  1. Milling process went smooth. Here is the board populated with components I had at hand and it works alright I would say. It is playing in pair with a Carbon I built three years ago. The Carbon to the left but its actually the right channel. Amplifier is upside down. I put the trimmer on bottom side – I forgot that this isn’t a tube amplifier with none component side facing upwards. In schematic posted earlier there is a couple of 2SA1486 but I took a pair of KSA1156 instead which is OK as HV is +/-400V.

  2. Schematic a few posts up is updated and now reflects what I’ve built. Changes: R21 – R23 and Q3,Q4. Picture from top. Carbon board to the right with ceramic insulators. New thing to the left. All transistors (2SA1968 and 2SA4686) on bracket are insulated and don’t need ceramic insulators.

  9. The Southampton to Sydney ("in only 85 flying hours") empire flying boats seemed a bit more fun. First class only Daylight flying at 150mph / < 5000ft with overnight signature hotel stops ... https://sydneylivingmuseums.com.au/stories/flying-boats-sydneys-golden-age-aviation "Accidents were frequent: in the first six years, 32 people died in seven incidents. Imperial Airways never achieved the levels of technological innovation of its competitors" https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Airways

  10. Intrigued by that old colorized photo, I did some google-fu about Imperial Airways (now called BA!). They were first to run flights to Australia. There were 35 stops on the journey, which took just short of a month to get to Melbourne. Apparently their safety record was not great....

  11. Thought this free Sunday program might be interesting for some. https://silentfilm.org/making-music-for-film/ Our next free online masterclass features DJ Spooky in conversation with Carter Burwell and Graham Reynolds. These three extraordinary musicians (and friends) will talk about composing for film—touching on the similarities and differences for silent cinema. Paul D. Miller (DJ Spooky) is an artist and composer with an affinity for silent film. His live remix of D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation—Rebirth of a Nation—premiered in 2004 and Miller went on to score Dovzhenko’s Earth and Robert Wiene’s The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, among others. He executive-produced the Pioneers of African-American Cinema box set, which features his scores for two Oscar Micheaux films. Miller performed at SFSFF 2017 with his score for Micheaux’s Body and Soul and there are plans afoot to bring Miller to San Francisco to perform at SFSFF’s next in-person event. Carter Burwell is known to anyone who’s seen a film by the Coen Brothers—his ineffable touch is on everything from Blood Simple to The Big Lebowski to The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, not to mention his scores for films by Todd Haynes and Spike Jonze! Graham Reynolds composed the elegant music for Richard Linklater’s A Scanner Darkly, Before Midnight, and Where’d You Go, Bernadette, among his many other film scores. Reynolds got his film-composing start by scoring silent films!

  12. Agreed. She's a favorite. Always has been. In fact, I think I'll listen to her now. Thanks for the indirect recommendation.

  15. Stumbled across a great video on M/S recording and processing. The example is done in FL Studio (I think) but you can do this in Cubase just as easily. I sure wish I'd seen this when I first fooled around with this technique! It kinda messed with my head just reading about it?

  18. Yes, I use a small CNC machine. Just made a file for the CNC machine for top side of the board. Below you can see the route (red lines) for a 15th or 0.38 mm end mill. I’ll try to make a board in the next few days - if no unexpected happens…

  19. I would say it’s a modified KGSShv or Carbon with T2 style current sources at outputs. My intention is +/-400V but +/-450V will be OK as 2SA1968 is a 900V device (I think). Schematically it looks like this. I’ve saved the old, now hard to find, transistors from my first built electrostatic amplifier - an onboard heat sinks KGSShv.

  20. Decided to use the new air fryer as God intended - donuts. Liberal extra glaze applied, hence messiness. The first few looked pretty standard but were consumed quickly.

  23. I am/was the moderator for the Tape Project forum and I have a modified Technics RS1500 with a custom tube output that replaces the 70's era solid state amp. I use that for listening to a collection of about 400 reel to reel tapes. I also have an Ampex ATR700 which is one of the last machines that Ampex sold. It was a collaboration between Ampex and Teac. I have a couple of head-blocks for the Ampex and I did some experimenting with the mono/full track head set processing tracks similar to what you're planning. The results were mixed, but in the long run, I ended up using tape machine plugins. I admit that my mixing chops weren't nearly what they should have been to make an honest assessment of the process but reel to reel tape is not the cheapest or quickest media to deal with and I'm pretty happy with the subtle results I get with the plugins I use. After running the Tape Project forum, I did get practiced at teaching and guiding other folks on the care and feeding of reel to reel tape machines. I wrote a guide which (although many links to pictures are now dead) still exists and may help you getting your Revox running. I'm a huge fan of these machines so I'd be happy to give you any advice you might need. Just PM me! Here's a link to the forum. The Beginners Guide is located at the top of the General Discussion page. https://forum.tapeproject.com/ Here's a pic of my listening machine.

  24. RIP, Elgin Baylor. I've always had a soft spot for those Baylor/West/Chamberlin Lakers squads. To go up against the Celtics year-after-year and lose again and again... that does something to a man. Poor Elgin retired just before they finally broke through in '72.
