March 27, 200917 yr Just to get rid of the overwhelming bass. Most people don't like it. (I do, most don't.) BTW -- should be a very good system! The ECSS is nice and should be a good match for the DT770's.
March 27, 200917 yr Author Just to get rid of the overwhelming bass. Most people don't like it. (I do, most don't.) BTW -- should be a very good system! The ECSS is nice and should be a good match for the DT770's. Yeah, I'm pretty happy about this potential setup (Nate's idea). And I was also concerned about the bass, but I think that's the fun part of the DT770. It gets tiresome for me after a while, but it will be miles better than whatever he's been using recently, if anything. And it seems like the bassiness might work with his hearing, which is good because I am not at all confident that he can work the iPod's EQ. My Dad the Basshead.
March 27, 200917 yr Dinny, I think the EC/SS is a fantastic choice and I am sure he will love the combo you picked out for him. I loved the EC/SS for the time I had it in my system and occasionally wonder if I should have kept it along with my tube amp.
March 27, 200917 yr Everyone really had wonderful suggestions. I like that you decided to go with the EC/SS and DT770 Dinny. Also, as Deepak and others mentioned the AT woodies don't leak like the Denon's do. I wish your dad the best on his audio/headphone journey .
March 27, 200917 yr Dinny, What's the source going to be for this thing? I've probably got a set of IC's laying around that could fall into the box with the 770s.
March 27, 200917 yr Author Nate, That would be great, but only if it's easy. Source is most likely an iPod. So I guess a mini-to-RCA. I'll get the LOD from this ALO I've been hearing so much about. No worries--I have an LOD.
March 27, 200917 yr Kenwood KH-K1000 are by far the closest thing to closed HD650 IME. Far more so than DX1000. They are also easy to drive by any amp. Just my 2c...
March 28, 200917 yr Nah, these were T20. T50RP are similar but a bit better, plus they sound good unmodded and can be bought for $70. I good durable headphone to see if he like that kind of sound.
March 28, 200917 yr I ended up liking the T20v2 better than the T50RP, FWIW. Sounds more natural and is easier to get the treble up. Downsides are that it's supraaural with not too much soundstage.

March 28, 200917 yr Well, actually the W11jpn was fairly nice but they're rare. They're not that rare, at least not on Head-Case. I know someone has two units and the second one is supposedly NOS. Both are pristine condition and sound pretty good driven by a ZD. Team Animal Avatar members might get a special discount, too.

March 28, 200917 yr Tempt people? No way, I wouldn't do such a mean thing. Here's an old photo I remember seeing before. I'm told that one of the L3000 is gone, as well as the W2002. The elite Team ATH numbers are dwindling while the hordes of AD700 take over, and they might soon be gone, lost forever.
March 28, 200917 yr Good job I have an animal avatar, might be good for the future (just kidding) Glorious collection, especially in the left and the middle.
March 28, 200917 yr Are JP#'s W2002 still for sale. For the price of a pair of Darth Beyers, you can buy pair of gorgeous, good sounding (at least I'm told), closed headphones.
March 28, 200917 yr Author A little pricey for this setup, but beautiful phones. It will be EC/SS--->DT770.
March 28, 200917 yr I predict he'll buy a Zana by Christmas. And when he does, look into a modded AKG K340. I know people talk about synergy, but this defines synergy. I have never heard my K340's sound better out of a single-ended amp.
March 29, 200917 yr Monkey, you can borrow my D5000 and see how your dad likes them before you make the decision.
March 29, 200917 yr They suck, don't bother. Plus, Albert's probably are soaked with cheap tequila too.
