  1. This is Zachary's Amp. And this is Zachary (with his dad Kristopher). Zachary was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL) on March 23, 2007. This is a relatively rare form of cancer, affecting around 4000 Americans each year. Zachary and his family have been battling this disease for almost 4 years and it has taken a physical, mental and financial toll on the family. So how do I fit into this equation? I've known Zach's dad for something like 8 to 10 years, he works for one of my former company's biggest clients and while working together on a few projects we discovered that we shared a lot of common interests. We ended up being members at the same gym and often played hoops together. I'd love to tell you that we're the best of friends but that just isn't the case. But I digress... About 4 months ago Zach had a bone marrow transplant since chemo had been unsuccessful at ridding him of this disease (he went into remission once but relapsed about 3 months later). As of today things are going pretty well, he's finally back home and the prognosis is as good as it can be. Now as most of you know I've spent the better part of my DIY time over the last 6+ years donating my time to people who need help fixing stuff, building stuff to be raffled at meets and doing just about anything else that seemed like it was worth doing. About 6 months ago it occurred to me that I'd probably been missing a big opportunity to do something really meaningful, namely give some value to that time I was spending in my basement. So I hatched a plan to finish something up and raffle it off. That brings us to today. So what's up for raffle? The TWP Ventus that I've been muddling around with for 8 months now, shown above. It's setup in single-ended mode (SE inputs and outputs) and at unity gain with three switched inputs and a loop out off of the third input. Twisted Pear agreed to let me raffle it off (it was sent to me as a review sample kit) and I'm donating all of the remaining parts (chassis, knobs, wire, power cord, etc) along with the final shipping costs to send it to the winner. The amp is cap-coupled (not a part of the original design) because I wasn't comfortable with the amount the outputs tended to drift. It never went above 20mV but I wanted whomever ends up with this to be able to use it worry free and not have to make adjustments. It also doesn't have a perfectly black background, chalk up another amp that isn't particularly fond of being in the same chassis as an Avel trafo. I've dialed it down to the point where you really have to be listening for it in a silent room. Otherwise it sounds pretty darn good to my ears. The parts cost for this is probably in the $300 range, give or take, with about $150 of that coming out of my pocket. How's the raffle work? Tickets are $10, you may purchase as many as you like. To purchase tickets you simply send me a PM with the desired quantity and I'll respond with my paypal ID and your ticket #'s. At the close of the raffle I'll run a random # generator and inform the winner. I'm hoping that everyone feels comfortable sending the money as a gift so that we don't lose 3% off the top. The raffle will run for one week (+/-) depending on how things go. I'm going to list it at HF and hopefully I can raise some serious dough. What happens to the $$ My plan is simple. Zach's family has no idea I'm doing this and I have no intention of telling them until it's over and I have the $$. At that time I'll take Zach's dad (Kristopher) out for a beer and give him the $$ and explain how the donation came to be. I'll take a picture and post it. I hope I'm trustworthy enough that this isn't cause for alarm. 100% of the raffle $$ will go to Zach's family. So that's it, I hope to have lots of PM's to sift through over the next week and would like to say thanks in advance. Your humble circular-hole-cutter tech. Nate
  2. Lily says, "Go Wonder Woman!"
  3. Happy Birthday Stretch, the New England travel team ain't the same without you.
  4. FYI - my team name is now "Sitting Duck" after Lily's favorite book. As much as I dislike ALO, the name needed to go.
  5. Happy Birthday!
  6. Here's a hint, if you have to start a post this way you probably already know that you're in trouble. Serious question - why would you care? You're asking about fake headphones, are you shitting me?
  7. Stranger things have happened Vicki. Shelly, I'd be happy to offer up David Garrard in a trade. He logged a reasonable 25 points today on my bench.
  8. No Froyo update for the X yet but it's pretty snappy without it, can't imagine what it'd be like given the performance gains seen on other devices. As far as cases for the X go, it's already so big that I didn't want to add any bulk so I simply use a screen protector on it. And Todd, I'm with you. I can't wait to see Android based tablets come to market.
  9. I limit myself to two cups a day, occasionally I get the chance to swing by my favorite Turkish cafe and get a cafe mocha, which I will now make sure happens tomorrow. I don't know why but I pretty much quit soda about 10 years ago and now have one a week, on average. I don't miss it at all.
  10. Shit Al, that doesn't sound like fun. Next time call, I travel light.
  11. Are they a lovely bunch?
  12. Don't let the door hit you...
  13. He's been reduced to one post, if he fails to improve on that one remaining piece of rubbish I think we've done all we can for him.
  14. Woke up, made pancakes. Played with Lily outside for a while, then did some minor grocery shopping and a little bit of amp building. Took a bike ride this afternoon that felt moderately good and then played with Lily some more. Time to start cooking dinner.
  15. Your title says unregulated, the text says regulated, to my untrained eye the schematic appears to show an unregulated supply but I wouldn't swear to it.
  16. Lily's donation is in!
  17. Kevin can wait to supply other answers until he's allowed to post here again.

  19. I have the small Makita, it's been great although if you have any desire to run tools it won't do it well. I would add that it didn't come with any accessories of any kind, I picked up a cheap pack from Lowes that had everything I needed and I haven't bought anything else in the 3+ years I've owned it.
  20. I wouldn't want anything with a capacitive touch display for use at the gym and I really don't like the lack of lock function so that you can't inadvertently bump the sleep/wake button.
  21. Anodizing is likely to be a $100+ expense unless you can piggyback on a much larger order. I'd give some thought to trying to find a local powder coat shop and see what they'd charge. I think that'd made a sweet finish for a top panel like that. Otherwise break out the rattle can and be sure to use an appropriate primer/etcher for the aluminum.
  22. So many snarky comments, so little time. No way to play external media makes the aTV worthless to me. Great, you made it super small and sleek and missed the boat on, you know, about half of what a media device should be. I know, I know, buy a mac mini too, eff that, my PS3 does just fine thanks and can still handle the occasional spinning disc.
  23. I think that Mike would have eventually found that out.
  24. Oh man, color me jealous. I miss my S4, despite it being a huge pain in the ass and have often thought about aa newer, better example.
  25. Good lord, Frank, that's just beautiful.
