I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by Dusty Chalk,

No, that's not a typo, but no, I don't truly mean "at any price" greater than US$200, I just mean this: I recently put my speaker rig back together. The Manley Stingray -- at 12 tubes, 8 of them power tubes -- is just way too warm for a closed room in the summer. I am seriously considering getting this amp as my "summer amp". What is the next step up from that? Obviously, it doesn't have any competition at the US$200 price point, but is there something in the "not much more" category that I should be considering? It'd be nice if it was a pretty strong amp (I.E. ~> 50 Wpc). The Dynaudios suck current like a Greek sucks down souvlaki. (With apologies to any Greeks out…

I currently have a yamaha M80 amp that I found on craigslist for 150 bucks but I've been getting the itch to upgrade. I have no experience with speakers and don't know what a decent budget amp for magnaplanar speakers would be. What would you recommend?

I know the Parasound line is well regarded in many circles. The Halo A21 amp particularly so but how do they do with preamps? Anyone got thoughts on the Halo P3?

http://www.usheraudiousa.com/products/loudspeakers/dancer-series/cp-8571 Has anyone here heard these? They received high praise from Yikes, and doing some searching a few other people at Hfi (not newbies) liked them as well and preferred them to most speakers in its price range.

Has anyone had experience with Mirage speakers?

  7. Started by Dusty Chalk,

I know, right? Anyway, it's a home-made speaker system based on an Ikea salad bowl, some Pioneer car speakers and some corresponding digital amps. The salad bowl is inverted, drilled holes through, and acts as the enclosure. parts list videos, including construction of the speakers I think it's pretty obvious that I was initially drawn to this because of the music-making-in-linux aspect, but since the speaker is polydirectional, that ended up interesting me, too. I guess the big question is, is it optimal? I presume they picked car speakers for their ability to project (I.E. go loud), but I'm not as interested in that as I am in fidelity, so immediately, …

  10. Hi I'm looking around for speaker set ups that are under 500, they will be used for events, such as movies and parties at the U of C's international house. are there any good ones out there, or should i go for somethig like this: Amazon.com: Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System: Electronics Thankyou.

What components do you need in the chain between the cd player and the speakers themselves to drive them and give them volume control? What brands to you recommend and why? ( Price point under $1500; goal involving, full, dynamic, relsoving sound-not too bright or edgy, yet not rollled off on highs, mids well present but not over stated, bass, foundational, but not dominant, boomy or muddy, just tight. Listen to acoustic singer emphsis and jazz. Transparency and immediacy critical. (posted something like this on Source site referring to dac issue and didn't get response.)

  13. Well I finally have my Europa's back from repair tonight and before they get shipped off to their new owner on Monday I figured I'd take some time to jot down how they compare to my Tyler Acoustic Linbrook Sigs. When the Europa's were my main speakers probably the biggest factor in wanting to upgrade was a lack of bass. I was able to confirm that lack of bass pretty soon after my comparison began tonight. While the Europa does well with the leading edge of bass notes (for instance bass guitar or kick drums) they fail pretty miserably at having the proper weight behind those instruments. For comparison sake listening to bass guitars and kick drums on the Tylers is a…

I've loved my Outlaw Audio 1050 receiver, but it was time for something new. I thought about Denon again, but after the terrible experience with Denon service, I figured I'd be better off avoiding them. And considering my efforts to show something resembling fiscal responsibility, I was looking at lower-end Denon pieces which were very ugly uninspired. So I checked out HK stuff for the first time in years. I had an AVR 25 back in college and liked it. I was looking at the AVR 140 or 240 at the lower end of their line. They're pretty-well discound at Circuit City right now, so I figured I'd swing by and check them out. They're better looking in person than I expected…

Have B&W 805D's and Denon's AVP-A1HDCI Looking at new poweramps and the XPA-1 Gen 2 (https://emotiva.com/products/amplifiers/xpa-1) Specs seem to be pretty good. Anything else I should be considering for my 2.0 setup in the sub $2,000 range?

  16. Ok background:I demo Dynaudio 72se last year sometime in my room and fall in love then order a set. by the time the set came in I completely came up with a new idea for a room..in which time of the same week the Speakers came in I remodeled my room with thicker ceiling tiles, carpet, cables, cartridges, bpt thingy, etc Well since I always like to get new gear in I have this problem with actually having the time to sit down and take the patience to get the placement rite and the acoustics. when everything was said and done I had a completely different room and did the most moronic thing I could think of..I completely switched the listening position and speakers around to…

Does anyone know where to buy rubber surrounds for an 8" woofer? It's a Focal 8k415fhdg. I think it is a version of the Focal 8k415 but tweaked for Hales Design Group. The rubber surround has a hole in it. I have the piece that was torn out and I've toyed with the idea of using adhesive to put it back in place but I would like to replace the whole thing if I can. Thanks

  20. I'm still in the market for a good, powerful amp. I snoozed on that Bel Canto, and I haven't seen a Musical Fidelity A300CR power amp (not the integrated) in a while when I was liquid (ain't liquid right now). But looking ahead, anyone heard a Pathos amp? It seems to combine power with tube preamplification; so, theoretically, the best of both worlds. Is it? And it needs high frequency extension, that's one thing the MF had in spades -- air. Nice air. Effortless air. And nice extended deep bass. Anyone heard any of the new breed of digital amps with the ICEpower modules? The new Cary, AudioSource, B&O, bunch o' others have that technology. Are they any good?

It's that magical time of year again. Black Friday-Cyber Monday! I've been asked to purchase a PA system for speaking events, and I'm trying to narrow my choices down to 2 portable, compact systems. The Bose L1 1S is slightly more expensive, and it requires a power cable. The JBL Eon One has a battery for cordless use. I've read that the Bose sounds better and it has a wider dispersion pattern. Otherwise, the two are similar, with bass units at the bottom and compact built-in mixers. Does anybody have experience with this new generation of compact PA speakers? I think either speaker will be good, almost overkill, since we probably won't need them for m…

Listened to these speakers last week at a local dealer. Impressions below written from saved notes. Source Component: Rotel RCD-1072 Amplifiers: Rotel RC-1070 pre-amp & RMB-1075 power amp Impressions: I started off by going straight into the 684, as it's the cheaper model. However, I immediately realized that my listening would be futile without a comparison of some kind, and there were a bunch of other B&W speakers in the room that could be switched between at will, so I ABX'd the 684 against the next-higher-up model, the 683, for all of my listening. Reference CD tracks included: - Alison Krauss & Union Station - New Favorite - "Let Me Touch Yo…

I noticed that Acoustic Energy finally released a floorstander model in their Reference Series. My pair of 12-year-old Aegis Two speakers (made in Malaysia) sound pretty good for super-cheap $200 speakers – it makes me wonder what they've done since then. Online reviews of the Reference 1 and the rarer Reference 2 seem pretty positive... has anybody heard them?
