  2. you need to get a toolish watch that looks better with a bit of wear and tear - that citizen is gonna get scratchy real fast! or just accept that all watches get scratched up and dinged in the end, just like our poor souls... (sobbing)

  3. I finally realized that wearing vintage and otherwise luxury watches to a job where I run around and bump into shit constantly was maybe not a good idea, so I used some of said store credit. I still needed something that would easily fit under a cuff. This Citizen Signature is a great watch. I didn't like the gold accents in the web pics, but it's really nice in person. Good complications. Build quality is way, way above the price range, quality wise.

  6. Had a chance to play with HomePod yesterday. Some random impressions: It is really small. I knew it was going to be small from reading reviews, but it is even smaller that I thought. It is about the size of a cantaloupe. It feels like a bit of a beta product. We had a bunch of Airplay drop outs when we navigated away from the music play apps on our phones. Neither of us had Apple Music, but the iOS Tidal and Spotify apps worked fine over Airplay except for the occasional dropouts. I imagine a lot of this will get fixed with updates. This isn't replacing anyone's two-channel system. As a smart speaker, it is impressive and possibly the best sounding smart speaker I've heard. That being said, we tested it in a larger room and I thought it struggled. It is solid for what it is, but there is only so much it can do in a decent sized room. Apple really needed to have stereo functionality with two HomePods at launch. A bunch of reviewers mentioned that Apple demoed the stereo functionality for them and that it sounded great. I believe them and I think having a second HomePod in a stereo configuration might help a lot. One HomePod sounds big for a mono speaker, but it still sounds like a mono speaker. Overall, I'd say I'm lukewarm about HomePod. It is impressive for what it is, but don't go expecting a $350 smart speaker to work miracles. There is only so much it can do sonically in a moderate/large room, even with whatever DSP tricks Apple has worked into it. I get the impression that a lot of the reviewers who gushed about the sound quality don't know what a proper stereo rig can sound like. EDIT: Looks like Apple's staged tests for the media that the HomePod easily won against the other smart speakers might not stand up: http://pogueman.tumblr.com/post/170722337727/head-to-head-does-the-apple-homepod-really-sound

  7. There are a few parts to this, partially it is charge leakage, partially it is mechanical and finally...it has to be a coating issue as well.

  8. Yes, I saw that cover on Qobuz too and sampled a few tunes out of curiosity, but it's not the same type of music. I'm now listening to the new Laurie Anderson & Kronos Quartet "Landfall" which is freely available at the NPR's First Listen section.

  9. Yeah, my post is actually somewhat in jest. I strongly recommend the Cree since it has more proving time behind it. But if someone is impatient and does not mind risking burning down their house when something goes horribly wrong, then the ROHM is always there!

  12. It's jazzy vocal pop. Her band is amazing, we attended her concert live a couple of years ago and had a great time. She sings with taste and soul, in the Billie Holiday or Amy Winehouse kind of way. She tries to give a different touch to standards and has her own compositions

  17. Got my spare parts GRLV PSU all finished up for the mini stax amps today. Wiring is a little ugly since I left the transformer leads long in case I ever want to repurpose the transformer again and left the other primary intact for 220V. Used an inline fuse because there wasn't really a good spot on the back panel that wouldn't look weird or collide with the board. The Kemet caps were nice and short enough for me to put in the case but since they're fat required adjusting some of the other bits before soldering to make sure they fit. Had some decent little heatsinks on the pass transistors originally, but even though the amp only pulls about 300-400mA, they got way too hot too quick. The bottom plate worked fantastic though and once assembled, the whole chassis spreads heat to all parts pretty well. And I just noticed in the picture that I forgot to scrub all the flux off those when I remounted them. Well, better go fix that. Hope you guys enjoy this particular combination of spare parts pile and overkill. Only cost me about $70 to put together with what I had laying around and half that was the case.

  18. Nothing to fear. With some practice everyone can do SMD soldering and it's fun.

  19. RIP Johann Johannsson! Found dead in Berlin at a mere 48 years. A wonderful composer from Spritzer's hometown (which is home to many fantastic artists). https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/johann-johannsson-visionary-composer-behind-sicario-dies-at-48-1083619
