Sorry Andy, no review or opinion from me. We have to wait for the trusted - Birgir. I just tear things down, a bad habit. P.S. I think SR-X9000 is the best headphone I’ve listened to. I haven’t listened to original Omega or HE90.4 points

Ennui is three syllables? The good news is that the beard was not lost in vain because the atmospheric river flowed right through the drains we cleaned without backup.3 points

Ha, thanks! Birgir likes dark stuff, so he'll probably say, OMG these are so bright 😜.2 points

Cutting it to the wire so for now this is going to be an ultra-cool open top dog crate. Frisco has had 3 seizures in the last 24 hours so it has been way too hard to get anything done these days. I think I need to stick to much smaller projects as I just cannot find the room to work on these large ones.1 point

I agree, if this isn't a loose wire then somehow a charge got stuck on the diaphragm. That should get back to normal over use so I'd just leave them sitting and playing music.1 point

Nothing bad should happen. It could probably be the loosen wire connections. You might want to try resolder all the soldered joints first. Well, some small dust could also be a problem. Check and clean the stators and the diaphragm could solve the problem too.1 point

Finally, I’ve had some time to sit down and dot down my final thoughts on the CRBN. They’ve been here for a couple of months, but I really wanted to have a Carbon CC up and running to try them on before I wrote anything final. I rustled up some pretty ghetto front and back panels this week, so I finally have one for my own system. Feeding it is a Denafrips Terminator DAC but I’ve tried it with a number of other sources plus whatever amps I’ve up and running at any given point, KGSSHV, KGST, CCS modified Stax amps etc. Now I want to start with how it’s been living with them for the past two months, in a word flawless. No issues at all with this second set, no imbalance, noises from the drivers… nothing like that. They are also supremely comfortable, and I’ve worn them for hours on end with no discomfort. Now this is Iceland so not exactly warm and the all-leather earpads might be an issue in warmer climates. Audeze might make hybrid pads like the Sennheiser HE60/90 but here I just open a window to cool down... 😉 Also, a word on driving them. They are inefficient and do need a lot of power. Anybody claiming otherwise is just full of it and thinks gain and position of the volume knob has anything to do with power levels. They are not quite 007 bad in this regard but they do reward a more powerful amp when pushing them. Baseline for excellent performance would be the KGST/KGSSHV line but even with the CCS modified Stax amps they work well at moderate volume levels. Push them though and yeah… you need power behind them. So how do they sound… well TLDR, how I’ve always wished the Sennheiser HE90 should have sounded but never did. These were my first impressions, slightly oversized soundstage and not as precise as others but far from the mess that is the HE90. Plenty of deep, well controlled bass too but not quite up to the 007 level. They can get bright when the source calls for it, slightly excessively so at times, but far from the forward nature of the 009’s. The soundstage is a bit larger than life, but it makes for plenty of presence and separation so while not pinpoint accurate, they are very close to it. Overall, they are just so balanced and pleasant to listen to regardless of what you feed them. Now for the only real issue, the damping is something which has annoyed me more and more. Now as some might know… I’m a bit picky… just a tiny bit… 😛 and while it is not always apparent, some songs or parts of them just sound off to me. This generally true for every headphones I use so I remove all damping when I can. Also, a large part of why I like the 007’s so much due to their innovative air damping. Now on the CRBN the damping is damn good, but I can still tell it is there. This is not like the Sennheiser HE-1 for instance, where that bloody amp with its mosfet based output stage and joke of a front end just spreads its dirty fingerprints on everything. This is far more subtle and only affects some tracks so for instance, it is too closed in when it shouldn’t be, bass has a twang to it that shouldn’t be there… something like that. This is a very minor gripe, and this is me being super picky so take it as you wish. Still, I’d love to try these drivers with less damping… 🙂 So, this aside, there is so much to recommend here. They are certainly not cheap but just holding them you can see where the money has gone. Plug them into a good amp yeah, they will impress. The only issue for me it they have rekindled an old project, take some LCD-2’s and fit them with custom electrostatic drivers. Anybody know of a cheap set I can buy? 😉 Now I’ve not received my SR-X9000000000000 yet so I can’t compare them but on its own the CRBN is a great product. They are not perfect (what is?) but as a first stab at making electrostatics, they are damn impressive. I’m adding this set to my collection, and they are certainly in my top 5 all-time greats. I really must say they are a breath of fresh air as the releases over the last few years have been such a disappointment. It really has been a 10-year slump now so here’s hoping we get something excellent over the next 10 years.1 point

Finished the last of three episodes of The Way Down: God, Greed, and the Cult of Gwen Shamblin. She seems so normal.1 point

I gave Foundation a try. I have not read the trilogy (or any other material). I made it to episode 4, and I found that I still didn't care about the characters, so I stopped. I think it was partially the way the story is being told. A character has a huge emotional reaction, and you don't know why until the next episode. Hmmm, am I suppose to go back now and watch the emotional reaction again now that I get it? Oh well.1 point

Well… I’ve finished the work with the new headphone and it ended in a disaster. I decided to resolder all solder points, so I took the driver package a part. Even removed the small cable connector. After cleaning all solder points, I connect outer stator and put into its position. It was a bit tricky to arrange the short wire in the connector house. Next was the diaphragm and here I made the disastrous mistake and got a scratch on the membrane when I should solder its wire. I guess I’m getting to old and clumsy for this kind of delicate work. Nowadays I have to wear headband magnifier which also makes it more difficult. Anyhow, I finished the assembly and have one good side and one bad with a small defect on membrane. After visual inspection with good light and magifier I don’t think the lower loudness had anything with dust or any foreign particles to do nor bad connections. So, I really should had waited for this… Thanks a lot, Wachara and Birgir!0 points

It seems I’m running out of luck. SR-X9000 was the best headphone I’ve listened to only for a couple of days. You better keep your Omega, Andy. Today the Stax have a terrible unbalance. Left side is more than 12dB lower then right side. It was left side I opened, lifted inner stator and flipped as you see on picture a few posts above, removed plastic ring and easily lifted the diaphragm and gently held (didn't touched the membran) it in hand for a short while before I put it back. Could that be the reason or is just an unfortunate coincidence? No worry though. It’s a calculated risk and mostly nothing bad happens. If just had been something cheaper. 😭0 points

Julie Green: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/05/arts/julie-green-dead.html Six tacos, six glazed doughnuts and a Cherry Coke: That was the last meal of a man executed in Oklahoma in July 1999. Rendered in cobalt blue glaze on a white china plate the next year, it was the first in Julie Green’s decades-long art project, “The Last Supper,” which documented the final meals of death row prisoners around the country. * * * In 2001 in Indiana, a prison granted an inmate’s request to have his mother make him chicken dumplings in the institution’s kitchen. Professor Green painted the word “Mother” on the platter that pays homage to that meal. ... In Georgia in 2009, a mentally disabled inmate asked for half a pecan pie. He didn’t understand the concept of execution, and he intended to save some of the pie to eat afterward.0 points

I made some clamp hangers and I'm OK with the aesthetics. This week has been weird and potentially dangerous on and off. On Wednesday, I was getting ready for the electrician to finish work in the new shop and he suggested that I could remove peg board from the back wall and drill the studs to run wire for the new outlets. I cut out pieces of the peg board and started drilling the stud closest to the corner with a spade bit. Arcy sparky popping circuit, I drilled right through the romex stapled to the back side of the stud. I didn't die. That same afternoon, I was going to make those clamp hangers and decided I would use a fancy Incra miter sled I have. The Sawstop miter track is in a different spot so I had to cut the sled on the saw and moved the metal fence way back away from the blade because it shouldn't get cut but also because the Sawstop safety feature triggers with metal as well as flesh. Long story short, I moved the fence back to near zero and went to cut the first board. It seemed like the the blade was still cutting the sled slightly so I looked closely at the fence and blade and it seemed OK until the mechanism fired and the blade disappeared. Fuck me. I got through yesterday without major mishap, and today I wanted to try clearing out outdoor drain before the next atmospheric river hits on Monday. I was using our new Ridgid Powered Drain Cleaner for the second time. The drain is very low and I had to learn over into the drain while feeding the snake, which is operated by a foot pedal. Long story short, my beard got caught in the cable snake spiral and it ripped out a big chunk before I could turn it off. That was quite freaky, and after cleaning up I couldn't quite take shaving for the first time in years. I didn't like the halfway look of disgruntled mayor of Whoville, so I have ended the day with a bit of Marshall Matt Dillon. The drain is clear, now that I got a tennis ball and lots of rocks and leaves out.0 points
