  1. Lately I am rediscovering my CD collection of Massive Attack (and various artists related to them like Tricky, etc...)

  2. I just love Massive Attack. Paradise Circus through any headphone is an all time favorite.

  3. When Simone Biles lost the ability to orientate in 3 dimensions, I compared it to opera singers who forget how to sing (they do). They, like Biles, have to go back to basics and work through the problem. There was a shot of her in training during recent days - and trying to do a landing from the parallel bars - and landing on her face. But she worked it out enough to do a superb beam exercise, and got a probably the best bronze medal for overcoming adversity. Hats off to the woman!

  4. The problem I have with that video is how the questions are loaded. Arabic numerals is the official and colloquial name of the numbers we use. Lemaitre's theory was officially called the hypothesis of the primeval atom and colloquially known as the big bang theory. By referring to it only as his theory of creation is quite silly. Still, I bet the 'Republicans' and 'Democrats' they polled for that video are really just 'idiots' and 'idiots'.

  6. My first day back at construction work for over a year. Well, first day back at a job not run by Milo and Otis. Well, it was really only a half day, gathering materials for the project. You can't rush into these things all at once. I found it refreshing to get back to it, but Suzy has a completely different attitude about this whole back to work thing. Oh, and I got a haircut.

  7. This seems like it's perfect for Head-Case—an electrostatic headphone tuned like the HD650: https://www.audeze.com/products/crbn

  10. Shortcuts. Reminds me of the Stewart, I think, segment eons ago polling people if "heterosexuals should serve in the military"?

  14. Unlocking the frame rate was one of the first things I did, since it somehow felt way lower than 60 when it was locked. I think it took a combination of that settings file, and the launch argument for borderless (-popupwindow) to get it actually smooth at a high framerate.

  19. Wait! Does this mean Audeze finally managed to make a headphone that doesn't make violins sound like violas?! @Beefy: Re: “electrostats seem to have stood completely still, while planars and dynamics have come forward in leaps and bounds” — my observations from attending numerous (large) meets for several years before covid have been that no TOTL planar or dynamic beats my SR-007 (v2.5 I guess?) and Carbon combo. Not the Utopia, not the LCD-4, not the piece of shit Abyss, nothing Hifiman (haven't heard their $6k thing though), not the Meze Empyrean (though that thing is pure catnip for bassheads). They're nice, sure, and most have the advantage of not needing much of a specialized amp. But they're not nicer than the current-production 007 or the 1993 SR-Omega (which I don't have, alas, but have had the fortune to try once). This opinion is unpopular on other forums. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Maybe this means there's a (local?) maximum in headphone quality, and various manufacturers are slowly reaching it. @spritzer: What amps do you think the measurements are coming from?

  20. Support is also needed for the heavy magnets, adding yet more weight, explained here: https://www.audeze.com/blogs/technology-and-innovation/notes-about-weight-clamping-force-and-earpad-materials Considering the 4000$ price tag on a pair of LCD-4s, 4500$ doesn't seem to be far-fetched, considering there was probably a lot more development involved, but they might be gaining that back rather quickly. Unless they start to loose ground on their home soil, I don't foresee Stax changing their approach and while other people have made stats, they haven't gotten that big on the field itself. A new flagship will be coming eventually, but I'm not sure what they are going to do with the rest, since the SR-007 Mk2 is by far the oldest (and arguably the best) product they make. With the amps, they just don't care too much since making nearly the same thing for more money seems to be the only way to make any form of profit on it unless they start getting those parts from elsewhere. I wonder if it is actually worth it for Audeze to make a cheaper electrostat and start competing with their own products. Probably not worth the hassle and they will keep this line in this price category.

  26. the unbal to bal part of the board had a problem with the current source, this was discussed over at diyaudio on the negative current source the 10k resistor went to the emitter. it needs to go to the base. first picture is the fix, second picture was the original with the error.

  27. Since I've got the Carbon up and running for a couple of months, I'd like to bring it up to another level and have been thinking of the Circlotron for a while. I wonder if there's any interest in the board sets? These would be 2mm/3oz with latest files posted by Kevin. I could also provide Nippon-Chemicon 470uf 550v caps. I'm not using any off-the-shelf chassis though, it would be built from scratch, but I guess a standard 5U one would work fine. Probably I will do like EUVL did with his F5X chassis, with both output and driver boards stacked on both sides of a thick teflon sheet. Same thing with the single 900v PSU. These are the boards that I'm thinking of ordering. Both Driver and Output are v2, PSU is v3. The GRHV is a dual version, not singles because I plan to mount the transistors on the bottom plate. Feel free to PM me if you have any interest. This is my first time doing this so any if there is any inconvenience, please pardon me. \

  28. I tossed together a BOM for the SS Balanced Dynahi using the PZTA SMD transistors, MJE15030/15031 outputs. It is missing connectors, etc. but looking at the v1.5 gerber file (ssdynahibalsmt.zip), it matches the board (I think) SS Balanced Dynahi BOM.xlsx

  29. biasing the SuSy boards: -before first power up, the pots that flank the THAT340 should be at their mid point. the outer biasing pots should be as follows, when looking at the board with the heat sinks at the rear: L - fully CCW and R - fully CW. leave the DC servo opamp out. -bring up the bias by turning the L outer biasing pot CW and the R CCW, keeping tabs on the DC offset. both pots will increase the quiescent current bias, but also affect the amount of DC offset. i just turn them in equal amounts until i hit my target quiescent current and then tweak for lowest DC offset. the offset will fluctuate quite a bit, like 100mV. small fractions of turns on the pots will cause the off set to jump. be patient. i think the best i could do was roughly +70mV to -30mV. -insert the DC servo. measure the offset between the O(+) and O(-) - i measured 20 and 25mV. turn one of the THAT340 pots CW and the other CCW, 1/2 turn each. note if the DC offset went up or down. if it went down, then continue turning the pots in the same manner, in 1/2 turn increments, until you reach 0mV. if the offset went up, then reverse the turns in the opposite directions. -i was able to get less than 0.5mV offset and very stable. on cold start up, still a very low 2mV. zero pops or hiccups through my HPs either on power up or power down.

  30. as close as I can come with available parts. The that340 really is as good or better for noise than the k389/j109. only difference is lower input impedance, which is already low due to supersymmetry anyway.

  31. Alternatively Plus of course algebra is an Arabic term, from Al Jebr meaning to unite broken parts.
