September 29, 201114 yr Glad this thing finally started shipping. For $50 more than the Dell (which features the same panel) I think it's competitively priced. It adds laptop charging, thunderbolt, speakers, an isight camera, and an aluminum body. I'd have a hard time purchasing the thunderbolt display over a 27" iMac (which can be used in target disk mode), but for $700 extra I can see how others might not agree.
September 29, 201114 yr I thought the standalone Google Chat development (on any platform) was discontinued years ago? Anyway, wouldn't the easiest solution just be to sign into gmail and turn on chat? Lol, I didn't know you could chat from within mail. Duh. I still hate gmail, though.
September 29, 201114 yr http://store.apple.com/us_epp_124689/product/FC510LL/A?mco=MTkwMzU2NDg iMac 27" refurb for $1269. $340 more than the tbolt display...same display panel, but it's also a 3.2ghz imac...
September 29, 201114 yr Dinny, I advise you to buy the big iMac with a side of MBA. This. Man up Dinny.
September 29, 201114 yr I cannot figure out why I need the new display, but damn I want one to connect my MBA to!
September 29, 201114 yr I cannot figure out why I need the new display, but damn I want one to connect my MBA to! Because it's BIGGER!
September 30, 201114 yr I cannot figure out why I need the new display, but damn I want one to connect my MBA to! X2. Now stop, your are giving me bad thoughts...........................
September 30, 201114 yr two displays are better than one, so you should get the 27" iMac and a 27" display. and a MBA. maybe two MBAs, in case the need for two ever arrises. Posted by the man with a gazillion chef knives that all do the samething................CUT STUFF. Question--- are you registered with Cutco for your wedding gifts? Edited September 30, 201114 yr by Augsburger
September 30, 201114 yr Well as an interim step up why not connect a 1080 HDMI TV to the MBP? Thirty two inchers gor for < $400, is the MBP graphics card the bottleneck here?
September 30, 201114 yr now that MBAs have i5 and i7 CPUs, This thread is better if you don't know what an MBA is, and assume it has something to do with business school. I'd get a Thinkpad X1.
September 30, 201114 yr I ended up getting a 17" MBP, purely because the iMac wont work properly with 3rd party SSD drives (and my needs are different), but I will add to the chorus of 27" iMac + Air. I'll probably get a TB screen once the TB cases come down to more sane prices, as I want to piss off the 5 drive cases sitting on my desk into one box.
September 30, 201114 yr What's the problem with the iMac and SSD drives? (My old iMac is working fine with one.)
September 30, 201114 yr Wow. How can they do that? Is it a firmware thing? Also sounds pretty damn anti-competitive to me, but what do I know?
September 30, 201114 yr Wow. How can they do that? Is it a firmware thing? Also sounds pretty damn anti-competitive to me, but what do I know? Anti-competitive like their many lawsuits in attempts to ban Samsung tablet and phone galaxy products in the US, Japan, Europe, and Australia?
September 30, 201114 yr Macsales/Other World Computing (good Mac-oriented upgrades vendor) says they've got the 3rd-party SSD problem licked, at least for certain brands of controllers. http://blog.macsales...id-state-drives http://blog.macsales.com/11734-mac-compatible-sandforce-updater-now-available http://blog.macsales...owc-ssd-updater I've bought from them in the past and their goods and advice have been reliable, though I haven't used any of their SSD products.
September 30, 201114 yr Anti-competitive like their many lawsuits in attempts to ban Samsung tablet and phone galaxy products in the US, Japan, Europe, and Australia? You've seen just how much samsung has done to clone apple everywhere, right? At some point, they have to protect their work.
September 30, 201114 yr I'm really just talking about the anti-competitive behavior of a possible tying arrangement.
September 30, 201114 yr I do agree it's pretty weak they don't let you use any drive in the imac, but maybe there are a lot of genius bar issues based on people replacing their hard drives on their own
September 30, 201114 yr Hah. That Apple/Samsung graphic has been in my Slow Forum "to post" folder for ages now.
September 30, 201114 yr Haha, nice pic. I see their point. Just wait until all of the "Ultra books" come out that Intel are funding. Apple is definitely leading technology in design. I hope it bites Samsung in the ass, I hate their one button phones.
