Wild and Crazy Go Nuts!

  1. Last week there was a small-plane crash in East Palo Alto (SF Bay Area), killing three Tesla Motors employees and knocking out power to a chunk of Silicon Valley for much of the day. (Amazingly nobody on the ground was killed despite the plane striking a home child day-care facility.) East Palo Alto contains some dodgy areas, and is outfitted with the ShotSpotter gunfire detection system. It turns out the crash triggered ShotSpotter, which is designed to log and triangulate on loud, sharp noises, and to log the sounds preceding and following them. NTSB expects these data to be useful in reconstructing the events around the crash. Palo Alto Online : ShotSpotter …

  7. Started by Duggeh,

I'm going to build a new PC to replace my crumbling AthlonXP system, I've sorted out almost everything I'm going to go for, but I'm still having some indecision over the OS drive. Either the OCZ Core 64Gig SSD, or the Western Digital Velociraptor. I had the 74gig raptor in my primary Athlon XP system before it went unreliable and I was forced onto this crappy shuttle. The Raptor74 is so very crunchy noisy these days, I really don't want the Velociraptor to end up being that way, in spite of the claims that it is quieter than the previous raptors, and of course the SSD is silent. The rest of the PC is going to be as quiet as I can realistically achieve on an LGA775 plat…

Posterboy. Dude joined in 2008, went to all the trouble of creating a profile and uploading a tremendously unflattering picture just to tell us about the 1964 Vincent Price version of I Am Legend. I remember when I saw his post, in 2008, and saId, 'Damn that's one unflattering picture'. Still he's lookin good for 90. Cheers.

  12. Hi, thanks to Jacob (EdipisReks) I am being allowed to start this thread. The idea came about from how much some of us like the amps produced by Graham Slee combined with not many members having listened to his products. Hopefully this loaner program will allow some members the opportunity to try the gear and comment on how well it sounds and/or if improvements are needed. There are two large boxes on the way from Great Britain with the following gear: 1 Gram Amp 2 Communicator 1 Gram Amp 2 Special Edition 1 Gram Amp 3 Fanfare 1 Elevator EXP/PSU1 1 Reflex M/PSU1 1 Reflex C/PSU1 1 Solo SRGII/PSU1 1 Solo Ultra-Linear/PSU1 1 Novo 1 …

  13. After the batteries in the laundry, I decided to check all the battery powered devices for corrosion/leaks last night. I have a tactical flashlight with CR123a lithium batteries in it. When I opened it up, there was black powder around the batteries. I put the batteries back in the flashlight, I tried googling this and the only thing I could find was black residue after a lithium battery explosion which seems quite toxic. I'm hoping that this is just carbon or something. The batteries work, although to guess this could be from the last pair when they went bad (they didn't explode either). Does anyone know what this might be? Should it throw away the batteries and/or f…

So who is it? Chen is probably the best, but my favorite has got to be Morimoto for his creativity and cross-cultural cooking style. The Natto battle is great. I know there were a few more that had a few battles, but I couldn't fit them. And I don't even know their names, so whatever.

this past year, one of the better parts of my driving schedule has been listening to wait wait dont tell me. a very well written (or performed, if it isnt rehearsed) news quiz/slight comedy npr show. part of the allure has been the voice of peter sagal and his presentation and after a few months i had a fairly decent picture of what he might look like in my head. a few minutes ago i randomly happened upon the npr website and having never seen a picture of him, i searched for him. he doesnt look like anything i had pictured =/ not that that changes my desire to listen to the show but it does put me off a tad. i want to say i feel cheated but it is just something silly. …

I just learned of this site tonight at the head-fi meet, as jay casually mentioned it. Then I see he's got hundreds of posts here, and there are a bunch of other guys I recognize from head-fi! Then I try and create an account, and it already has my name/pw. Firstly how the hell did this escape me for so long (and what exactly is it)? And did you guys scoop the head-fi database or what?

So a friend of mine is trying to track down a painter. I tried doing an image search, but all I'm getting is a bunch of "oil painting with glare" type images, for obvious reasons. Anyone know how to get rid of the glare? Or perhaps they just know who the painter is.
