This is outstanding. Techno-thriller, with classic Stephenson humour, but not done ridiculously -- more humanly, like Whedon -- the characters have a sense of humour, and that's where it manifests, in their thoughts, words, actions, etc.

You know, I didn't think of this until just now, but yesterday was the 4th -- I wonder if there was a virus that I missed? I hope not, I'd feel really stupid if I was taken by one of those things. That said, I think it really was the hard drive, because the drive I was using was a "smart" drive, and was reporting imminent failure before it actually failed. But that said, I could see a virus spinning a disk to death.

Me, yesterday: had a wedge of cheese the prior day, so spent the first half of yesterday lying in bed with a stomach ache -- remind me never to eat an entire wedge of cheese in one day, ever again. Spent the second half moping -- my fucking hard drive in my laptop crashed! (I think it had a delayed heat stroke from Monday -- it felt hot, but I had the A/C on, so I just assumed I was having a sinus infection something or something.) Fortunately, I still had the old one, and I managed to save my resume' and some java work that I was in the middle of. Still, very frustrating. Lost at least one FLAC file. Today: Forgot my password on my old hard drive, so reset it, ran all the upgrades on the linux partition, installed Eclipse. Need to find me a local Bánh mì place. Or Shawarma. EDIT: Man, I hate when that happens. I go to maps.google.com, focus on my immediately surrounding area, then enter "shawarma" or "banh mi", and it zooms out the map, and shoves my house in the lower left hand corner of the screen -- the closest of either of those inside the beltway. Chinese it is. I have found an excellent cheap Chinese place, and an excellent Pilin-priced [$10 to $15] Thai place. And of course, Subway. This. I had a diabetic friend who had an accident and didn't have the time off, and was going to take too long to heal, and people stepped up (especially people like me and my boss Jeff, who always 'lost' at the 'use or lose' point of the year anyway).

Wharfedale has a reputation for the sound that I like -- it's been recommended to me by several diverse people after I explained my tastes. If you can get them for only a couple hundred dollars, it's probably worth trying.

There is no "neutral" headphone -- in fact, I wouldn't even recommend it. Just like speakers (the ubiquitous Sony NS-10 comes to mind), you want something that has a fairly wide frequency spectrum, and is slightly elevated at both frequency extremes (elevated because differences in levels in those areas are harder to hear, slightly for obvious reasons). You then want to become familiar with them -- play favourite well-recorded tracks through your system, just as if you were monitoring, and listen to how it sounds through those headphones. Then shoot for that same sound signature. I personally like the Sony MDR-V6/-7506 for this.

What do you want to do? Personally, I wouldn't try to drive both at the same time -- there's a road to problems. Also -- again, me personally -- I wouldn't have a problem with having a custom mod not show up on the front panel, and have to flip something unlabelled on the back. I think it's much more important that the front panel not look modded.

I'm going to have to go back in this thread and catch up -- looks like I missed some good stuff.

It sounds like you haven't talked to him yet. Have you talked to him? If so, I would follow whatever he suggests.

I would stick with headphones that you actually have a warranty, myself. And if you must have skulls on them, draw them on with a Sharpie. I'm personally a fan of Audio-Technica and Sony, amongst others. Also, have some British beer, it's very good.
