New Single "Came Back Haunted" streaming now on Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/nineinchnails New Album Hesitation Marks out 9.03.13. Preorder available now on nin.com I dig the new single, but its hard to separate my joy at new NIN from my critical side. It has a great sound, more of an old schoolish dance/industrial feel, with some effects thrown in reminiscent of TDS-era NIN. Single has more of a steady pace, no huge heavy guitar parts or anything, but it still sounds great. NIN also announced a huge tour with supporting acts Explosions in the Sky and GYBE. In the immortal words of Trey Monkeystasio, get phacking pumped phannerz: Nine Inch Nails…

There's a new exclusive video on the Portishead website. You have make an account with your email address, but in my experience, the P do not spam. The new track is "Machine Gun" and it's pretty clear how they came up with the name. It's pretty abrasive stuff. Those expecting Dummy-era sedate trip hop will be in for a surprise.

The MP3 download that comes with the new Ryan Adams LP (Cardinology) has leadin/out groove and surface noise effects. Maybe I don't get out enough or something, but this strikes me as pretty strange. There must be a story behind it. Does anybody know? -Carl

For those of you who are living under a rock, Sarah McLachlan's Wintersong album is now out, got myself a copy the day it was released. Yes it's a christmas album, but it's got Sarah special touch, I actually like it more than her Afterglow album. Also out on CD is the full uncut version of Mirroball, this is a 2 CD set that contains the entire concert set. Yeah there's overlap with the Afterglow Live CD/DVD set but it's different enough to be worth it. While I was at the store I also saw the A Piano: the Collection which is the Tori Amos box set that comes in a piano keyboard. I didn't buy it but I took a look at the track listings and it seems pretty interesting. I'l…

I am a big fan of vinyl. I still have my first records that I purchased as a little kid in the early '70s and they are still in decent shape. I still buy a lot of used albums and several new ones. Here lately, my luck with new albums has been pretty bad. I bought John Prine's last record and it sounds good. I pre-ordered the reissue of John Prine's first album and it sounds awful. I have the cd and it sounds good. I recently bought Charlie Crockett's latest album. I knew that it should sound great because on the radio and on tital it sounds like it was recorded at Sun Records 60 years ago. The vinyl version sounds like it's being played on an old transistor radio in the n…

http://www.nytimes.c...dies-at-70.html "Nick Ashford, who with Valerie Simpson, his songwriting partner and later wife, wrote some of Motown’s biggest hits, like “ and “http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEcLuVhRbkU,” and later recorded their own hits and toured as a duo, died Monday at a hospital in New York City. He was 70 and lived in Manhattan."

I'm sure this isn't news to the majority of you since the announcement has been up a while. But Trent Reznor is remixing/remastering Pretty Hate Machine and it is due out in November. One bonus track that is a cover of a Queen song. And new artwork. "I’m happy to finally announce the re-issue of the first Nine Inch Nails record “Pretty Hate Machine,” releasing worldwide 11/22. UMe and Bicycle Music Group managed to locate the original mixes, so I went in the studio with Tom Baker and remastered it for a greatly improved sonic experience. In addition, Rob reinterpreted Gary Talpas’ original cover to make for a fresh new package. It’s been an interesting trip watchin…

An entire instrumental release from NIN? Well, Trent definitely has my attention. His work on Still was amazing. Anyone else checking this out? Seems like he's embracing be free of a major label. 5 options, ranging from a free download of I to a $300 signed deluxe set of I-IV, including vinyl. I tried to order it from nin.com but it was too slow... I couldn't get through. I'll be ordering the CDs tomorrow, which is scheduled to ship April 8th. But I decided I'd go ahead and order the 256kbps .mp3 version from Amazon for $5 to hold me over. I've set up the download so it should be all set for me in the morning. I'll be sure to post impressions once I've had a chance …

So I've been thinking a lot about how much music you folks have exposed to me and how grateful I am for that. However, it can be a bit daunting to look through the WAYLTN thread for genre specific stuff. So I thought, how about separate threads devoted to essential albums. By essential, I don't necessarily mean your favorites, but those albums you feel all "insert genre here" lovers should know. Let's say, one album per post; say a little something about it too. I'll start off: Sunday at the Village Vanguard-Bill Evans Trio I know, pretty obvious, but if you haven't heard it, you need to. These guys practically defined what it meant to be a trio. The inter…

I'm listening to a 24/96 needle drop of Black Sabbath's Paranoid. Exceptional drop from the first pressing of the USA vinyl. Comparing it to my retail CD (which is also an early pressing really good quality) and the difference is great. Hearing the impact from the drums, and weight to the electric guitar As if 300-500 mb FLAC rips weren't big enough
