  1. Finally received Front/Back plate for the 5U Dissipante - almost took forever. Decided to have a groove dividing the front plate into an upper 2U and a lower 3U, to have it look less bulky; it's still one 5U piece. The "pi" sort of symbols the topology To be continued ...

    The internet showed me this.
  3. In terms of price, they are aimed at the same market. In terms of quality, well.... If you do a search for electrostatic headphone amplifier schematics, both commercial and DIY, you'll find a lot of resistor loaded output stages, you'll find several constant current loaded output stages, and you'll find some transformer output stages, but you won't find any choke loaded output stages. The Woo WES uses choke loaded output stages. Now, there are two possible reasons why they are unique in this respect. The first is, they have a patent and nobody else can use it - however choke loaded output stages have been around for a long time, so that's not it. The second reason is, they don't know what they are doing and are using an expensive topology that is demonstrably inferior for this particular purpose. See my thread on current requirements for electrostatic headphone output stages for infinite gory detail on why current loads are the optimum way of loading output stage active devices from a strictly engineering perspective. Second, the WES has a passive power supply rather than a regulated power supply. Now, Stax also use a passive power supply, however they are much cheaper and much smaller so there's a good engineering reason for that. In an allegedly state-of-the-art design, there is no reason NOT to use a regulated power supply since the ideal power supply provides a perfectly stable, noiseless and unvarying voltage regardless of the demand on it, something no passive supply can do, and something a regulated supply is much closer to doing. In other words, IMHO the WES is state-of-the-wallet, but not state-of-the-art.

Picked up a minty carrera reissue at a price I couldn't turn down. Debating whether I should put on a deployant strap or keep the tang & buckle.

No kidding... My gut says I'm gonna get hit here in central NJ. Harbor Frieght and the home depot only had the normal amount of people buying salt. Definitely not pandemonium. This tells me we're screwed as nobody is fearing the worse. I got a full tank in both cars, the snow blower, and the generator with another 10 gallons in cans and some firewood just in case. And, I have a six pack of miller lite, half a pint of BB Brandy, the makings for onion dip and chocolate chip cookies. I'm F'n set man
  6. Well that was very quick shipping from FPE , Initially I was going for an all out black box, but FPE don’t do anodising after milling leaving the panels with silver edges, which got me thinking silver sides would help blend in more naturally, so that’s what I did. I’m really happy with the result overall, the fit is really good, the side edges and base of board have have good clearances. I’m still waiting on feet, final LED and volume knob. I’ll do some testing and see how I go with the temperature, uncased I was getting around ~65° over the regs, THATs and outputs, I may have to turn it down a little, depending... Here are the FPE files; https://akashare.egnyte.com/dl/PjWB17863x The side panels are profile 1 cut to a length of 172.7mm.

Power went out about ninety minutes ago. Generator is up and running but doesn't power the oven... So we persevered and finished cooking the lasagna on the grill.
  8. I am using the laziest version of the "French mod" (cut a Shure foamie to fit and stick it in the middle) and it's great. I have heard no difference in sound beyond less tizz. Completely reversible. Hard to go wrong with it. Along with an amp that really grips them, I love the HD-800 now. My beloved vintage RS-1 gets almost no head time, now.
  9. So, I've recoated a formerly fubar'ed pair of SR-5 drivers with Staticide 6300, and it seems to have changed the sound of the drivers - in the GP frame (which I extracted an untouched pair of drivers from), it sounds a great deal less bright than the drivers that lived there previously. I've already tried recoating these drivers with lesser antistatic solutions before, and the balance would never come out right. With Staticide however, it just "saturates" after 2-3 coats, and the balance just rights itself... within this data point, anyway.
  10. except mine was a very little butt, so maybe an erasure song.

  13. or just go to a good southern restaurant. No one needs to eat slimy gross okra. It is fantastic, but not if it'd poorly prepared.
  14. If you want to try okra, yes. I would suggest cooking it*. *this has no resemblance to canned.

Best wishes, Nate, and all the northern pals.
  16. I'm not 100% sure that is cromulent.
  17. I heard replacing the plankton with some krill will make things more copacetic.
  18. It's an amazing thickener, which would be great for stroganoff. Have you ever had tempura okra, Steve? Or the traditional blackened? Okra is also delicious stuffed with cheese and battered and deep-fried. Of course, an acorn would be delicious stuffed with cheese and battered and deep-fried.

  20. Since you want to go to Dusty level pedantry, I did some googling http://www.head-fi.org/t/534027/hd800-price-hike So there was a price hike and decrease at some point, but not the one I was thinking of
  21. No, I don't think that's what you are mis-remembering.
  22. I bought one from headroom the first day they went on sale and it was $1399

  26. yep, this is indeed the board that everyone has been waiting for. If someone would like to doublecheck it I'll send it off for a requote in the morning. That is assuming I have power I put off having a generator lockout panel installed in my load center so I have to run cords under the door or in the window. Gotta keep the mini reef running!
  27. RIP Joni.....too young..... And RIP to an unknown to most, but a big part of my college and post-college years: John Lever, drummer for the band Chameleons UK and a bunch of others. One of the hardest hitters I've known. Got to meet him a couple years ago, great gent who just loved music.
  28. I'm definitely going to give carnitas a shot this way. Next will be lamb vindaloo.
  29. Instant pot pork shoulder. Wow. 90 minutes to fantastic pork.
  30. Waiting for Brad.
  31. Thundercat - Drunk I was expecting a lot more from a "genius" behind the success of Kendrick Lamar. I can't help experiencing that sort of "heard it all before" feeling in a Doobie Brothers-Stevie Wonder kind of way.

I'd wager we've gotten 600+mm in the last 5 days.
  33. Obligatory, "...well then don't rub them there..."! My penis sheds a little if I rub it too much. Sorry, not being helpful -- I have corrosive sweat to certain materials (especially the pleather on Sony MDR-V6/-7506 headphones) -- it's just my body chemistry, nothing untoward going on. Perhaps...?
  34. Shiny and sticky on the bottom-rear? Nope, no idea what would cause that.
