  3. I have the small Makita, it's been great although if you have any desire to run tools it won't do it well. I would add that it didn't come with any accessories of any kind, I picked up a cheap pack from Lowes that had everything I needed and I haven't bought anything else in the 3+ years I've owned it.
  4. I wouldn't want anything with a capacitive touch display for use at the gym and I really don't like the lack of lock function so that you can't inadvertently bump the sleep/wake button.
  5. Anodizing is likely to be a $100+ expense unless you can piggyback on a much larger order. I'd give some thought to trying to find a local powder coat shop and see what they'd charge. I think that'd made a sweet finish for a top panel like that. Otherwise break out the rattle can and be sure to use an appropriate primer/etcher for the aluminum.
  6. So many snarky comments, so little time. No way to play external media makes the aTV worthless to me. Great, you made it super small and sleek and missed the boat on, you know, about half of what a media device should be. I know, I know, buy a mac mini too, eff that, my PS3 does just fine thanks and can still handle the occasional spinning disc.
  7. I think that Mike would have eventually found that out.
  8. Oh man, color me jealous. I miss my S4, despite it being a huge pain in the ass and have often thought about aa newer, better example.
  9. Good lord, Frank, that's just beautiful.
  10. Paid the wife's car off today, a little over a year ahead of schedule. I'm hoping it's got a good 4 years left in it given that it's only 4 years old and has less than 60k on it. If this one gets killed by a hail storm, as the last one did within 6 months of paying it off, I may go mental.
  11. I know it's not great but it's a raise and that's not something to sneeze at these days. I noticed a pretty discomforting trend during my recent change of employment. When I would tell someone that my last day at work was going to be X about 90% of people assumed that I had been laid off and that I'd subsequently be unemployed. When I would tell them that I had elected to make the change and already had a new job lined up most were shocked. Three years ago I didn't know anyone looking for a job, today I know several who have been out of work for more than 6 months and more than a couple who are nearing the two year mark. Good luck Dan!
  12. A handcuffed one, sure. If it does what you want a computer to do then it is a terrific device, but my experience with it and other apple products are that you have to be careful about researching your use case vs. what they assume your use case will be. Flexibility is not its strength, in my opinion.
  13. Yup. Nope.
  14. There are a few listed for sale on HF right now worth looking at, specifically someone has a 7236 for ~$40 which is a pretty reasonable price IMO.
  15. Steve, Awesome.
  16. Halt Birthday Jack!
  17. I just took the dimensions shown on one of Tom's pdfs.

  19. You can bet good $$ that I won't be cutting the holes for the motor run caps my 307A will be using! And I think the 100uF/370VAC caps that I used for the outputs on the original Menace were roughly the size of a can of soda.
  20. I have yet to encounter a 5U* that had a rise time anything like a 5AR4 and I'd wager that I used just about all of them. Certainly the GA, GB and plain G did not in the Menace or HA-2. And yes, 68uF is a great target, although still a pretty big can.
  21. The books are pretty entertaining, I'll say that. I keep meaning to revisit the show but haven't gotten around to it.
  22. I'd try to get the capacitance in the last filter stage down a bit if you can, motor runs of that size (100uF) are brutal chassis work. And really, if you're going to tube-rectify the thing it'd be a sin to use electrolytic caps. EDIT - and I'd go with the 5AR4 over the 5U any day, its semi-soft start is a welcome bonus.
  23. I'll try to call tonight Steve. EDIT: this thread wasn't meant to be locked, not sure why my phone did that...
  24. Steve, With the amp board disco'd from the power supply measure the following: V+ to G V- to G output to ground
