Fixed a very expensive window that was installed slightly out of square. The sash would not close all the way at the bottom, letting water in when it rained. Put a shim under the middle of the bottom of the window, forcing the bottom of the window to narrow just enough to line up. Old school carpenter tricks FTW! Impressed a few. Sometimes just being around longer can make the difference, as I'm by far the oldest guy on the crew.5 points

So I just priced out the iMac Pro I would buy for work and it came out to $11,400 and change. Think I will wait a bit.2 points

Then there's the input diff amp with resistors in the tail in the eXstatA - because it's cheaper than a current source and almost as good, according to Cavilli - which was duplicated in his LL because...who needs a little more expensive and better, for a spare no expense SOTA amp for big bucks?1 point

Quoted the wrong post above. This person sounds like they know what they are doing in soldering packages like this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Black Gate caps have not been available for a decade or so. Rubycon used to make them for Jelmax; I think there is graphite powder in there. Rubycon decided that their business model, in making capacitors by the billion did not match making small numbers of boutique parts for the audio industry, and pulled the plug. Actually they pulled it twice. First time, they were persuaded to continue. That lasted a year or two, and then goodnight Vienna. So any NOS Blackgate caps out there have been sat on a shelf for at least ten years. And if they are recent, they are fakes. And dontcha just love vertically mounted resistors. I haven't seen that sort of thing since TV's in the 1970's.1 point

RIP Mayor Lee. He backed into the mayor's office when Gavin Newsom became Lt Governor, and didn't even want to run for the office when his appointment was ending. I didn't think much of Smilin' Ed at the time because he seemed like a lightweightullivan. He turned me around by his service and commitment to the City. He was also a vocal member of my daughter's C40 Cities organization that supports cities in combating climate change by increasing sustainability. He will be missed.1 point

RIP Ed Lee, the mayor of San Francisco. Died last night of a heart attack at 65 while he was out shopping for groceries. He was a civil rights lawyer before he became a career civil servant. Not everyone loved all his policies, but I think damn near the entire Bay Area thought Ed was a good guy. Very sad day.1 point

I haven't started building my board yet, but the pitch on the regulator appears to be about the same as tsop40 and some qfp packages I'm used to soldering/desoldering. I'd recommend positioning the regulator on the board and holding it in place with tweezers. Flood the area with no clean flux, then with a fine chisel tip try to tack down one corner of the regulator, then move to the opposite corner, adjust the positioning if necessary then tack that corner down. Reflux the chip and load your tip with solder then drag it accross the remaining sides of the chip until you have all contacts soldered. If you have any bridges, then reflux the chip, clean your iron and drag it across any side of the chip that has bridges. Repeat as necessary until you've cleared all shorts, reapplying flux as needed. I personally only like to use hot air for removing large packages and reworking BGA packages. I really don't think it's any good for soldering projects like these. A reflow oven would be much better for this, but my personal preference is always hand soldering if possible. EDIT: Now that I look at the regulator a little better, hot air might actually be the way to go. I didn't realize that there was actually a pad on the underside of the chip. Solder paste and hot air is probably the best bet for this one. [whisper] Ditch Hakko... buy Metcal...[/whisper]1 point

Re-reflowing a part is very hard. Sadly, I have thrown out more than a few of those same regulator packages. Once the board isn’t completely flat it’s very hard to get things rectified.0 points

RIP Pat DiNizio of The Smithereens. Way too young at 62. Always liked their stuff, might have to hunt some of it down. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk0 points
