Hey guys, anyone here tried/own a pair Von Schweikert VR-1 bookshelf speakers? My cousin's friend is selling a brand new pair for $1000. Apparently the guy liked it soo much he bought two pairs back in the day with one serving as backup. The set he is selling is the backup set which is new and unused. I have no experience when it comes to speakers so I

I created a similar thread at Headfi a while ago and I'll paste the links I was offered over there. I'm now much more serious and once again interested in any good reading for room setup and treatments. I'm especially interested in room design and getting the most performance if one is able to start from complete scratch. The links offered up for those interested: Jon Risch's Web Site- Acoustic Treatments Real Traps Ethan's Magazine Articles Auralex Audioholics Tweaks

Tyrion posting his Compact Hemps for sale got me interested yesterday, so I did a bit of internet searchage. I like the looks of the Omega company, and their speakers look very nice, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm a newb when it comes to high efficiency speakers and SET amps (its high efficiency right, not low efficiency?), but I admit the simplicity of it all appeals to me (single ended triode -> single driver). So what do Omegas sound like? Do they like bigger rooms or smaller rooms?

I'm trying to decide what would be the best use of my money. I recently purchased a pair of Audioengine A5's, and I like them quite a bit. However, I recently became aware of the NHT M-00's, and I could probably afford a pair of those if I stretched my budget. The way I see it, I have two options. I could keep the A5's, add an Onix X-Sub, and call it a day. That would probably make for a pretty sweet 2.1 system. Alternatively, I could return the A5's and buy the M-00's, which I would imagine perform at a somewhat higher level than the A5's. I couldn't use my X-Sub in that setup, but that's not a deal breaker for me. It would probably be a long time before I could …

This is my first post here. I am very happy with this system (for headphones - DT-880's,) however the speakers are starting to annoy me, while they are very detailed and lively they seem a bit forward and get tiring to my ears after a while in my setup. I really think I should have kept my last pair of speakers, Vandersteen 1C's. Now I'm seriously considering saving up for them again. This is a pic of my rig. The speakers are Omega Minuets that have modified by rewiring with thick solid-wire copper wiring inside, and the speaker wire is directly wired to the speakers. The source is 1212M running into the Luxman tube amp via silver interconnects.

So there's a local guy selling his Dynaco ST-70 for a pretty fair price ($300) and a pair of Magnepan MMG's ($300) also. I was curious if you guys have any input on the Dynaco amps.

I've been looking around for the best speaker amp under $200. The options I've considered (Teac A1D, Cambridge Audio A5, Panasonic A-35R and Denon PMA-255) are: - Out of stock and nowhere to be found anymore for the Teac - Out of stock and UK available only for the Cambridge Audio, and Denon - Nowhere to be found anymore in the U.S. other than from pick-up in Montana for the Panasonic I keep hearing things about NAD. Are there NAD products that are available in my pricerange? The only one that is available online in the United States I believe is the Behringer A-500: http://www.audiolines.com/product.php?productid=12906&cat=0&page=1 Anyone got any ide…

As I've mentioned in another post, I'm trying to assemble an inexpensive computer rig for a friend. I know it's unlikely anyone has heard all the components, but anyone got any very positive or exclusionary experience with: NuForce Icon & NuForce S-1 vintage DAC (likely Sonic Frontiers TransDAC/Assemblage DAC1) & Audioengine A2s So USB DAC/amp & speakers versus DAC & active monitors. Leaning towards the latter (already have the DAC which would connect optically to his iMac), but both setups would in the end be ~$500. Unfortunately, buying both and returning the items of one set isn't possible in this case. Any words of advice?

What do you guys think about Zu's? Specifically the Druid mk IV? I'm thinking of picking-up a pair used for around $1600... I briefly heard them at a dealer and really liked what I heard, but they were being driven by a big solid state amp (even though they're very sensitive)... I plan on driving them with a 2 watt decware SET amp. Thanks, mjb

I was looking at building a pair of speakers and was thinking about doing something a bit wacky... has anyone heard the planars they sell on parts express? those Bohlender Graebener ones... either the smaller ones or the insanely large ones? ex. Parts-Express.com - Search Results i found a few projects online using the smaller Neo-8 in both single and line-array configurations... and then all sorts of insane projects using the RD75 75" planar driver with line arrays of larger drivers next to them etc... anyone ever actually listen to any of these things? lol thanks

I have the occasional mono vinyl, and they invariably sound like crap on stereo headphones or speakers. You get a wonderful stereo image of all the noise crud on the record's surface, while the music is a lifeless dead-center image. There also may be some sort of smearing from two speakers (that can never be exactly the same) trying to reproduce the same signal. Not long ago I heard a local fellow's pure mono setup, the speaker was a gigantic 50's or 60's Bozak cabinet with multiple drivers. The sound was very surprising, and extremely enjoyable. I'm not sure if you need the same kind of speakers to capture most of the magic, but since then I've been looking at my unu…

I sold my T-Amp and want something else. I have Athena AS-B1 bookshelf speakers so I am not really looking for anything super fancy. For now, I will be using Pico as pre-amp. I looked at T-Amp 2, but i'd rather get something more expensive and higher quality. Would prefer not to go vintage route coz been there done that already. Any recommendations are welcomed.

Powered speakers make a lot of sense to me, but they don't seem to be popular in Hi-Fi, so what's the deal? Are there some fundamental disadvantages to using powered speakers, or is it just custom and tradition?

I've decided to put together a B22 as speaker amp, but when it comes to speakers, I'm pretty clueless. I'm building it single-ended, so I can expect 18wpc. That seems wimpy compared to a lot of other amps, but the math, from what I can tell, says that should be enough for reasonably efficient speakers in a medium sized room. What kind of speakers am I looking at with this kind of power?
