  1. Of course there's the obvious "I want $$$$" answer, but realisticly speaking, what should I tell her? She's familiar with the cost/nature of the hobby, but I don't want to completely stray her away from ever buying me anything audio related ever again with some extravagant want. So what should I tell her I want? It would be for something primarily used at home or when on the putor like now. But I would occasionally take it out wherever. Again, not expensive. So I was thinking along the lines of lower end Grados, K240, HD555, K81DJ, RP21, RP22,etc. Something lower end that doesn't give you sticker shock but is a good call. Basically, sub $100. Oh, it'll be dr…

  2. Hi everyone, I just thought of this poll that might be somewhat interesting. But then, probably not. I'm not sure how many Audio-Technica woodie fans are around here, but I sure am one. So basically what the poll above says. Do you think there will be a 45t anniversary A-T Woodie? If so, what would be your guess for the model number? Or rather, what would be the best in your opinion? - Nanoha List of A-T woodies in the past: 1996 - ATH-W10VTG 1997 - ATH-W10LTD (35th Anniversary) 1998 - ATH-W11JPN 1999 - ATH-W100 2000 - ATH-W11R 2001 - ATH-W2002 (40th Anniversary) 2002 - ATH-W1000 2003 - ATH-L3000 2004 - No woodie released. Continues to sell L3000. 20…

  3. Hello Head-Case, It has been a long time since I've been active here but, I'm glad to be back for something special for us E-Stat enthusiasts! We are very happy to finally announce our new Headphone – INOX. For the very first time in Headphone history, a Consumer/Production Closed-Back Electrostatic Headphone. There is a lot to uncover and I will try my best to give a brief introduction about the technical aspects and details of this new Headphone. Over time in this Official Thread, I would love to go over the stories and details of the many aspects that have gone behind this development which is impossible to cover in this single post. But, for now - …

I convinced my roommate to get a pair of W5000s, but too bad for him, he's out of town this week. I got permission from him to listen to the W5000s. So far I like what I'm hearing, although I'm not ready to say anything meaningful yet.

  5. It started with repairing a badly damaged shangri la jr driver 2 years ago, I almost rebuilt the set from the diaphragm to the stators, and of course the dust cover😦 The first thing I discovered is that the 'nano-technology' used by hifiman actually comes from the covering used by indoors aircraft model enthusiasts, the name is OS film and it is still available on ebay or https://www.indoorffsupply.com/shop/os-film-25ft-roll-1 the driver of the hifiman estats is completely glued which is similar to the early stax lambdas, but hifiman glue is significantly worse...after opening the driver i found that they only use OS film for their dust cover, the diaphragm…

Hi, I've spent the last week or so reading numerous reviews/forums for headphones and amps as I would very much like to upgrade from my current setup. Currently my headphones are some ath a700's that are falling apart. I don't own an amp or dac yet and the sound card I use is an x-fi titanium card I got for free from a friend of mine about a year ago. Future upgrades are certainly possible, but for the moment my budget is around $400-500. But this is flexible. I am new to this, especially in experience with different setups. Comfort is also a concern of mine as I will be wearing these very often. Some headphones I've looked a bit further into/am interested in at…

Hey all, I need some help here if anyone knows anything about Monster Headphones. My puppy got to the chord and im trying to splice it to a line from another high quality headphone i had it working at some point but when i went to go back in for surgery to Solder the lines i couldn't get them working again. Does anyone know the wiring setup ? I've looked online and everyone says different things. I have a Black, White, Green, Yellow and red coming from the headphones and then the line im trying to splice to is Red, White, Black and a wire with no insulation which i assume is the ground. Like i said i had them working perfectly before. Any help would be appreciated great…

So as the title says, my friend wants something that is on-ear. Mainly listens to rap/hip hop and big-room. Currently he's considering the overrated and overpriced beats solo 2. You can offer earphones too. Sent from my RNE-L21 using Tapatalk

  13. Started by aRc,

If you have several headphones at your disposal..and one or more has set idle for several months, you plug in and something is amiss. The phone in question has played for several hundred hours previously and is well broken in...but the Bass is threadbare and a bit lumpy..the treble is closed and has a nasal stridency, while the midrange is recessed and hollow sounding. Then after 2 to 6 hrs. of healthy playback things flesh out and the balance and tonalities also timbers are as you remember. Has the driver surround stiffened? Has the diaphragm itself loosened and lost the piston properties? Has the hole flow alignment that permitted electron flow closed, th…

Now here is something fun... a new electrostatic set from Russia. I do read the Russian forums a bit and I've been following the semi-DIY stuff going on over there. Seeing that this one had matured I decided buy one. Here is the website for anybody interested: http://phenomenon.su/ I ordered it directly and this set was custom made for me. They have two versions available and I picked the Libratum as I prefer circular transducers. Cost was less than 2k$ with shipping here. As you might tell from the pics, the build quality is super impressive and makes most other headphones look like toys. I for one like the Russian utilitarian style where it is all a…

  15. Hi guys, any of you own both? Or have you heard them side by side in a good setup? I currently have the W11jpn, and I am 100% sure of owning the L3000 in the near future (couple of months time). The thing is, I kinda have my eyes on something right now and I was wondering if I should sell the W11jpn to finance that purchase since I'm gonna need some quick $. To rephrase, is the L3000 different enough from the W11jpn to justify owning them both? Any of you miss owning the W11jpn after getting a pair of L3000? I'm generally happy with the W11jpn, but it could use a tad more punch and speed in the bass dept. and a little more detail won't hurt either. As noted below, t…

I was wondering what some headphone brands were that have vintage looking headphones. The ones I have on my list right now are Grado and Alessandro. Any help would be nice. That's really my only preference atm. Thx guys.

  17. hi I spent to years creating this baby but if I were to apply my old rule of "what to keep" in an audio rig then the whole headphone side would have to go. here is the rule: if a certain component gets less than 10 percent of playing time, then It is not worth keeping, no matter how good a deal it was or how much it is worth. The thing strangely is that ever since i hooked up my M-Audio DX4 speakers to the VDA-2, the sound has been satisfactory enough so that I don't feel like I want to switch to my headphones and do the whole "cable" and volume/zana deux thing. so my at home listening is now 85 percent or more speakers. the other development is that I've gone b…

A new electrostatic from Dan Clark is arriving -- the Corina. I've had the opportunity to try it and if you are a SR-007 person and not as into the 009/X9K, this is a fulfilling option. It does require considerable power, which the Stax mafia has been taking care of since ~2003 https://www.headamp.com/products/dan-clark-corina

  21. Started by Dusty Chalk,

Alright, you know me -- black is beautiful. So what should my short list be? Besides the O2's, which I will be getting at some point, just because they're black. Second best? I think it's a toss-up -- until I get my customized DT880, I won't know for sure, but at some point, I'm going to go through all the options and buy one. There would still be two places that it isn't black -- the cover, and the personalizable tabs. Either that, or the Audio Technica A950Ltd. I already have that one, so I'll probably keep both.

  25. Started by spritzer,

Well...these arrived this week via the Gilmore express and to make it easier for anybody looking for info on them, a new thread it is. As Kevin documented before, the amplifier is a dinky little thing and a direct clone of the Stax SRM-001. The amp is pretty much useless though as it doesn't have any volume control and you can't use it from a portable device as it needs a full 2Vrms input signal to reach usable volume levels. Here is a picture of the entire system plus what Kevin Posted: Opamp feeding a quad of fet's and into the output transistors. All AC coupled... Yet again another clone of older Stax stuff but onto the headphone…
