  1. Another KGSSHV Carbon lives! Thanks to @sorenb @Kerry @simmconn for the help on bias voltage. I used 2 x 120v 0.5W and 2 x 130v 3W in the end. The 0.5w parts work well. Next steps: cable management, re-case, increase heatsink size.

  2. Is it possible that there is not a dedicated podcast thread yet? https://crooked.com/podcast-series/wind-of-change/

  3. Same here. Also a good rundown on the End of OSX over at the often excellent Stratechery... https://stratechery.com/2020/the-end-of-os-x/

  4. Thanks Kerry. I've got some thoughts on really building my own after these first two. The biggest hurdle in this build was simply assembling and mounting the crossovers, which once completed reminded me very much of my point to point wiring adventures back in the day and was quite fun. The next project should be easier (more interior space) but the long term vision is to use the CNC router to build an enclosure for some leftover drivers and tweeters that I have from a long-abandoned speaker building project and make some that I'll actually use. I will say, the little 6" sub in this thing, along with the passive radiator on the back, produces impressive results.

  5. Spent the evening trying to figure out why my mom's car died in the middle of her driving it. I managed to track it down to the fuel pump, which was so much fun to actually replace, but it got the car running again.

  7. Even if the new ones are introduced with a chipset that you don't like there will likely be closeouts, refurbs and other options that will make it possible to purchase just about whatever you want (within reason).

  10. Nice! Congratulations!! I am loving the perspex case. Though for heat dissipation, making the sides of the case heat sinks and using perspex for top, bottom, front, and back would seem better. You must have a CNC to do all of those drill holes so perfectly?

  13. Nice write up, from the amount of measurement graphs I can see how much effort you have put to it. Trimming down regions across the spectrum that you think is too much is a much more direct way to get a sound desired than trying out different gears. The 2K-3K region is particularly sensitive to our ears. To my experience, elevating it increase the glossiness of sound, adding more presence to each instrument and give people a good first impression on audition that it is a headphone with good sound quality. While lowering it make the headphone more relaxing, tolerable to long-term listening but the vocal might sounds void. I have had an earpad with inner face of the earpad cut open so that the foam is exposed to absorb this particular range. But the default one without the hole sounds closer to the original omega.

  14. Glad to see people other than myself who are quite sensitive to EQ. Like you found, manipulating EQ by as little as 2-3 dB in midrange seems to really reduce that "you are there" transparency and realness for me, to the point I will not own headphones or speakers that require this type of adjustment..
