  1. Bryan, I know you specified vintage but there are some good modern R2R dacs. Take a look at the Denafrips Ares II, for example https://www.vinshineaudio.com/product-page/denafrips-ares-r2r-dac

  2. I know this will be very un-HC of me, but balanced DAC's have generally been more trouble than they are worth for me, especially when used with a balanced amp. It really comes down to what headphones you are driving and how much voltage swing you need, how much gain your amp has, and what sort of attenuator you're working with. If you get a hot source, with a high gain amp (I know the GSX has a switch), and sensitive cans you may just drive yourself crazy (pun intended). So careful what you wish/ask for and best of luck in your search.

  6. Packed up a GLite PSU to send to everyone's favorite fat-headed Mexican: Banana for scale. I didn't have any other box in the house that was both smaller and could contain the Elpac.

  9. Especially if you had one before I understand really liking the 300m. The friend with that aquaterra also has the new black dial SS 300m. He likes it a lot and switches between strap and bracelet. In fact he has an original bond 300m that he bought back in the day. Still in very good condition considering it was his only watch until I became a very bad influence on him in ~2013. He's bought about 10 omegas since then lol!

  10. If you are thinking of rubber strap and want omega you should also look at the aquaterra, my buddy just got this exact model. They also make TT versions with the rubber strap that are very nice.

  12. Shame I missed that one, Jacob, but thank you for the heads-up all the same. I swooped in a bit late...LOL. Interesting choice, SeaWolf. I do like the transparency through to the mechanicals...enjoy seeing how mechanical things function. Sounds like you have a good woman looking out for your. I have fought off the temptation to buy a watch I keep thinking about. Tried it on when we were in Aruba last year (w/o the Sedna gold unfortunately) and liked the feel and look of it. I had just a tad big of difficulty with the rubber strap and it is on the larger side for my wrist at 42mm. Only tried it the one time moving fairly briskly after dinner. Need to give it another romp. HS

  15. Made trip #2 to empty a storage unit for my dad. Good and bad news: Bad - he needed my help, he has had 2 hip surgeries but now has an inner ear "thing" and needs a walker for balance. Was pretty tough to see, but he is quite the trooper Good - what I was cleaning out was about 24 boxes of LP's and acetates....I'll try and see what's there (some are pretty fucking dusty/dirty, and some of the older acetates have broken) Bad - Karen (who is up in our Maine condo, I'll join her Saturday) is gonna be pissed at all these boxes in our dining room Good - there may be a couple store owners or contacts interested in the lot Bad - the condition of many of these is not what I was hoping But, unit 578 is clear, and he won't have to spend $400 for the next lease/payment.....

  16. so i have a big problem with the morons that charge stupid money to add a tube buffer to a solid state output stage. modwright instruments, and lampizator for example. you start with something that has a 200 ohm output impedance, and by the time you are done with the cathode follower, its a 1.5 k output impedance, or in the case of the lampizator something like a 3k or more output impedance. its stupid and counterproductive. but hey there are these glowing things sticking out the top. you can't make a decent i/v converter with tubes without 6 triodes per channel. and even then, solid state is far better. r2r is a voltage output anyway, not a current output

  19. Today has been a nice and interesting day. I finished a mini T2 with active battery. The copper color board on right side in picture in previous post. Late afternoon I were ready for the first power on. One DMM to measure one side verses ground and another to measure the other side. High voltage clicked in – no explosion – on side showed a few volts verses ground while the other almost 400 volt verses ground. It took some time for me to realize that the 400 volt reading in fact was the BIAS. I’m getting to old for this. When I found the right measuring points I had very nice readings. Batteries are always interesting. Readings as follow. Left +194V and -443V, right +196and –443V. So they also seem to be alright. (using 640V instead of original 740V) Connecting headphone. Very noticeable hum but the music sounded good. After a while very annoying noise came. The noise almost disappeared when I approached the trimmer with the screwdriver but came back when I pulled back my hand. Turned power off and changed the small tubes, power up again, lower my guard and went for a cup of coffee and… it all exploded… So tomorrow I have to fix the power supply for the second time within a week. On amplifier board visible; burned traces, resistors and one popped transistor. Maybe I should feed ducks.
