Grok Headphones in Fullness

  1. I quickly browsed through an article about headphone measurements in this month's Stereophile. It's worth a look.

  2. Started by Elephas,

I received a surprise package from Enigma Audio. I ordered three balanced cables some time ago, but I asked them to postpone shipping them to me until I had a balanced amp. Since my balanced amp is caught inside the SinglePower black hole space-time continuum, I forgot about these balanced headphone cables. When I saw the package, I thought that the box was a little big for a couple of ECC83 tubes, which I've been ordering recently. Surprise, surprise, upon opening the box I see the silver-gray anti-static bags with the Enigma Audio sticker. Fortunately, I hadn't forgotten what Enigma Audio was. I'm expecting to forget about what "SinglePower" is in a couple more mo…

I have a question would the Beyer headband fit over the sennheiser HD650 band like for grados? Im assuming the senn's head padding would be removed for it to fit.

  4. Started by bralk,

I have the L700 MkII and I find the headband pressure too high. I wonder if the original L700 headband would lessen the pressure as the “arm” of the forks are a straight construction without the bend at the bottom in the MkII model. Any “swithers” between the too models heamdband ?

  5. Hello, greetings to all, I wonder if anyone has been able to compare these electrostatic headphones. Thanks

Not quite sure where this belongs, so mods feel free to move this thread. So, me being me, I'm usually a little late to the party. I was in Best Buy today and came across the Boze frames, Bluetooth sunglasses. I listened to them and can really see a use for these when I'm away from home. The sound was certainly adequate for non critical listening, with the advantage of being able to hear voices, sirens etc... Does anyone own these? Would it be easy to adapt to Alexa? Are their better brands for the money? Style is somewhat important and I do like the rondo style, and the availability of accessory colored lenses, or even prescription lenses. Thoughts, impressions…

  7. So I am in the market for some closed headphones. I have heard grado's and like them, have heard AKG'S and like them. Read a few forum posts on HF and ran across the AKG 270P's. Since I have a pair of Sextett's and I like them, I thought maybe the 270P's might be a good fit. However, I trust the opinions on this forum a lot more than the stuff I read over at that "other" forum. So has anyone heard the AKG K270 Playback's? Anyone own a pair? I listen to a lot of different types of music, but I would use my closed cans for rock, hip-hop, and the occasional jazz session. Any opinions and recommendations are greatly appreciated.

For those who missed it (either on gadget news sites or Head-Fi), Shure has updated their lineup. http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/06/shure-shows-off-its-new-se210-se310-se420-and-se530-earphones/ Meh, nothing special though.

I need to change the headband pad on my HE90 but I've never actually done it before. Can anyone here talk me through it so it makes sense and I don't break something? I think the cups have to come off but I'm not positive. Any help would be appreciated, Gary.

  11. Started by Stoffie,

Hi guys, found my way here through another thread in another subforum. Have been drooling for years over a Sony MDR-R10 (bit of a Sony vintage gear fan), but there is no way I could afford it back in the '90, and still can't at the prices these go for nowadays. But anyway, as a kid I used to listen a lot through my dad's headphones, a pair of Telefunken TH-700 orthodynamic headphones, which I've always liked a lot. They were pretty expensive and Telefunken's TOTL offering in the late 70's. Unfortunately, through the years, the leather cushionpads have deteriorated badly, so they are not at all comfortable anymore to wear. I recently rediscovered these in a box…

I wish to replace/upgrade my broken, 20yr old Sony MDR-V404 phones. I have always been impressed with their sound. They are the only ones I have used for 20 years. I bought a MDR-ZX-100 for time being and they not close no cigar to the old ones. I am not a professional. I use my phones for making cd'swith my laptop: music/movie/you-tube. I like all types of music ezcept for rap and "new" country. For the most part I like classic -rock/hard rock/heavy metal/blues I have seen the 7506 on sale for about the same as the V6. My price window would be $80-$100. The earpieces on the V404 basically sit on the ear, while the V6 and 7505 look like they go completely over,( cant…

Does anybody have any experience with any particular ear protector ear muff thingie for babies? A friend of mine is expecting twin girls. He's the house photographer for an NHL team. Thus, there is a trip to a hockey game in the kids' futures. I assume this would be for your basic making a fuss over the cute babies thing, since I can't really see why infant girls would want to see a hockey game, even with a good team, which the Panthers haven't been lately.

  15. Started by Asr,

I've heard both but not at the same time and the times were too far apart, hence my own experience fails. Anyone else heard these and compared them? Normally I'd just go ahead and buy an SA5000 to find out but funds are running pretty low for me right now, was wondering how much percentage of the Qualia the SA5000 offers. I love the Qualia but it's an awful lot of money to keep to one headphone.

  16. Hello! I'm looking for a pair of headphones for my work. I'll be wearing them for about 4 hours every day to cut out noise and distraction at my station. I'm really looking for the sweet spot between Comfort, overall quality and price! (I have a budget of $100) I've done a lot of searching, and so far the Sennheiser HD 439 seems like a contender. Are there better models for the same price? any more options that I'm missing? Any help is appreciated!!! Thanks!

  18. Is it possible to remove a grado driver and leave the cup intact? I want to remove some drivers from their plastic housings without cutting up the housing. I watched the grado assembly video on their site and they just pop in the front and are secured with a little CA I'm guessing. My though was to cut out as much of the driver as I could, then soak it face down in acetone. What do you think?

ok my new senn 650s certainly do not sound the same as my old pair. same zu mobius balanced, same woodies. much less bass...more treble. burn in? new pads? or is that the wolff tuning pads?

  20. Well, After upgrading my Denon 3910 with the SACDmod + adding few extra blackgates around the dac for good measure, and recabling my K701s with mogami quad, now my system is quite a bit brighter, mostly due to the recable. 909 thought something was off with the recabled K701s which are now fatiguing. Iron_Dreamer and I also thought the high freqs sounded fatiguing when listening to Tylls recabled (cardas) K701s at the So Cal meet. I dismissed it as bad cable (cardas), but now that my K701s have the same problem with the mogami, I think AKG used the cheap-ass wire they did, to tame the highs and cover up the deficiency in that area. Now my tinnitus is flairing…

  21. Specs: Noise cancelling. Bass oriented. 2 driver Dettachable cable. Strong cable. I usually listen Trap, Chillstep, Ambiental music. Thanj you.

  22. In the "Measurements" thread, everyone could see that top-tier electrostatic and isodynamic headphones are more similar than different, having similar FR, CSD, square wave and impulse responces, isodynamics sometimes having better measured parameters. However, their sound is not the same. I have thought of 3 moments that seem to make difference between them. I must warn everyone from the start that I'm no specialist in these areas and everything below is wild speculation. 1) Air resistance and open area. ES drivers use very thin stator plates with high open area - more than 50%, it seems. There is minimum amount of trapped air and minimum stored energy. Isodynami…

  23. I saw these UE 10s on eBay two days ago. And thought if i could have UE in Irvine, about 35 minutes from my house, take my ear impressions then they could make customs to perfectly fit my ears and this might be a good deal. so i called UE customer service and to my surprise UE said no can do. a few hours later i called back and asked, if i am an original UE10 owner and two or three years later my ear canal changes as a result of wearing them, age, or gaining or losing weight would UE recast in the event they no longer provided a secure fit. again, the UE rep said no. she explained the recasting process could possibly damage the drivers. i am still a bit surprised-…

Here is a rather unique & rare planar headphone : Rotel RH-930 back-electret headphones. This is an OEM version of Toshiba ?HR-910.? The wikiphonia entry suggests 910 but the pics on this japanese site are suggest hat it is OEM version of HR-810. The transformer is built into the TRS plug & so it can be used with usual dynamic amplifiers. The transformer plug has three settings- H, M & L The driver is 65 mm. No backwave damping here. Most electrets are considered infereior to the 'electrostats' but back-electrets are a bit different. Check this wikiphonia link for electret driver principle: About the Sound : The first thi…
