Sucks that lead-free means higher melting temps. DIY your own reflow oven with multiple heaters that can isolate the heat you apply to a certain area, so like one big board heater with a smaller (x,y,z) axis heater, with proper cooling system to make sure you don't destroy anything. Only half joking.

The "muffled" top end (more like a comb filter effect) is a function of the housing design and proximity to the ear. The capacitance change from a kettle to ribbon cable isn't that significant (probably, I haven't measured), and that PCOCC crap doesn't make a difference.
