  1. Anyone here, particularly you steel-frame fans, have an opinion regarding old-school friction shifters?

    Remember when...

Good on you, Steve. The "what if that was my Mom?" question is a good check on our behaviours, and one I use a lot lately.
  3. Great pics everyone! catscratch - those EdMika adapters look great & well-made, But it is my understanding that there are issues with focusing to infinity (and mirror contact) with some lens + full-frame camera body combinations. Just FYI.
  4. I love "Happy Endings"! Elisha is hilarious and hot. So sad to see it cancelled
  5. "Luther (Season 2)" - liked a lot, great ending ep, although it felt a bit rushed. "Rectify" - opening ep was interesting. Slow-burn kind of start, which I don't mind. Will continue to see where it goes. DVR-ed the "Top of the Lake" marathon yesterday, so will check that out in the next days.
  6. I liked "Continuum" quite a bit. It has a proper combination of sci-fi & human relationships, with a focus on the latter. Plus your comments re: Nichols' toughness, vulnerability, & pretty are spot on.
  7. Luther (Season 1) - awesome. Couldn't stop watching, so we marathoned the whole first season. This is a prime example of good TV. Alice = love!
  8. Same order as their show the other night: The Sea The Sea (EP): Amy Speace “How To Sleep In A Stormy Boat”:

    RIP Jonathan Winters

A great talent & one of my favs from very early on. Awesome timing. So sad to hear of his passing. Rest in peace.
  10. guzziguy - hope your niece heals up well & quickly. Vicki/Jeff - nice racks. Want. pigmode - jealous of your locale. Btw, my wife was gifted an older, Canadian-made Miele road bike from a a former iron-woman competitor friend. The white pearl paint has seen a lot of miles, but it's not too bad & the original Miele decals are about 90% intact. It seems the accompanying mishmosh of components have been swapped in at various points along the way: - Shimano Tiagra derailleurs (older version) - Wolber GTX (France) front rim - Ambrosio Extra 19 (Italy) rear rim - Continental Ultra Sport tires Everything on it works well. The problem is the frame is too big for my wife & too small for me. So the plan is to either sell it outright or trade it in to mitigate the cost of new road bikes for both of us (all with the original owner's blessing). When we had it tuned up & the clipless pedals removed for standard pedals last year, the mechanics at the LBS seemed interested in buying it out from under us. No official offers we made at the time, & we went on our way. Anyone have an idea what would be a reasonable range to accept for such a bike? We just want to be sure we aren't being raked. TIA.
  11. I was thinking of using the ATV as a standalone (non-streaming, hardwired HD) iTunes music server. I have a Touch to use with the Remote app. Do I need a real monitor-type display to get the Apple TV into some mode before using the Remote app, or can I use it from power up? Demo vids online seem to show it in a controller mode only to make menu selections on a TV. Also, is the ATV (latest gen) optical-out limited to 16/48?
  12. ^ Hope she feels better soon, Ed. Same to all you parents of presently sick offspring.
  13. It already sounds better than $20k pre-amps & systems costing >$50k. No need to roll op-amps.

    Deals

Of course you should get back the purchase price with shipping both ways, and certainly a gesture for your troubles ($20 gift card seems reasonable as an initial offer). But what more were y'all expecting?
  15. My condolences as well Knuckledragger
  16. 40" officially here in Hamden, CT as reported by the national services & major networks. Drifts are even higher. Time to start the long process of digging the cars out. Thankful we have electricity.
  17. Nice. Is the idea to use the Marantz as a multi-channel amp for HT, and then use it a pre-amp to the Emotiva for a different set of 2-channel speakers?
  18. If you ultimately plan to go to the Smyth, then an interim solution might just be an extension cable to use with the Thunderpants plugged into the receiver headphone jack.
  19. I realize I am ancient by young people's standards, but I found it impossible to relate to the girls as portrayed in S1, e1. Mostly because I found it incredibly disturbing how abusive a relationship the main character was in, yet she didn't seem to realize it. Worse, she actually seemed to think she was sexually empowered, when I found her anything but. Her friends weren't any better, just messed up in different ways. It was more disturbing thinking about my young nieces living through similar situations as they approach adulthood. Is this really where young women are today? Haven't watched since.
  20. My condolences Dusty. Wayne - you put so much into your Santa persona & activities each year that it is not surprising that you experience some type of post-partum..."something" (I don't want to put words into your mouth or misinterpret). You are a good person, Take some time for yourself to recharge your batteries.
  21. First, the season 3 opener of "Downton Abbey". My wife's newest obsession & I've admittedly been hooked too. So well done. Then S3, eps 2 & 3 of "Portlandia" - We had seen lots of previews on the IFC channel, but for some reason never watched the show. Decided to DVR these eps over the weekend. Omg, this show is f-ing hilarious!
