  1. Watching/listening to this yet again, because I'm in a Calexico kind of mood:
  2. Listening/watching Calexico play with an orchestra -- here is the whole playlist -- the preview shows the first song, but I'm currently on "Fortune Teller" which is jaw-droopingly beautiful:
  3. I don’t know why I thought Royksopp was Avalanches. Oh, and: it took Shazam 4 tries before it could correctly identify this track: Previous attempts include: Days After Days (Syzthaime 2 Dayz Remix) - David R. For You (Original Mix) - Roald Velden Spherical Being - Sidwave
  4. Pink and purr pull...
  5. Happy! Best show ever So fucked up Violence and gore and drugs and sex and an animated children’s show character imaginary friend (voiced by Patton Oswalt) and some brilliant writing EDIT: oooooooh, it's based on a Grant Morrison graphic novel, now everything makes sense.
  6. Because people who join for the express purpose of copying and pasting a post from another site are trouble, in our experience.
  7. I don’t think any of us are familiar with those. Etymotics are the go-to brand in that price range (assuming they even have anything in that price range). But you should upgrade: JH13.
  8. He’s one of my heroes, so I don’t have a favourite. Incantations is probably one of my most frequently revisited. Also Killing Fields , Five Miles Out, and QE2.
  9. Chinese take-out for Chinese Take-Out Day (leftovers at this point -- had some chicken in garlic sauce earlier -- ate mostly the chicken, now eating mostly the vegetables and some hot&sour soup).
  10. Notwist -- everything after 12 (so, 12, Shrink, Neon Golden, The Devil, You + Me, Close to the Glass, Messier Objects, Superheroes, Ghostvillains & Stuff, Johnny and Mary, and Different Cars and Trains)...just because I needed some happy music, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong was a little too upbeat.
  11. Happy birthday, Ric! (party favour noise of non-denominational soundings)
  12. ...because someone likened it to Black Sabbath...oh yeah...all right now...
  13. Yeah, I remember because I went down the rabbit hole of first watching his other videos (especially the other Live Plus Près De Toi videos) and then listening to whole albums on Tidal and liking all of it. Will check out the new album. I liked the video particularly much because it shows all the instruments in enough detail that if you had a fetish for them, you could get off on the close-ups. (I’m thinking of the Wurlitzer electric piano, Linn drum machine, and Roland string synthesizer, not just the two hot women. Alright, maybe not the synthesizer. I mean, who has a fetish for Rolands?)
  14. Happy birthday, Ken! (party favour noise)
  15. https://www.newsweek.com/who-are-seventeen-indonesian-rock-band-swept-stage-tsunami-members-killed-and-1269755?utm_source=Facebook&utm_medium=Social&utm_campaign=NewsweekFacebookSF
  16. Having seen them live...can confirm. On both counts. But I think it’s largely bluster, because if you watch the Eagles of Death Metal movie, he’s actually a great guy.
  17. Several episodes of Am I Bill Bailey? Produced by Edgar Wright and featuring guest appearances by Simon Pegg. He's a pretty freakin' brilliant musician. I hear Vienna, We Are Family, Lady in Red, Bela Lugosi's Dead, I Will Survive, Eye of the Tiger, I Will Always Love You, Paradise City, I'm So Excited, and I don't know if I missed any (starts at 25:22) : And this bit, which starts shortly after the 10 minute mark, had me laughing hard. It basically answers the question, does humor belong in music:
  18. Also, part 2. Also:
  19. I did, but there are apps (like Mixlr showreel pages in any browser) that don't have volume controls. And: I did, pretty much right after I posted. It's not bad in terms of degradation, and does exactly as advertised. And: I appreciate all the other advice. Will live with this for now, since it's not critical listening...will revisit when I critically listen. (Which is hardly ever these days.)
  20. Neither my Mac mini nor my DAC (HRT Music Streamer HD) have a volume control -- what's the better option -- software, or preamp? And if software, what software? I was thinking of something like this for a cheap solution: https://staticz.onfastspring.com/sound-control
  21. Sorry, my bad, I had heard this a couple days ago, but dorked my computer...
  22. But still sombre...has a vaguely Kurt Weill feel to it. Please also check out Young Gods play Kurt Weill. https://www.discogs.com/The-Young-Gods-The-Young-Gods-Play-Kurt-Weill/release/71430 Oooh, ooh, ooh, I just figured out why the title track sounded so familiar -- I heard him sing it ~7 years ago:
