Back in the '90s, my favourite hi-fi store was selling high-end gear made by a small Australian company, named after its founder, Kostas Metaxas. At the time it was impressively better than famous brand names (in Australia at least) for what they were asking. They certainly were pretty hard-core about their designs, for example: Anyway, aside from that, I found they had put up some recording samples they'd made of jazz and classical, which, apart from a considerably amount of background hiss, are pretty good. Metaxas Audio Systems Hope you all enjoy them.

  5. Just a reminder for those yourmusic members for whom the price increase didn't take effect on the first of the year: today is the last day to place an order at the $5.99 per cd price. I just got through wading through the entire rock/pop section A-Z, and have got myself a mighty full cart of music. And I haven't even thought about which Miles Davis boxed sets to get yet.

I've never been able to get last.fm to work with foobar when using ASIO4All. Basically last.fm starts up when foobar does, but I get an an error message similar to when another program has been opened before foobar. I'm sure the answer is simple, but google provides no solution. Computer as source folks, help me out?

I've never listened to any solo Lennon, aside from of course the single "Imagine". I am hoping to explore his music further, and am looking into picking up Plastic Ono, Mind Games, and Imagine. There is much debate over at SH forums as to whether the MFSL Gold CD versions are acceptable, since they are remixes. An eBay seller (CD LTD) has tons of copies of all three for around $25 apiece shipped. Feelings on remixes aside, I was wondering how folks here felt about the sound/sonics of the MFSL versions of the above three albums. If not the MFSLs, I'll probably hunt down some inexpensive vinyl versions. Or the new MFSL vinyls, but I heard new MFSL vinyl is noisy.

Found this on the other site here. I used it to nab some Scottish Chamber Orchestra Beethoven. Just under $20 for a 24/96 studio master isn't bad I reckon. TW622P94 Linn Records - specialists in Classical, Jazz and Celtic music

OK found the site livephish.com for phish experts out there, any here that are standouts for me to start with? eg, any from the Live Phish I-XX series worthwhile? I may start with the one where they cover Quadrophenia. There's just too much here to wade through. Also I much prefer the live albums, but any must-own studio albums?

Following up from Reks' cool trombone-music thread, I thought I would throw out a request for more jazz titles led by or featuring baritone sax. I came across a random but cool website, http://www.jazzbarisax.com/ that has some great leads and such, but this crowd has some good musical taste and knowledge. Here are a couple of my own favorites to start off: Serge Chaloff: Gerry Mulligan: James Carter featured with the Ginger Baker DJQ2O (Denver Jazz Quintet to Octet): That last disc is a favorite in general and James Carter wails on the first track, Cyril Davis, and three other cuts as well. So, whadya got?

I thought this was a nice piece by NPR. http://www.npr.org/blogs/allsongs/2014/02/21/280715487/the-good-listener-for-bands-and-fans-the-no-fault-divorce?utm_content=socialflow&utm_campaign=nprfacebook&utm_source=npr&utm_medium=facebook The Neil Young example is actually a good one, but he still produces some good work every now and then, it's just not anything that even resembles his top form work. Johnny Cash and Dylan are exceptions in the sense that they both did (and Dylan still does) some of their best work in the later stages of their careers. But as far as adding purchased music to my collection, I'm just happy that there are so many ways…

  19. Started by Dusty Chalk,

So has anyone been following the Mahler thread on Head-Fi -- someone want to synopsize? I want to get a decent Mahler boxset, such as the Klaus Tennstedt from EMI Classics or something. I realize people prefer individual symphonies, but is there any mention of a decent complete symphonies cycle? Or does someone have their own opinion that they would want to share with me? Performance is more important than fidelity, but if it's too bad, let me know -- I don't want any of these 2kHz bandwidth historical recordings.

The Tape Project, wherein they make dubs off the original master tapes with custom built gear and you get albums on 15ips 1/4" half track stereo tape. Reel to reel tape, as close to the master tape as you'll ever get without owning the actual master tape. The catalog is pretty limited, unfortunately.
