  1. Time for my annual Monterey Jazz report and this year was a good one. On the main (Arena) stage Friday night, a tribute to Quincy Jones. One of the great things about Monterey is the way artists join together for special sets. This was one of those. Quincy was introduced by Clint Eastwood (a regular here) and the band was led by Christian McBride. John Clayton conducted a jazz orchestra plus many featured players. Richard Bona (bass), Dave Crusin (keys), Lewis Nash (drums), Hubert Laws (flute), Alfredo Rodrigues (piano), Valerie Simpson (of Ashford and Simpson fame vocals) and the list could go on and on. Amazing set with tunes from Quincy's various albums. Saturday night Terri Lyne Carrington's Mosaic Project featured Lizz Wright and Valerie Simpson in a finesse vs elemental force duet that was awesome. Carrington's band has a horn player, Ingrid Jensen that was killing. Jensen made another appearance with Branford Marsalis Quartet with Kurt Elling. Another awesome set to finish the night. Sunday included a wonderful commissioned work by Wayne Shorter Quartet with a wind ensemble. There were other fantastic Arena acts like Pat Metheny, Celcle McLorin Savant and The Bad Plus Joshua Redmond but what really put this year ahead of many were the artists on the other stages. Bill Frizell, Christian McBrides Trio, Stanley Cowell, young Joey Alexander's Trio, John Patitucci's Electric Guitar Quartet, Dr Lonnie Smith, Still Dreaming with Joshua Redmond and Brian Blade plus the last band I saw, Joshua Redmond's original Quartet who played stuff from his early days and even a slow, lush version of Stella by Starlight. Really a memorable year!

  2. Had some old college friends come in I haven't seen in years, and met up with another one who just moved to town a few months ago. I was the culinary tour guide. At Taconooga, we shared some fries cactus. I had chicken and steak Taconooga tacos, with cheese and corn. Friends had chorizo, lengua, and a handful of others. Then the non-taco eating friend had the largest chicken tamale I've come across. Turns out this place offered something my friend wanted to try. We were going to order this top one to sample (corn truffle one) but then the server said they can do half that and half of the bottom (squash.) Not my scene, but I did enjoy the corn truffle one more. There was some gelato from Milk & Honey not pictured, before we went to get drinks elsewhere. Well, someone got so drunk (2nd time in her life to get drunk) we had to wait a while for her to recover, so she and I split some ox tail with a side of fried plantains at a Cuban rum bar called Embargo '62. The drinking thread will be updated, but there was a 151 soaked crouton that was in a beverage we shared... It was technically consumed. But served its purpose well in the moments leading up to its demise. Great bloody day. **BRENT** Sent from my ONEPLUS A3000 using Tapatalk

  3. I have good news. Song Huei responded saying that they can make up to 99 pots for $4 each depending on the shaft we want. It seems cheap but when I converted the price from The Audio Guild site they cost about $6 for the stereo pots. From the email it seems like this is leftover material from bigger orders which is why they can do a small order. Here is what they said: Okay.. we have element stock for making 99pcs. But I am not sure your shaft length. If you need 20mm round shaft (20KQ) : 57 pcs. 25mm round shaft (25KQ) : 99pcs available. So... please let me know what is quantity you need ?? RK2142G-A10K L-20KQ or RK2142G-A10K L-25KQ @USD 4.0 each. Terms : Exwork. - - - Have a nice day ^^ Since I have been communicating with them I don't mind doing the order.

  4. Spaetzle und Kugel -- Not Your Average Joe's take on this very traditional dish, which is surprisingly...traditional (they usually have their own take on everything).

  5. A little under two weeks to go, and Xavier is still tearing me up. You'll be happy to know that my mom, her husband, and my aunt have all donated to him. None have donated to me. Here's a shot I just found from the time trial he raced in. So proud of this kid! **BRENT**

  8. If sending back defective pots is an option then I don't mind going through the extra work to ship them back. I'll ask about testing and their return policy.

  9. I like Rimowa luggage. We have some metal stuff, which is cool but heavy, and we have some plastic stuff, which would be great. Extremely light, four wheels, lots of size options, convenient packing arrangement in two halves. Check it out.

  10. It's just a matter of preference. I'd like to know more about your view of "best resolution", because I like hearing everything into the mix, but I dislike that sense of artificial resolution which at times is produced by excessive low-mid treble.

  11. Yeah, I just picked up both of those on SACD. You all want to listen to only audiophile music in high res, that's on you. Personally, I want to listen to the best resolution recordings of my favourite music (well, except for Rhino's Black Sabbath remasterings, which were ruined by the remastering more than the resolution). I understand that you people don't "get" my point of view, but I don't understand you all actively discouraging people from listening to their favourite music that way.

  12. I do believe we've discussed the use of The Cars to qualify high end audio recently. Let's just say the responses were mixed.

  13. Thanks! There is something special about a GS that you can't really understand until you've handled one. I was pretty pleased with my old Sinn 103 st, even after trying out several blancpains, omegas, rolexes and panerias at different watch GTGs, but this GS is just in a different league from everything else i have ever handled. The overall finish and sense of quality is just unbelievably high! At first i was kind of worried about walking around with something so valuable, but it's been stuck to my wrist since i've bought it, and its not coming off any time soon. the poor sinn has been laying in the drawer for weeks now...

  14. Will be trying Insomnium today as well, but starting with something more relaxed and absolutely perfect for the first autumn morning that actually feels like autumn. James Blake - The Colour in Anything Edit - seems like inserting album art isn't working....
