This is immediately where my head went. Sell one of the spare DACses, the NAD, and the displaced monitors and call it even? I know, fuzzy math, but isn't that your thing, Shelly? 😈7 points

My opinion is that the 1704 is a lovely chip that is probably not going to be easily bettered, there have not been leaps forward in DAC design in the last couple of decades, and that the analog portion matters more than anything in the digital chain. I can't comment on the relative merits of the specific devices.3 points

^ That set took 3 tries. However, it appears to be up in completion. If there's any problems with any of the sets, please let me know.1 point

Esperanza Spalding and Fred Hersch - Live at the Village Vanguard It's available only at Bandcamp through June, if purchased the profits go to the Jazz Foundation of America. I never heard Esperanza singing this good.1 point

I'd say that affordable delta-sigma DACs have become way less annoying. And the advent of R2R for less-than-MSB prices at least for me make hunting for rare old multibit chips largely redundant.1 point

It’s some time since I disassembled the headphone and my memory isn’t the best, anyhow. Remove earpad fixed by double sided tape and remove the two screws now exposed. Gently remove the now loose inner ring one none ear side and all inner parts are accessible. It’s easy to detach earcup from headband, one screw only, and cable – then you have the earcup completely free. I believe it’s fairly easy to work on the headphone, but as always be careful. Personally I think Kaldas is an overall nice design. Good luck.1 point

Finally finished the installation of my AliExpress KGSSHV Carbon into a proper enclosure. I wanted to use a somewhat slim chassis so I skipped those taller ones (100mm+) and ended up with the Breeze Audio SD4309B. It's inexpensive (about $57) and has a pretty solid build. The internal space is just enough for the AliExpress/eBay Carbon PCBs, but a bit shallower than the transformers I have. I had to mill 1mm-deep 'pockets' on the bottom cover for the transformers to fit right below the top cover. I'm not a big fan of the heat spreaders so those sections of the PCB were cut off. Aluminum angles were used to build a 'cradle' for the transformers that also work as mounting brackets for the extra boards (input switching and LV power supply). I soon realized that the boards are not so DIY-friendly to work with. The Golden Reference HV PSU board is not designed for center-tapped HV winding which is more popular in surplus. The connectors are somehow placed at the convenience of the PCB routing but not so much for harness routing. Shared terminal pins means that you'll often have to stick two or more wires into the same hole, etc, etc. Not having a mirrored pair of boards seems to make things worse at some places but otherwise not a show-stopper. I was planning to make this a phase 1 project. The phase 2 will have the input switching and volume pot changed to rotary encoders driving digital pots, which will then make space for phase 3, a tube final stage piggy-backed on top of the carbon PCBs, could be BHSE or Grounded-Grid. There is enough space left, but I'm afraid I won't have the time. Just some ideas for more ambitious builders, I guess.1 point

Hmm, would love me some SCM50/100/150 actives but I am not sure I can really sneak that in the house without being asked how much they cost!!!1 point

All boards are here and I am ready to start shipping the boards to the GB participants. I'll be using USPS Priority Mail for all US participants. All US GB participants please PayPal me $8.40 for the shipping charge. For international participants I will PM you the shipping charge after I have the package weighted at the post office. I have used first class mail without insurance and tracking in the past. Please let me know ASAP if you want to add tracking and/or insurance but be warned they are quite expensive options. I'll ship the package when I received your shipping payment. When you PayPal me, PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR SHIPPING ADDRESS and HEAD CASE ID if you have not done so when you PayPal'ed me the cost for the boards.1 point

I guess it helps having more than one Speedy, so you can have one casual and one more formal: hint hint1 point

I got the Pro Vega 48 only because it was reported that it ran cooler. Maybe that's been disproven but that's the only reason I paid for it. There have been none of the thermal throttling issues reported on earlier products. This machine runs much cooler and quieter than my Mac Pro's. The fan noise was one of my main issues with my cheese grater. The only times I've heard the fan on this one has been when an app crashed and froze and when installing some apps. I'm using OWC's memory cards and they seem fine. The price on them has is almost half of what it was a year ago when I bought my 64G.1 point

Watching a couple of guys in dope spacesuits sitting on top of a tank of liquid o2 and hydrogen (I guess that's what they still use?). I have a feeling they're in for a big surprise! https://www.nasa.gov/nasalive Different stream1 point

Dec 13, 2012 uploaded. Mixcloud kind of sucks. At the end of an upload, I get "It looks like there was a problem with your connection, we're automatically trying your upload again." more often than not, meaning I had to reupload the whole damn thing.0 points

I'm very sad to say that Bob Weightman, the world's oldest man, died yesterday two months after his 112th birthday after a short battle with cancer. Peacefully in his sleep. RIP Bob. An astonishingly long life well lived.0 points
