  1. Now that my PC has been taken off life support by upgrading to 16 gigs of ram and a 1060, I can play so many more games without causing another chernobyl in my bedroom.

  2. Went for my first scooter ride since the accident. I can operate the Left brake and the turn signals just fine, and it sure feels good to ride in the open wind again.

  3. Yeah, not bloody likely. Sorry. Most of us that've tried the utopias thought they were really good, so our listening experience is already sufficiently different from yours that I wouldn't know how to cross the gap. Might I suggest either trying to read some past threads on headphones and amps first, for two reasons. One, your questions and your upcoming questions might've already been answered, but also to get a taste of how we treat newcomers who ask such questions -- it's not always good. ...or might I suggest InnerFidelity if you want information, or subpar super best audio friends if you want conversation and to be handheld to your answer?

  4. Today I learned that if you overclock your GPU your Power Supply can decide to just quit and give you the gift of a nice hard shutdown.... I will need to rectify this ASAP

  16. Helpful as always Dan. For the $20 I'll stick with the 750 vs 650 though it's probably overkill. I really wasn't aware that the PSU would just thermal out and shut down with no warning, it's scary to think of bricking a machine for $20

  18. As I understand it the OC was stable with GPU temps and everything else stable but after about 30 minutes the power supply just switched off, and did so again after booting at which point I took the OC off. I found a thread where someone blamed their failing power supply for that behavior but in my case I calculated the power usage and I only have about 20w headroom on my 500W supply after I upgraded my ram to 32GB. The OC pushed me into the 550W range so it all makes sense. I went with a 750W PSU to replace it figuring headroom is good or should I just get a 650?

  20. Unrelated, my favorite gaming commentators / channel has begun an LP of my favorite game, that had always been avoided because it was the emergency behind glass LP. With one member leaving and another on hiatus, the glass has been broken, and the super best friends have begun playing Dark Souls 1:

  23. Maybe it's not the western 2016, but the Chinese year of the monkey, which ends Jan 28th. Or maybe the Chinaman's not the issue here, dude. Also, Dude, Chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian American, please.

  24. Here's the Bell Telephone data sheet I found dated 1950: http://www.mif.pg.gda.pl/homepages/frank/sheets/084/3/300B.pdf. It says 400 volts max DC, but also shows the current-voltage curves going out to almost 700 volts. And they were designed as power output tubes to drive transformers, so I would expect them to swing AC peaks up to almost twice B+. With either resistors or current loads you would have to dissipate as much power in them as in the tubes, and with a 300B running at a typical dissipation of 20 watts (55% of max, a good conservative operating condition) that means 80 watts in the resistors or current sources - similar to a DIY T2, but with much less voltage swing. I would think even output resistors would probably need significant heatsinking.

  25. I believe Kevin tested some 300B's at Stax voltages and they were really, really unhappy. Fang naturally claims they are some special snowflake tubes but who in their right mind would believe that? They are most likely the bone stock Psvane garbage rebranded. This is a 400V tube max and since it is a DHT, there are some major issues to contend with. The earliest datasheet I found is this one and it states it is a 450V max tube but the later ones all state 400V. That means the tubes probably weren't happy at 450V. I'd be interested to see the 700V one though I'm sure it is a typo. The modern tubes certainly aren't built to take that level of abuse. If there are no output transformers then this is probably similar to the WES setup, hell it might even use chokes as the output load (as that should in theory boost the voltage swing but brings in a fuck-ton of issues) but simply a quad of single ended amps which all drift like mad. Now you could drive the tubes with resistor loads off a 600V supply but yeah...it will be pretty fucking bad. No heatsinks large enough to take the current of the 300B's to be seen. Ohh and I would never get in a fistfight with anybody for the sheer fear of being able to kill them with a single blow. It's not easy being a giant...

  27. I live 10 minutes drive from my shop and I ended up having to mail them a check recently. They were doing their annual bike drive for local kids and I bought 2 kids a bike. It is depressing how little time I have for anything not work or kids during daylight hours.
