  1. Went out last night for my mother-in-law's 86th birthday. One of my wife's sisters and her family were there, the other couldn't make it. My mother-in-law looks pretty damn good for 86!

  5. I like the looks of that! A bit busy. But it looks a lot better than the crappy foam bass traps I've got set up. Using box frames to add a bit of knobbliness to the wall seems like a good idea too. I am a big advocate of room treatments where possible. I guess this system places the "dead" end of the room on the speaker side. I've got my "dead" side of the room at the listening position side. Having said all that, what real effect is there when the majority of the sound is likely being handled by what looks like a single 3" driver? Maybe those 10" on the sides of the speakers are crossed at around 100hz? Unless the perspective is really strange, those front-facing drivers look like something out of a mini-monitor... I do have a good bit of artwork up on the largest wall surface. I don't know what difference it makes as I am not using anything as extreme as this guys box frames (which may well include damping material inside).

  6. MIL looks amazingly good, Todd. Don't bring her to happy hour in SO FL bars - she would be overrun with overage hipsters with ponytails and claims they were at Woodstock. Nice you were there for her.

  10. Thanks Dusty! Good info. Those KEFs are high priced! $30K... Crossed at 350hz and 2.3K so maybe those drivers are not doing too much work. 91db at 4ohms with 3.2ohm minimum. Very different from my current philosophy. I wonder how people end up with different philosophies when it comes to systems. Something like this is so much different from the Magico just one post above it. Of course the price is a lot different. But there are plenty of half million dollar cone systems that are similar in philosophy to the KEFs. The burlap square things are ATS damping panels. They are standard fiberglass sound absorbing material in a wood frame covered in coffee sacks. I have four of those two X two panels in the room. I am seriously considering getting into diffusion, but I like the sound now, so I don't really care that much.

  11. Went for a fairly leisurely 58 miles today as part of the Armed Forces Cycling Challenge. http://app.strava.com/activities/151050952 Was acting as a domestique/rabbit for a friend of mine for the majority of it other than the last lap. One of these years I'm going to ride this for myself and stick with one of the peletons so I can actually get a gold metal rather than silver.

  13. I dunno, I think we're all being a little hard on HPA. I'm sure he can distinguish Stevie Wonder's black people gel from his own white people gel, because black people have a certain black people smell to them, Stevie in particular. BTW, I have a pair of old 1970's vintage phones that I bought off eBay for $1,000 that was worn by the infamous murderer Jheri Curl on the night Cookie-Head got killed. I know it was his, because it smells strongly of jheri curl activator. And the negroes of that era wore a lot of activator. I can prove it here: http://youtu.be/65ltaw4SF38 Also, I have a pair of headphones that Woody Allen wore on the set of Manhattan. I know it was his, because it smells like that stuff Jewish people wear to keep their yarmulkes on their heads. It's pretty distinct, it's strong, and, having grown up in a Jewish neighborhood, and having a lot of Jewish friends (thus proving I'm not Anti-semitic), I know that odor anywhere. You may ask how I know it wasn't just any Jewish person, but I'm pretty sure there's a bit of black people smell, too, and Woody used to show up in New York jazz clubs to play jazz clarinet, and there are a lot of black people at jazz clubs. How many headphones smell of both Jewish AND black people? (*Disclaimer - the jazz shot captured here does not show actual black people in it. However, it is a fact that black people love jazz, so that's proof enough*) And finally, the best vintage headphones in my collection. A pair that Bruce Lee wore on the set of Entering the Dragon, the best martial arts movie ever made. You may ask how I know that it's Bruce Lee's. Well, it smells like egg rolls. And, being Chinese, I KNOW the smell that Chinese people who have used that Chinese oil to fry egg rolls in. It's very distinct, I grew up with it in my house, and my whole damn family smells like it. I can smell a Chinese person walking towards me from a mile away. It's not BAD mind you, it's very familiar, and it reminds me of warm feelings, growing up in my happy, fuzzy Chinese household eating egg rolls all the time. My non-racist friends used to comment on my egg roll smell all the time. It never bothered me at all, it made me feel good, because when I cried, they would always say to quit being so sensitive, they're my friend, after all! We would then fight, them trying to hit me, and me dodging them in a variety of incredible kung fu moves, even though I never took kung fu lessons, and the words emanating from my mouth oddly not matching my mouth movements. I can let all of these classic, celebrity-verified cans go for a very reasonable price. They'll be on e-Bay under the tag 'celebrity verified by racial stereotype headphones'. 10% discount for all HC members.

  15. And you didn't read my post as it was intended by me, but rather you will always see me through your rose colored glasses. I've already answered your questions. I don't even know why I respond, because you will just scour through my post and pick out something to misinterpret and use against me. I also posted in the for sale forum before before I knew that the shit hit the fan here, because the people in the "other thread" told me that only a few people read that thread and that those who did read were not interested. I picked here first because you guys are usually the best people to deal with when selling and buying. And, Tyler and I hung out several times over the years when he lived in Colorado, and we've shared gear and bought and sold with each other before (I still have the turntable he sold me), so it's nothing new to talk about those things with him.

  16. They're KEF Blades, I think those are uni-q drivers (coaxial). I like the mixed media -- I would think things like burlap and canvas would have different flavors of sound absorption. Very cool idea.

  19. We watched that episode (and two others) last night. That Copernicus bit almost knocked me off the couch. The people doing this show are as good as the ones who did 'Deadwood'. Fucking brilliant writing.

  20. ^ Ain't that the truth! Nice move Al Me: a week ago, took Tuesday off and played golf with a good friend at a nice course. We wound up getting 36 holes in with an 11:00 am start, beat the storms home that night (for the most part). Had some good beers on the course (some brought with); Revolution A Little Crazy and some Two Brothers Sidekick. Had a great time.

  22. Up at the campground and the golf cart ran out of gas, battery dead on the car and then low pressure in one of the car tires. On the way to the local farmers market I realize today is Karyl's birthday and I hadn't done any thing. Local jeweler sells his own creations so I take her there and amazingly enough she found something she liked. From goat to hero and she thinks I had this planned all along. I'm not going out of my way to convince her otherwise.

  28. picked this up after seeing it in this thread. i love this genre, magical realism i think its called. stuff like jonathan strange and mr. norrel. I enjoyed the Golem and the Jinni. Started out super strong and engaging, the middle wasn't read until you pass out good but it kept me interested. A promising debut to be sure. Looking forward to whatever Wecker comes up with next. I find it so hard these days to find a good book. I feel like I've read all the good fantasy, so much of it is garbage, and I can be particular about my sci fi. I probably need a good cop/detective book to cleanse my pallette.
