June 14, 201511 yr Hi Kevin: Is it possible to make the filter and bypass capacitors also SMD? The finished board would have a really low profile and can be stacked together and still fit into a slim case. Edited June 14, 201511 yr by mwl168
June 14, 201511 yr the holes are feedthru to the other side. the to92 are not the same pinout and those holes are very tiny and masked. could do the caps as surface mount, pick a package. the pots would end up the tallest item.
June 16, 201511 yr Did some search on Mouser. SMD film caps seem quite expensive and not that small in size. Maybe use polymer filter capacitors and stick with through-hole film bypass capacitors?
June 17, 201511 yr surface mount board finished and tested and bug free.http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/dsc_0659.jpg there is one set of boards left if anyone is interested Edited June 17, 201511 yr by kevin gilmore
June 18, 201511 yr Copied. I'll order the through-hole version as I still have some MPSA/MPSW Edited June 18, 201511 yr by G600
June 18, 201511 yr I do have 2 sets of the original boards with the mpsw parts if anyone is interested. also 2 sets of the unbal to bal boards, also with the mpsw parts.
June 19, 201511 yr for the truly insane among you (birgir really wanted this) (work in progress) http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/ssdynalobalsmt.jpg
June 20, 201511 yr In case anyone still wants Dynalo boards, I have one set left. It's the slightly older MPSW/MPSA version that requires the simple capacitor grounding jumper fix that Kevin pointed out a couple of pages upthread. (I also have several extra protect3 boards.)

June 20, 201511 yr I've double checked 2^3 times, Digikey delivered me 31 out of 32 20ohm vishay CMF50s. The frustration is so real. Edited June 20, 201511 yr by lkong
June 20, 201511 yr I would have gone with the resistors I used for the 20 ohm, but that should work fine. pretty quick assembly.
June 22, 201511 yr Oh, please stay away from Canare Star-Quad. Very high capacitance. The so-called advantages of the twisted starquad are offset by its disadvantages. I suggest Mogami cable designated for AES/EBU, but it's really very low capacitance balanced cable great for analog: http://www.mogamicable.com/category/bulk/dig_interface/aes_ebu/ It's very neutral, no sonic color, very wide bandwidth. The only down side of the Mogami is you have to be very fast on the soldering iron because the insulation melts very quickly. But then, good soldering technique is a badge of being a DIYer. I've got another section of Canare L4E6S ordered so I can wire up a balanced cable. Single ended it sounds pretty good with LCD2, maybe seems a bit bright. I'll need to double blind with the KSA5 to see if it's just me. I'll take your advice and swap to balanced input at some point. Switch is from ebay here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151028998690 Jumpers? I added two for the sense right at the unit....is there one that comes off? Voltage is a little low, 13.3 is what I'm getting out of it now. I'd be in for a 4deck 10K if the price is reasonable.
June 22, 201511 yr If low capacitance is the desired parameter, look into Belden 2221 microphone and AES/EBU cable at 13pf per foot. http://www.belden.com/products/enterprisecabling/brilliance_1776_2221_microphone_cables.cfm It sounds pretty good for being fairly inexpensive.
June 23, 201511 yr Ordered off board version of golden reference boards from seeedstudio 1.6mm 2oz copper Will have some extras for grab when my order gets here.
June 23, 201511 yr so you have heard of book matched veniers... well... http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/dynalobal16.jpg
June 24, 201511 yr so you have heard of book matched veniers... well... http://gilmore.chem.northwestern.edu/dynalobal16.jpg Very nice, any possibility of adding thru hole pads for the output stage emitter resistors ? I am thinking about using Vishay TX2575 Z-Foil resistors (0.15"/3.81mm leadspacing) Texas Components lists the ASM2575 SMD version but they seem to have trouble getting the substrates for the small (0805, 1206) sizes. Happened to me the last couple of times when I tried to place an order for them.
