  1. Rather than watch the apple event I spent an hour and a half listening to prog. You decide what is a better use of time. Innocence & Danger The Neal Morse Band 2021 https://album.link/i/1570081572 I have followed Neal for many years. I really liked Spock's Beard back in the day and he also started his own project. But he also had a higher calling, and the music suffered in content and quality. I am happy with this 2021 album, there are some great jams, some great themes, and a 31 minute track (above). I won't call this a return to roots, or classic Neal, because I think all music should look forward and evolve. But I like this album.

  2. After 10 years of servitude my Garmin Edge 810 has perished... luckily I didn't buy a new pc so my "candy budget" was intact and yesterday I bought an Edge 1040. It's huge and although the 810 had quite a few sections and metrics, this junk surpasses it. I don't really need that much but one of our patrons made us a good offers this year so... One question, Will I be able to see the Stanley Cup with this? 😁

  3. I've become a big fan of Neal Morse in the last few years. I really dig his musicianship, and his 7-string guitar hero, Eric Gillette has turned into a bit of a hero of mine as well. Good thing I don't listen to lyrics much, though, good god... I have not. I "put up" with harsh vocals, with very few exceptions, but only when the music is so great. My criteria is similar to yours -- far too many of them are just too "one-note", and as a real musician, that just irks me. I find the exceptions hard to find, especially when I don't go seeking them out.

  4. After my initial, not so smooth run... Tested in again in an improved system, also tried two cables, sources, amps. Within a day, I decided that I got angry enough to put an end to this, because brain burn-in won't work so well on this one. My opinion still stands. Either I simply fail to comprehend its sound, or Spritzer is just plain right. Very fast, textured, but bright and thin, lacking energy, unnaturally dry timbre (a lot of estat haters say that about many other modern models) with forced detail. The tangible difference against an Omega is maybe not more than 10-25% depending on the aspect, but when adding it all up, its massive. Its usage case is quite narrow, the recording needs to be quite specific. I have quite a few other oldie but goody Staxes as well, where trading in a fair amount of technicalities and FR balance will bring in more of that enjoyment factor. On a more positive note, I expected the Omega to act like an emerging superpower and raise its abilities. With the Carbon, it has done just that. Nothing wrong with this amp at all. Whatever chain this headphone needs, has to be very specific (warm, lush) - and even then, some character traits might not really change, so it might just still get a good old fashioned beating by others...

  5. Here is result of today’s work. The board was milled yesterday. Schematically it’s similar to CFA3. Two of the triple Darlingtons transistors are to-126. All other transistors are sot-23 and sot-26. To early to say how stable this thing is…

  8. I'm so sorry for your loss, Steve. Life can be downright brutal at times. And fuck cancer.

  9. I have learned to appreciate the technique in the last few years. Now, it is about finding singers that can sing and scream, but the real trick for me is enunciation. If I can understand the screamed words without following along with printed lyrics (taking me out of the listening), then I can stay in the groove and get the message at the same time. And you are correct, 'good' screaming uses false folds and do not harm vocal cords.

  11. Bah, this is HC, one thread is as good as another. My (state run) liquor store has the Flor 18 in stock for $39.99/750mL or maybe I should spring for something more in keeping with this place.

  12. I just talked to his ex and close friend Craig on the phone. It seems that last Tuesday the Dr. informed him that the chemotherapy wasn't working any longer, and that they were stopping treatment. He lasted a week after that. His Mother passed a few months ago, and in a way I'm glad. That would've been extremely tough on her.

  13. R.I.P. Shaun Kitka! I met my friend Shaun in 1996. He was 18, and he a several other young gay guys were leaving an underage dance club in downtown Anchorage, just as I and a friend were riding past on our bikes. He and his friends were immediately physically and verbally assaulted by two larger and older, homophobic assholes. Nothing gets me to a rage state faster than homophobic bullies! I dropped my bike and grabbed the biggest guy and started telling him what I thought of him while poking my finger into his chest quite aggressively. Two cops that were at a flop bar next door came up and pulled me away from this jerk and started detaining me, when Shaun explained what had happened. One cop actually acted like it wasn't a big deal that young gay guys were being hassled, which further pissed me off! However, the second cop was having none of that bullshit, and after explaining that putting my finger in his chest wasn't allowed, he basically ripped the two bullies a new asshole. Shaun and his friends were very thankful for my intervention, and insisted on buying me breakfast. We all got to know each other, but Shaun and I became good friends immediately. I became a kind of pseudo Father figure. I introduced him to a long term boyfriend, and later actually moved in with him in Sacramento after that relationship ended. We got along well, but the new boyfriend didn't understand our relationship and was crazy jealous. To the point of being mean to my dog Suzy. I couldn't have that, and that's how I ended up moving to Fairfax the first time, in 2014. It did strain our friendship some, but we did manage to keep that friendship alive, especially after he told me about his cancer diagnosis a few years ago. He called me on a regular basis. I think that he could share his fears and his hopes with me in a way that he couldn't with his boyfriend. And I think the length of our friendship provided a degree of trust and familiarity that he didn't have with anyone else. He never knew his Father, and in many ways he looked to me for that kind of relationship. I also knew his entire family, as screwed up as they were. I last talked to Shaun two weeks ago. He sounded great. Things were going well medically, and he was really excited about a new flight simulater he was putting together. I just read about his passing today on Facebook, so it's a real shock! I've been losing siblings the last few years, and that's tough, but Shaun was 42 years old, and that's different. I had some time to prepare with my Brother. This came out of nowhere!

  14. RIP to an old friend of mine. We'd known each other since somewhere between 4 and 6 years old. Not really close anymore, but he was a fire dective (or something) when Kristen's mom burned down their house. We had Kristen's step-dad's ashes (Emma, the kids' aunt's father) inside and I was able to catch up with him and get him to go in and retrieve them. They were in a bag inside a cardboard box. He was able to save those before the fire reignited and would have taken the ashes (and some other things we got out with Matt's help.) His mom was my 2nd grade teacher back when my dad was principal. I heard a lot of chatter about the two who passed away, but woke up this morning to a message from my mom who let me know it was Matt. He's at least the 2nd or 3rd from that friend group who's died in the past few years (the other being my best friend growing up.) He left behind a wife and I believe two young kids. As someone who lost his dad when he was 10 (and my dad was just a couple years older than Matt and I were/are now), this one was sad. https://newschannel9.com/news/local/communities-mourn-loss-of-thp-trooper-marion-county-commissioner-in-helicopter-crash RIP Matt Blansett.

  15. Here's a long but VERY eye-opening twitter thread of what's going on that details one Russian paratrooper's account of his experiences. TL;DR the levels of corruption and incompetence in the Russian armed forces is simply staggering and defies any comprehension to people who are used to relative competence in western countries. And if you're wondering "how can Russia be losing with so much modern equipment, or have all of these capabilities that they don't use" etc etc... read this. Now take a look at the 600 foot yachts Russian oligarchs sail around on and ask yourself where that money came from, and then thank your lucky fucking stars that you live here and not there. I asked a Russian/Ukrainian friend what his take on all of this was, and he simply said "you know how some countries have a mafia? Now imagine if the mafia had a country." P.S. If you don't have a twitter account, just replace "twitter.com" with "nitter.net" in the url. Nitter is a free open source front end for twitter and while it's buggy, at least it won't require you to sign up or collect your data without asking.

  16. Maybe I’m not coffee snob enough, but I found Onyx to be good but nothing amazing. It’s readily available here since it’s almost local and a handful of places have it as their daily drip. I’ve actually never found any coffee to be good on the same level as a good beer/whiskey is. Maybe I just need to spike it more often 😂
