Alex Chilton died yesterday at age 59 from an apparent heart attack. That's fucked up. I've been meaning to post this sad news ever since my wife called to tell me she heard it on the radio while she was driving to work. Great and influential musician. Also been meaning to play some Big Star and shit but I have been too busy to do anything fun today. Will have to toast him later, but for now here are the lyrics to The Replacements' Alex Chilton: If he was from Venus, would he feed us with a spoon? If he was from Mars, wouldn't that be cool? Standing right on campus, would he stamp us in a file? Hangin' down in Memphis all the while. Children by the million s…

To expand on Steve's idea, how about we all post the first HF rigs we had as a small trip down memory lane. Guess I'll get the ball rolling... My first HF rig (and prior to me knowing about all these crazy people and their headphones) was just a HD600 plugged into an old Kenwood integrated amp (headphone socket fed via resistors from the main amp) but since it isn't electrostatic it doesn't really count in my case. My first real headphone setup was the SRM-313/SR-007Mk1 combo, complete with a round SRE-15N extension cable and a stand/cover. After this all hope was lost... Source was shared with my speaker rig and the interconnects used cost more then the …

Last week there was a small-plane crash in East Palo Alto (SF Bay Area), killing three Tesla Motors employees and knocking out power to a chunk of Silicon Valley for much of the day. (Amazingly nobody on the ground was killed despite the plane striking a home child day-care facility.) East Palo Alto contains some dodgy areas, and is outfitted with the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system. It turns out the crash triggered ShotSpotter, which is designed to log and triangulate on loud, sharp noises, and to log the sounds preceding and following them. NTSB expects these data to be useful in reconstructing the events around the crash. Palo Alto Online : ShotSpotter …

Ok, so I don't remember the actual day it started, but it was the middle of the month in February of 2006, so this is close enough. I've had a blast watching you grow up, just don't become a tweenager TOO fast. This is been my favorite place to be on the internet for the past four years straight, and I figure it'll continue to stay that way as long as it's around. Thanks to all those who've made it what it is. **BRENT**

Google's shut down a number of music blogs, making the whole blog's content and archives inaccessible not only to readers but to the blog's authors themselves. The issue seems to be accusations of DMCA or other infringement that breach Blogger or Blogspot's Terms of Service, but bloggers are claiming they had permission and encouragement from artists and labels to post the material. More details in the article. The Twitter topic is #musicblogocide2k10. (Yes, it's normally Ric who posts these things, but at this hour I'm assuming he's sleeping the sleep of the just. Hope he won't mind my stepping in.)

So after some time looking for a job I've been accepted for a position in MD that matches what I'm looking for. I have a car and all my belongings are here in CA so I'll be driving across the country to my new location with my essentials. I'll be shipping the nonessentials since it'll be easy to do so as they're still packed in moving boxes from my separation. My father will be travelling with me to help split the driving duties. As I haven't done a cross-country drive before, I'd like some input on the planned route which is this so far: Los Angeles, CA to Baltimore, MD - Google Maps I've mostly kept to the I-40 as I heard it's the better route to take, though I'm…
