The chart colors are a little iffy, but if you squint the conclusions are pretty clear. File sharing hurts record labels and benefits artists. Not only are artists now making much more money from live performances, but their total share of the music industry pie is growing as the labels' share declines.

Just got an email from Mosaic Records and they mentioned the Jazz Record Collectors’ Bash next weekend. Thought those around New Jersey may be interested. Make sure to watch "Ghost World" beforehand.

Who's going to support their local record store on "Record Store Day"? http://www.recordstoreday.com/Home It looks like there will be a lot of new releases and exclusives sold on Record Store Day (RSD). And some stores will have quite a few special events. Amoeba in Hollywood is giving away 250 wristbands to see Smashing Pumpkins perform on RSD if you preorder their boxset. Slash will be signing his new album. Salzer's in Ventura will be having some bands play and Coheed & Cambria will be doing a signing. Looks like quite a bit of good fun.

If you guys haven't heard, RR is getting back into releasing lp's. Paul Stubblebine and Prof Johnson have been toiling away behind the scenes to put this together for a couple of years now and the first 2 releases will be next month (Sept 2011). Here's the press release; TWO NEW RELEASES September 2, 2011 SAN FRANCISCO – For many years, RR has been searching the world over for the best possible vinyl mastering, plating and pressing facilities so we could re-enter the LP market. We now have a production chain that will allow us to produce LPs to meet our high standards and satisfy our demanding customers, who have been waiting for these LPs for a long time! Assembli…

Seeing BlessingX's post over on the ",..listening to" of "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts" reminded me that I meant to post a link to the Byrne/Eno site where you can download the multitrack session for a couple of the cuts from that album (which I just plain wore out when it was first released). So, if you have a DAW/Editing software with multitrack capabilities, check it out. It's too much fun to play around with the tracks and create your own mix of "Help Me Someone" or "My Secret Life". Once you've downloaded all 24 tracks of "Help Me,.." , try de-constructing it by soloing (to hear the single track alone) then muting that track. Another fun thing, I kinda like to s…

Have any of you discovered Pandora yet? http://www.pandora.com/ Pretty cool way of being introduced to new music -- I have several "stations" set up already (Ambient Electronica, Organica, Eccentrica, eMetal, and Electro Industrial). If you are on, and/or you don't mind me giving them your email address (I.E. if you are going to sign on anyway), then let me know (PM me your E), and I'll "share" them with you. And apparently, there's some sort of sharing of information going on with the Slimdevices Squeezebox, so if you have one of these, you can listen anywhere and all of the other functionality (and you will want to be able to rate and skip songs, &c.), not…

The disquiet over Last.fm's founders making for the door added to the mess at eMusic makes this a crappy couple of weeks for online music services. (Although HDTracks advertising the Plant/Krause album in 24/96 would count as a piece piece of good news.) Anyway, for those who haven't heard, eMusic signed a deal with Sony for all or most of the more-than-three-year-old content in Sony's library. That pissed off their die hard "indie" customers. At the same time they announced a price hike that amounts to just a hair under or over 100% for their oldest and most loyal customers. If that wasn't enough, their communications were a PR train wreck, and if anybody had misse…

Thought I would start this up here as there are a nice series of threads on the SH forum called "listening to on vinyl" where people post pics of the album art/label/vinyl. And people are taking pics in the "drinking now" thread, so what the hell.... I don't expect this thread to get much action, but maybe it will Horace Silver Quintet - 6 Pieces of Silver (Music Matters 2LP, 45 rpm)

Damn, I had missed this (April 15, 2013). In my opinion, the best trumpet player to ever live. A huge musical influence on me even though I was a percussionist/timpanist (my twin brother was a very good trumpet player, with the Northbrook Sym. for a number of years). I met him probably around 1980 or so when he was guest artist with the regional symphony orchestra I played with when I was in school. Since my brother was 2nd trumpet in the orchestra, I was also invited to the reception/party afterwards hosted by the brass faculty. He indelibly impressed me with his graciousness and humility. I can't remember what he played, maybe the Hummel, but when I congratulate…

I searched the forum and did not find such a thread, so inspired by this thread I would like to ask head-casers this: how big is your physical music collection? By physical I mean CDs, LPs, SACDs, R2R, music DVDs and etc, basically any original media. Let's keep any CD-Rs and digital files out of this I have nothing against digital stuff and copies, it's is cool, but I would like to know what original goodies you got stored in your bookcases, boxes and basements I have about 1500 CDs, 200 LPs plus some music DVDs, and god does this stuff take up a lot of living space.

Wow looks like a cool line-up this year: http://www.bluegrass.com/telluride/lineup.html I'm probably not going unless Alison Krauss & Union Station show up again, but since they have a new album coming out in April, my guess is that they might be there. Anyone think they might travel out for this?

Paul Motian passed away a week ago and Fresh Air had a nice tribute/older interview that hit upon Bill Evans, Monk, and Keith Jarrett. Worth a listen. "I'm not a showpiece drummer. ... I feel like I'm an accompanist. It's my sort of thing to make the other people sound good, as good as they can be. I feel like I should accompany them, and I should accompany the sound that I am hearing and make it the best that I can — that I can do."

  23. Anyone here try any of the Mosaic jazz collections instead of getting all the discs from Amazon? I'm wondering if these are better masters than the standard discs, or just a prettier face. Most of them I've looked at are remastered from the original master tapes, often at 20 bit. http://www.mosaicrecords.com/prodinfo.asp?number=197-A-MD-CD I usually just buy all the albums of an artist, so I dont know what to make of these yet.
