May 27, 20251 yr Thankful by Natalie Cole (1977) https://album.link/wmxqjwcnt0mcj Example: I didn't know this part of her career. I found her in the late 80s and listened to the late 90s. I have missed a lot. Amazing release in the middle of disco area that is so full of soul and great production.

This will be in rotation for a bit.
May 29, 20251 yr Supertramp, Live in Paris '79 -- great gig, all their top songs, zero filler, very great. I was reminded how the second half of "Child of Vision" is just one long -- stonkin' -- piano solo, very much like The The's "Uncertain Smile". Compare:
May 29, 20251 yr Author I don't really remember the details of the show, but I took a girl to see her favorite band REO Speedwagon in late 1979 even though I wouldn't have been caught dead there otherwise. I do recall it was a good show, and I also recall I didn't get even a proper kiss for my efforts.
May 29, 20251 yr 50yo Nils Lofgren by Nils Lofgren Band (1975) https://album.link/tfvx4chsvnb0g Example: Some good playing, the songs are okay to me.
May 29, 20251 yr Search For The New Land by Lee Morgan (1966) https://album.link/qkcjcfrch3whp Example: Opening with this 16 minute monster, Lee had something to say in '66. With Wayne, Herbie and the boys, just a stellar set. {RVG of course}
May 29, 20251 yr Zim Ngqawana - Zimphonic Suites It's in Qobuz and other sites New to me artist who came recommended at another website. Kind of fun jazz, pretty straight ahead with African influence.
June 1, 20251 yr Sonny Meets Hawk! by Sonny Rollins (1963) https://album.link/s94wfwvvrgh6z Example: Sonny, Hawk. Hawk, Sonny. Nice to meet you. Good colab. They play with themes and sounds back and forth the entire album. With some experimental things going on as well.
June 2, 20251 yr Shostakovich: The Piano Concertos; Solo Works by Yuja Wang (2025) https://album.link/cw0v6b3mzztxf Example: Up to all the standards that one would expect.
June 2, 20251 yr Copland: Our Town Suite, The Red Pony Suite & El Salón México by Aaron Copland (1988) https://album.link/kjqzqbb7js4mt Example: Finally getting back to finish off the trio of CBS Masterworks: Copland v Copland... Like the others, just lovely, maybe not the most audiophile of the recordings out there, but super lush and the performance is unquestionably good. I may poke around a little bit more for other recordings, I have a few others in my queue (Bernstein, MTT, Marriner), but I feel that in the future, I will probably just come back to these.
June 2, 20251 yr Funny, I just came here to post what I listened to yesterday. The sound quality is pristine. I've always been a fan of HDCD, especiallly in Reference Recording's hands. YMMV, but I very much enjoy the performance as well. I've had this disc for years.
June 4, 20251 yr 50yo Wind On The Water by Crosby & Nash (1975) https://album.link/5vnkkwtcmj2vj Example: There were a couple albums of just the duo. Nice set of tunes.
June 5, 20251 yr Shazam by The Move (1970) https://album.link/gwvsqbsvnzrxh Example: The short lived but fun 'The Move'.
June 5, 20251 yr https://youtu.be/o4qbnQAsC-8?si=eobRwZGPAQeQF-40 "The link could not be embedded because youtu.be does not allow embedding of that video." Anyway - Hania Rani - Nancy Jazz Pulsations 2023 - ARTE concert Just posted a few days ago of the 2023 performance. Worthy as always.
June 7, 20251 yr Personal History by Mary Chapin Carpenter (2025) https://album.link/gtnmzvcxr3szp Example: Warm and sometimes brooding. A set of tunes from one that seems to know who they are and where they are in their life.

But it is not for the faint of heart. There are a lot of notes, and they are not in the order that I would expect. But listening deeply there are themes and phrases that emerge that are very rewarding. And some tunes that are absolutely beautiful. Well recorded and minimizes the Jarrett mumble. Side note - last week when I had a friend visiting, I tried to explain - The Köln Concert - It was hard with someone that does not listen to jazz and had never heard of it before.
June 9, 20251 yr Martha Argerich plays Beethoven - Conductor Ion Marin - ARTE Concert full of goodness.
June 9, 20251 yr The band split up in 2002, got back together 24 years later and made this album. Low expectations on that and pop isn't exactly my favorite genre. I'd say they not only produced a good album but hit it out of the ballpark good. Or at least a triple. ex.
