  1. Oh, and speaking of UC Davis, I saw Desmond Tutu speak while I was in school there. It was during the anti apartheid demonstrations and the UC system was rife with sit-ins and students occupying buildings, etc. It was a truly moving experience, even in my animal house phase (has it ended?). I had been working as an intern for the California Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy and he spoke too. The magic of the internet produced a video of the whole event, so I'm going to relive it shortly. Here it is in case anybody would possibly be interested. https://video.ucdavis.edu/media/TutuA+A+Celebration+of+Human+Rights/1_lsfznxso/25823992 RIP Bishop Tutu

  10. I have a German friend named Finn I've known on Discogs for nearly 20 years (going back to 2002) who's been a strict vinyl only DJ since the 1980s. He's a few years older than me (he turned 52 a couple weeks ago) and has maintained constant dedication to being a vinyl only techno DJ for decades, I found out recently that he replaced his DJ mixer. He had been using the same one since 1995(!) The old one is on the left, obviously. Ecler didn't sell its products in the US back in '95, but I remember seeing their wacky designs in European electronic music magazines in the mid 90s. Those wacky angled channel faders are quite a relic. I am genuinely amazed when I see a piece of consumer electronics that gets used daily last for in excess of a quarter century. Also, I'm always slightly jealous of my European friends who live in rich pockets of electronic music culture.
  11. RIP Wayne Thiebaud. I have the exact SF streetscape that you posted (copy obviously).

  24. RIP artist Wayne Thiebaud at 101. He was a professor at my alma mater UC Davis so I saw his work early in life. He is most famous for his cakes and ice creams and such, but I loved his streetscapes of SF and also his quirky portraits. My dad grew up next door to Richard Diebenkorn, and Thiebaud was influenced by him and his city streets and parks always reminded of him (not an original or unique observation, just to be clear). RIP Prof. after a very good innings. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2021/12/26/obituaries/wayne-thiebaud-dead.amp.html
  25. RIP Archbishop Desmond Tutu....an incredible voice for equality in South Africa and beyond.....
  26. RIP giant Joan Didion. "I’m not telling you to make the world better, because I don’t think that progress is necessarily part of the package. I’m just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment." https://www.npr.org/2021/12/23/375431790/joan-didion-obituary
