For those of us who watch the WAYLT thread, here is a place to post the albums you notice that are, in general, Head Case Approved Musicks (or d-_-b Musicks). For example, Phil Collins But Seriously... would not go here, even if I like it, because no one else ever listens to it. But this album does belong: ...because a lot of us listen to it, and it shows up in a lot of our last.fm signatures.

In the spirit of the Regina Spektor thread, I though I would give a heads up. Immy has a new album to be released (according to Amazon) on August 3. Amazon.com: Ellipse: Imogen Heap: Music Of course, I have it preordered

While seeing the new Bond film this weekend, I was seriously impressed with Jack White's guitar tone on the song during the opening credits. Does he have other songs that have seriously delicious guitar tones? I like everything from ridiculously processed (Isley Brothers -- Who's That Lady; Shotgun Messiah's Violent New Breed; Nine Inch Nails; Landmind-era Ministry; etc.) to some nice subtle compression with maybe a little bit of tube distortion (Tommy Bolin's Savannah Woman; Al di Meola's Ritmo de la Noche; Eric Johnson) to some nice dirty spittle-flying guitar tones (ELO's Ma Ma Ma Belle; godhead's Fall Away) to ...uh, I don't know what to call it -- let's just call i…

This was announced some time in June. They put up samples of the upcoming album on their Myspace page today: Porcupine Tree on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads The stream quality is not very good, but I enjoyed what I heard A review from a listening session can be found here. Also it sounds like a 5.1 DVD-A is confirmed, which more than likely means a high res stereo PCM track on the same disc.

I think there are enough of us with turntables to warrant a specific vinyl thread. After all it's not the same as streaming digital. Shirley Bassey: Good, Bad but Beautiful

In the tradition of the following threads... '07 Mid-Year Report Card '07 Year-End Report Card '08 Mid-Year Report Card ... it seemed time, or even past time, to revisit this tradition. Each year I find an album or two worth checking out thanks to the impressions in these threads by those here at the -Case. Unfortunately my preliminary list has 30 titles released in '08, and countless others that are a year or two old but are new to me. So I'm going to need to make some time to sit down and go through them, slap a grade on each and follow up with the appropriate comments. Despite tales of the downfall of good music, I found this year to be better than decent (even…

Is there an easy-to-use, reputable service/store to sell CDs to over the internets? I am looking for something that makes the process very simple, which is why I am not currently contemplating the forums. I welcome your suggestions.

  12. As I was casually listening to some music tonight, my choice of CD brought a rush of memory back to me that inspired me to ask this question. What is the most memorable, striking moment you've had while at a concert, seeing a live performance? For me it was at an outdoor theater that no longer exists - Poplar Creek in the NW Chicago burbs. We had gone to see King Crimson there on the tour they did supporting the Beat album. But there were mega intense thunderstorms that day and the show was rained out. I had been a Crimso fan since the early '70's but had never seen them. I was heartbroken. Flash ahead a couple of years. Three of a Perfect Pair is out. Crimso is tou…

How does the SQ and overall quality of the DCC Gold series compare to Mobile Fidelity? Does Steve Hoffman oversee the DCC line? I just found a new copy of Jackson Browne's "Late for the Sky" for $100 when the used were going for as much as $200. I don't think I've paid more than $25 for one cd in my life but to inaugurate my new Capitole this might be the CD I would pay such a price if...that sound is really that significant a difference? What's the general comparison between the two premium companies? Between a standard rebook and these gold standards? And as anyone heard or do you have "Late for the Sky?"

Let me just list some bands that I like and ask what other bands are in a similar vein. 1) Godspeed You! Black Emperor 2) Mogwai 3) Stereolab 4) Sigur Ros What are some bands that make music in a similar vein?

  15. I recently picked up couple albums from Johnny Cash's American Recording series (specifically, III and IV). I was excited about it as I've been meaning to get them for a while. To my dissapointment, both albums sounded terrible, sounding really "hot" at many places with distortions. My questions is, are there good versions of the American Recording series? I really want to listen to them, but I just can't get over the distortions.

Vic Chesnutt in a coma - Americana and roots music - No Depression word is that it doesn't look good. a real fucking shame if he doesn't pull through. I saw him play with Widespread Panic NYE in Atlanta, 2001. I had no idea who he was and it was amazing. I have been a fan ever since.

I know from posts in the Listening thread there are members that still subscribe to B&W's Society of Sound, but it's been many years since it's been discussed and a few since an album has been released I cared much about (to be fair that's coupled with the raise of streaming services). Anyway, my subscription is about to expire and curious if others are still excited about their 24-bit releases?

  18. http://niggytardust.com/ I haven't seen a thread about this album (here) - I managed to get a free copy before they took them down (after 100,000 downloads) and actually went back to pay $5 for the flac (eat that, radiohead). Disclosure: I was a big nine inch nails fan in the 90's. I'd heard William's "list of demands" prior to NiggyTardust!, and liked it too, though I am not generally a hip hop fan (beastie boys aside). I really like this album. It is probably one of the most interesting albums I've heard since American Edit. It is just, wow. Tremendous respect for Trent's productions skills. Some of the tracks sound very nin-like, others not at all, and it st…

Now, Renato is going to think I am drunk... and he is somewhat correct, but I just had an epiphany of sorts and decided to start this thread. If there is already a similar thread on the go, I'm sorry, but I'm not searching for shit at this point. Just doing a little spring cleaning and spinning some vinyl and I was struck by the perfect beauty of Stevie Wonder's 'Ordinary Pain'. Any other songs that you think are perfect?
