Probably a question asked many times, but I'll ask it again. My HD650 is toast. I need a new pair of dynamics. And I'm far too profligate for $350 phones. What has a decent chance of being released that doesn't sound like ass (even if you owned it, useless meet impressions notwithstanding)?

My current stock of headphones, in order of preference, is Darth Beyers V2/K501, K24P, PX100, KSC75, UR/40 The stock DBs were just the end-all for me for a while, but I'd been lying to myself; they were compared to HD280s and KSC75s. I figured I could use some "opposite" headphones so grabbed some used K501s, and was really impressed at everything they did besides bass. The stock DBs were definitely way too bass heavy and the highs just... not there. I tried the gel pads and they made them more tolerable (bass tamer, more highs/mids), but something's still weird about it. Starting up the K340 modding thread so anyone that has modded them could offer advice, impressions on how they sound, etc can do so. I'm looking to recable one of my pairs to a 4 pin male XLR, replace the elastics, replace the grill with some other fabric and replace the earpads with velour ones.

Anyone balance their Edition 9s and if so any comments on the change from SE? My balanced experience is pretty limited to the Senn line where there is a decent change.

So I'm pretty close to graduation and I haven't really bought myself anything nice since February. I was initially going to get a very nice watch, but the last few weeks I've really been considering the L3000. It doesn't help that I didn't like them at the last Boston meet, but I'd like to give them another shot. Basically I'd like a more bassy, fun alternative to my two main headphones. I see the K1000s deficiency with rock music now that I have the HP-2. The HP-2 doesn't exaggerate bass, so it's great for those pristine recordings, but not so great for the poorly done stuff (where basslines/dynamics are buried). From browsing the boards it seems that most of the people here are very serious about their gear and are often using it professionally, but I was hoping to get advice on a more day to day use headphone for a moderate user. I'm basically looking for a headphone under $200 that is comfortable, light (doesn't apply too much pressure and doesn't feel heavy on the neck), and easy to wear for extended periods of time. hi I spent to years creating this baby but if I were to apply my old rule of "what to keep" in an audio rig then the whole headphone side would have to go. here is the rule: if a certain component gets less than 10 percent of playing time, then It is not worth keeping, no matter how good a deal it was or how much it is worth. I currently have two R10's which sound a bit different from each other. I'm trying to decide which one to send to SinglePower for a balanced recable. Mikhail told me he has recabled several R10's before, while I've never read about any other companies who have done so. Actually, there isn't much info about balanced R10's at all. I intend to keep one stock so I can compare it with the balanced recabled one. One has less bass but a better midrange and larger soundstage. Which one should be recabled, the one with less bass or the one with more bass? No poll option, or am I stupid again?

I got my cans and my amp back yesterday. The ps-1's are recabled with a custom beryillium copper alloy cable, and the rs-1's are recabled with a moon audio black dragon. The amps 1/4" neutrik was replaced with a 4-pin xlr and some of the wiring was redone. My initial impressions are that the sound is more open and 3d. The bass has become bloated, and the overall sound is less refined. I prefer the ps-1's over the rs-1's currently because of their added refinement and better sound stage, but the rs-1 midrange does have its moments. Biggie.

Okay, so here's the deal: My father has agreed to pay for headphones for me if I find ones I deem suitable. I'm looking for a minimum frequency response of 5 - 35K Hz, Closed, preferably circum-aural. At the moment the only ones that I've come across that look any good are Audio-Technica ATH-A1000, Audio-Technica ATH-A900, and Sony MDRD777SL ... I know that the Beyer DT770's sound good, but my ex who I'm friends with has those and it would be copying, and in the spirit of competition I'd like to see if I can do better than those... I never really was into the wireless Dolby headphones thing. However I find myself wanting something like that for late-night TV watching. (and apparently on the rare occasion that I do follow a series, my program choices are 'so gay'.) What's worth buying these days?
