaden my tastes, definitely could use some classical suggestions, but have an extremely low tolerance for bouncy-happy-pop or what I like to call wimp rock (e.g., coldplay and all those horribl…

A new double LP with amazing organ drone from drone masters sunn. I've heard the entire album via a stream and it is absolutely amazing- IMO their best work since Black One; better than all the side projects and one offs they've released, this one is black as hell! The album isn't pure organ drone, but has some vocals, guitar and bass. "Last year sunn 0))) was invivted to perform at a ancient cathedral in Bergen Norway . The performance was captured via 24 track mobile recording and the resuluts were pressed onto double 180 gram vinyl. This recording will be available exclusively on vinyl only. There will not be a digital release (cd or downloads). Pure analog! Th…

Anyone know what Super High Material is? Does it mean compressed to audio death, or is it actually a good thing? Houses of the Holy Oh, and you can keep your "early Pink Floyd" and "Flaming Lips" and the like jokes to yourselves. Bwa-ha, very funny, so funny I forgot to laugh. Yeah, why don't you marry yourself. Ew, that's disgusting.

Picking up the new Propagandhi album, "Supporting Caste" this afternoon. I've been waiting for this sucker since a track leaked a couple of months ago. I'm still surprised it's already here; their trend has been 5+ years between albums since founding the G7 Welcoming Committee. Anyone else excited about the Winterpeg Punks' return? I'm going to be going crazy this afternoon, looking instead of listening. I had to pick a large image here, for detail. Some great album art once again:

It's that time of the year again. One of these days I plan to attend but I'm happy enough to get my yearly wake up call of what's happening in the music world outside of my own melon. Here's a link to NPR's Austin 100. I usually use it to jot down artists I want to try and find streams of and hopefully shamelessly copy! https://www.npr.org/2018/03/01/585356494/the-austin-100-a-2018-sxsw-mixtape

I'm not sure how long South X Southwest has been doing this live stream, but they seem to have it down. And I'm sure sponsorship has a lot to do with which stages/bands get onto the stream but there's not much that I enjoy as much as listening to bands who I've never heard before. At this level, I think they all have something to say. Check it out. If you hate who's playing right now, check back in an hour or so (between bands they run tape from their archives). http://sxsw.com/live

I didn't know where to put this, but they're re-releasing the Blu-ray disc: https://www.thesdeshop.com/products/tears-for-fears-the-hurting-limited-edition-sde-exclusive-blu-ray-audio The surround disc was originally released in 2023 (I haven't heard it) - every so often, I like to dive down that audiophile remastering rabbit hole 🐇🕳️ (one commenter mentions listening on a sound bar on page 6): https://www.thesdeshop.com/products/tears-for-fears-the-hurting-limited-edition-sde-exclusive-blu-ray-audio Comparison: https://magicvinyldigital.net/2024/02/11/tears-for-tears-the-hurting-review-test-vinyl-records-1983-2019-abbey-road-studios-2023-cd-1983-1999-amazon-mus…

In April I'm going to New Orleans to see Ministry at the House of Blues. I'm pretty pumped since I've loved Ministry since 6th grade and have never seen them live. Touring with Al & Co. are two bands called Meshuggah and Hemlock. I did a little research and Meshuggah last night on amazon, and they sound like a pretty badass math-metal band. Hemlock I know nothing of. I'd like some albums recommendations for Meshuggah and Hemlock if any of you have any (Dusty?). Thanks!

I have A Go Go and the Medeski Martin & Wood collaboration under the name Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, Out Louder, and enjoy them both immensely from a musical standpoint (I love fusion). What else should I get next?

Please. (Mebbe I forgot that last time.) I like some jazz, but I have to admit to not "getting" the less melodic stuff. The stuff I enjoy the most is the stuff that is the most melodic. That said, I'm willing to experiment, so don't take that as a hard-and-fast rule for recommendations -- just qualify. Please. I'm thinking I really need to see "Straight No Chaser" (the movie executive produced by Clint Eastwood). I picked up Brilliant Corners and ...with John Coltrane on SACD, what else should I get? Does he have any "Deluxe Editions", or should I stick with the RVG's?
