I Can't Hear You, Speaker Man, I'm Listening to My Headphones

  1. Started by Salt Peanuts,

So after 3 months, I'm getting bit tired of needing to get up each time I want to change the volume. Assuming some unexpected expenses don't come up, I've been thinking about Adcom GFP-750, maybe in a month or two. Are there anything else I should be looking for? Also, anyone know anything about PS Audio's P-200?

Want to play some classical stuff for the little one (get them started on hi-fi while they are young What's the range of dB (C-weighted) safe for babies < 6month?

Sold off my ol' Paradigm MilleniaOneCT systems and Maggie .7's for some nice fat 20.7's and the mini maggies on my desktop. Driving the kit with ... MacBook Pro -> McIntosh D100 -> MC252 -> 20.7 +-> PrimaLuna ProLogue Integrated -> mini maggies Sounds amazing! Thinking of upgrading my WA7/tp for their DiaLogue as a dedicated HP amp.

I found a very nice deal on good condition and perfect working order Stax ELS-F81 speakers. Not the pair that I found but they look like this: I am very tempted to buy them, but I will need to get rid of my Apogees since I simply don't have space for forth speaker pair. Looks like Stax should play nice with my DNA-1 or Symphonic Line amps and give me a completely different presentation of what I have now. Do you think I should side-grade?

I was looking at building a pair of speakers and was thinking about doing something a bit wacky... has anyone heard the planars they sell on parts express? those Bohlender Graebener ones... either the smaller ones or the insanely large ones? ex. Parts-Express.com - Search Results i found a few projects online using the smaller Neo-8 in both single and line-array configurations... and then all sorts of insane projects using the RD75 75" planar driver with line arrays of larger drivers next to them etc... anyone ever actually listen to any of these things? lol thanks

I am in the process of trying to simplify my life as much as possible. Additionally, I have found that, while I will spend many hours a week listening to headphones, it is not unusual to go weeks at a time without turning on the stereo. I live in a small apartment, with neighbors downstairs I don't want to disturb, and I also just don't like loud music anymore. And I am no fan of SE sound. All of these things have me thinking that getting rid of the 300B amps and the floor standing full range drivers might be a good thing. So, I am looking for advice on what to replace it with. I have a source/preamp I am happy with. So, this really comes down to power amp and spea…

I'm planning a speaker rig for my room, but I don't know what to get. They'll be used on my desk from pretty close to me, and the rears will be near walls. I'm planning on buy an Almarro 318B. It's 18wpc, so I guess the speakers should be relatively efficient. I'm considering the Omega Comcact Hemps, Amphion Argon2, Almarro's M1A, whatever these are (because those PHY drivers are supposed to be great). But I really have no idea. I'm curious about the whole fullrange driver + SET thing that people rave about, but I don't know how to accomplish that with monitors. I want something I'll never want or need to replace. These also look interesting. Oh, I'll probably ad…

About six months ago I got swept up in the Insignia decent speaker for cheap craze and purchased a pair really cheap at Worst Buys with the intention of trying my hand at the Danny Richie Mods. My plan was to replace the mediocre speaker pair in my office with some nice looking and killer sounding moded speakers..........rrriiiiiight! http://www.gr-research.com/insignia.shtm Bottom line, they sound awful, worse than stock. I checked every resistor connection, inductor, and how I ran the connections. Out of desperation I sent the crossovers to Danny who hooked them up and ran a sweep. He found no problems, but they sound awful. I have fifteen hours of painful bur…

My sister wants me to help her with ideas for a simple system under $500 or close. She will use her Ipod. I think she also has an airport express? Here is what she said: i want something that looks good (minimal design) and, of course, sounds good and can connect to my ipod. i don't really have a home system - just a small bookshelf stereo that i might get rid of. She is definitely not an audiophile. Any thoughts appreciated.

  11. Sold my Legacy Signature III's last week and so was without floorstanding speakers for a total of, oh...3 hours before I hopped on audiogon and dealt a perilous blow to my unwitting Visa Now my speaker ownership history looks like this (* indicates previous favorites): Ascend Acoustics 340, 170 Polk LSi 15, 9 *Tyler Acoustics Taylo Reference Monitors *Tannoy Eyris DC3 Tyler Linbrook Signature Monitors *Legacy Signature III Tannoy Dimension TD10 <-- new So yesterday my new Tannoy Dimension TD10's arrived. They are very "interesting" looking - I love 'em I'll try to get some pics up soon. I really should get them in a bigger room than the one they're in, …

I'm shopping around for a pair of speaker stands to hold my Quad 11L and I've read conflicting opinions regarding which material is better, so I'm wondering what you guys think? Does it make a noticeable difference? For what it's worth, I'm looking for something around 30 inches, with a budget of 100-120$, so feel free to shoot recommendations.

  14. I have a friend who is looking for good active monitors, under $400 or so, and mostly used in a near-field/desktop setup. Coming more from the pro audio (mixing and post-production) side than the audiophile side, so as flat a frequency response as possible would be nice. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance. In case anyone cares, I'll also be sending along my modded Fostex T20v2 and T40v1 to this friend on indefinite loan to see if they're up to the task of being good studio headphones. I'm sad to say that I really don't listen to headphones very much, anymore, otherwise you'd have to pry the T40 off my cold, dead hands.

Ok so I have finally scored the DNA 1 rev A of Audiogon and partnered with my Alon 1s it sounds great. I have been using the pre outs from the Berendsen IPA-80 as well as an Luminous Audio passive volume control partnered with a Moth Audio switchbox. I am starting to set my sites on a preamp and have a few candidates: Bent Audio TAP (a bit out of range atm but still obtainable) Placette Audio passive preamp from what I have read may be tops in the transparency dept in this price range McCormacj Audio RLD preamp, these show up used for $700ish on Agon and Steve McCormack offers upgrades to them. There are three levels of upgrades 700/1100/1400, I'd probably go gusto…

Hey guys, Looking for a pair of monitors to pair up with a Pass Labs X250. Details is the priority but a tidbit of warmth is ok with me, hence the Pass amp. A big plus if the speakers come in a white finish; budget is around 3K. Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

  17. I started this on head-fi as well but I thought for the poor suckers that aren't allowed to post on headfi anymore or simply just don't wanna I post it here also So, as title states I'm looking for a replacable amp for the Akai AM-69. The problem is it's broke as it provides the music with A LOT of noise and cracking. Very unpleasant to say the least. We once had it fixed and it worked for a while but it came back again, driving me nuts. Here's the catch: It has 2 coax inputs and 2 optical inputs. 7 line-ins and 3 line-outs. 180watt with 4 ohm and 100 watt with 8 ohm. The rest of the specs I do not have on me now, so if anyone needs to no more, let me know and…

Hello all, for a long time I've been looking into speakers for the living room. The living room(it's a living room/dining room) is 14'x27'x8'(WxLxH), the sofa is placed 12ft from the wall. I've been looking at getting these; Magnepan MMG For Sale | AudiogoN I don't have any amplifiers so recommendations for one would be nice. I have been thinking about the Emotiva XPA-2. I'd be happy to hear any other recommendations, the budget for the speakers is of ~$1000, although I can stretch it a little bit but I would prefer not to so I can get the other components. Thanks.

Yeah! I just scored this Omega Super 8 Alnico (formerly SuperHemp, but with new drivers), which is on its way to me (seller's photo). Will be driving with my Almarro A205AmkII and various sources. Have had good experience with Omega Super 5, so I splurged.

  21. Started by postjack,

Whats the deal with this speaker? Anyone heard one? One of my common complaints about modern audiophile speakers is their inability to rock, and one thing to blame this on is very few speaker manufacturers produce speakers with large woofers anymore. We're lucky to find even 6.5" woofers, most seem to top out at 5.25". The Klipsch Heresy III has a big ass 12" woofer, and reviews of this model, which is still in production and "reasonably" priced at about $1600/pair, are generally pretty good. They rock out well, meaning nice midbass thump, at the expense of refinement and resolution. Just curious if any headcasers have any personal experience with these speakers.

Seems there's a very high chance I'll be getting into my first choice hospital for my residency which means I can buy a house in the neighboring town. I'm looking for a full range set of speakers, that normally sell for under $4500-5000 used. Mainly listen to all types of jazz and rock. I listen to pretty much all types of rock, but if I had to place emphasis it would be classic and prog rock. What I'd really like is exceptional imaging, soundstage, midbass and midrange performance. I don't need the absolute authority in bass and treble extension. I'd prefer to keep this strictly 2 channel; no subwoofer. Basically something fun to listen to that still have all thos…

I'm going to be re-arranging my HT/speaker rig pretty soon and I'm going to need different length speaker cables than what I have now. I don't have a budget in mind but I'm not going to spend a ton on this. I'll be needing two 10ft runs for the main speakers, a short 5ft cable for the center channel and two 25ft runs for the rear channels.

This is a spin-off of another thread: I have long wondered why IKEA does not make flat-pack speakers. Either a simple, but relatively large (larger than what you could conveniently load into a very small car anyways) single driver or 2-way speaker in a rectangular box (maybe with a port?) OR a crazy-super-sexxy single driver folded horn. I wonder if the market demand for a nicer speaker is just too small
