Putting non-coax speakers on their sides is a sure way how to fuxxor up the sweetspot. Put them upside down if you need to get the tweeter lower.

Here's some porn from me. Just got the new tops for my subs. Each has a FaitalPro HF1440 + 18sound XR1464C horn and four ScanSpeak 15WU midwoofers. Amplification and filtering done by a Hypex FA253 plate amp. Sounds absolutely killer. Sadly, the amp for the big subs seems to be dying, so I'm listening to the tops only. Luckily, they go down to lower thirties. The resulting area of the four midwoofers exceeds a single 10" woofer, so it can go pretty loud as well with that +/-9mm Xlin. Here's a better look of the thing.

Benchmark is a Class-G amp with an SMPSU, so it's more akin to a Class-AB. The Mytek is Class-D and uses Pascal modules which aren't bad, but I don't consider them to be of the same level as nCore and Puri-fi. And has DIRAC which will make the biggest audible difference. If @shellylh can swing that, then it should be pretty much perfect.

These bookshelves aren't that power hungry. The question is how wild is the impedance/phase curve. For what the ATC amp has under the hood the price is a daylight robbery. I don't know what's your disposition against Class-D, but recently I heard an active system based on Hypex nCore amps and... it was pretty fricken great. Maybe see if one of NAD's newer M-series power amps are available for a good price. Nord Audio nCore and Puri-fi amps are also a superb value.

I actually enjoyed what Grover Neville was writing there. My general beef with most reviewers out there is that none have the technical expertise to call out mfg's on their bullshit. At best they might give less-than-max stars and tell that the product might satisfy someone out there. Rtings is doing a decent job at reviewing cans, but their focus is the consumer market. I tried to kinda replicate Tyll's style to some degree when I was reviewing stuff for Sonarworks, but well... they too turned to consumers for the pie in the sky.

They finally pulled the plug on Innerfidelity. It was a sad spectacle with the new editor and his "lifestyle" direction, but at least now it's over.

Yeah, best job I've ever had! Saw the company grow from 5 people to 50. And how many jobs out there expose you to almost all of the headphones that matter? Sadly, we had to part ways... We tried it as well. It's a decent method to find out resonances, but for lower Q stuff it's pretty much useless. Generally you need a good set of ears to match the EQ to a known neutral speaker system. That way you can get to a target curve that actually makes sense. Harman did it this way and so did we.

For your viewing pleasure. Elear Clear Utopia Sennheiser HD650 All measurements were performed by Sonarworks. They do DSP-based headphone and speaker calibration. During the 5 years I was with the company I can say that even now they're hard to beat in terms of headphone measurements. Mostly due to the fact that all measurement curves are checked by audio engineer ears so that they make the headphones sound as close as possible to a known tonal reference. All of these curves are averaged from at least three different samples from the headphone in question. I can't tell much more about the actual method. Just make sure you only compare them to other Sonarworks curves.

Here's Elear (which is similar to Clear in many ways): Here's Utopia: The LF roll-off on the Utopia makes it sound leaner even if objectively it extends lower. It's like comparing sealed and ported box speakers.

I prefer Clear to the Utopia. With Utopia I pretty much required calibration which is an insult for the asking price. The extra technicalities over the Clear are nice for sure, but I like bass.

I really enjoyed the Outsider. The photography was beyond excellent.

The transistors I got performed up to spec and looked similar to known genuine parts. Even the legs had slight discoloration characteristic to old electronics.

A pair of 2sj109/2sk389. Sounds better that way and the DC is way more stable. I'll add that even with the THAT340 it sounded superb!

I'm adding a protector to mine, will run it from one of the GRLV's. The shutdown on mine sends a 2VDC transient out, so I'd better be safe, never know when power can go out and you won't be able to unplug the phones.
