When in doubt, pirates are cool.

I believe it's pronounced the same as that stuff you breathe.

I've been pronouncing it the same as ire in my head.

I've heard Steve Silberman (who works there) say it as "air," so there ya go.

Being dead, kai doesn't require ayre.

There's a used QB-9 up on audiogon, if anyone is interested...

We have a thread for that....

no access to that forum, you can remove my post

I just took mine into Norman Audio in Singapore for for the hi rez 192 upgrade. Has anyone else done this?

damn, this has an upgrade? Did they tell you parts they change exactly?

With your stax headphones, does it sound too analytical/bland compared with your other dacs?

A new chip and firmware I think. It was just offered to me, and is brand new. I would check with your dealer. It will handle 192 such as RR HRX recordings.

Interesting. I wonder if there is any benefit beyond 192 support? If not, I probably won't upgrade for the time being. The 96/192 offerings currently out there are slim, especially in terms of older recordings.

Necro bumb. :) I've been thinking about picking up one of these for a while now but 230V units are pretty thin on the ground. Does anybody know if the transformer has split primaries so I could just modify a 115V unit?

Hey Birgir. I emailed Ayre about that when we moved to 230V territory and they told me to forget it. Whether that means it can't be done, or whether they just didn't want me diddling with it, I don't know.

Most manufacturers would never allow the end user to mess with this but I do wonder if it is possible to do so. The pics I've seen just show two wires going to the IEC socket but they could be hiding two more somewhere.

Will do. If you see a 230V unit let me know. I'll also have to ask Ayre and see if I can buy one directly from them since there is nobody here who represents them.

This is the best shot I've got.

And it doesn't help at all. :-[

Tell me what you need to see and I'll go find the right Allen key.

I need to see how many wires enter the transformer on the left side of that picture, between it and the display. A picture of the side of the transformer (which faces the PCB's) would also be nice since that's where the specs are printed. If this is a stock unit then I could just buy another one and swap it out.

Are you thinking about making this your main source?
