Does anyone else find all of the flaming lips albums mix just awful? I dig the music itself, but the levels are super high and don't seem to vary much for a lot of the songs. I love Yoshimi, but the bass/keyboard effect on some of the songs sounds like it is clipping (but I don't think it is actually clipping, it is just the sound intentionally). I can't understand why they do this to the music? Sound like teh suck on even cheap ibuds. Bleh. Are the 5.1 surround sound versions of the cd's any better?

In April I'm going to New Orleans to see Ministry at the House of Blues. I'm pretty pumped since I've loved Ministry since 6th grade and have never seen them live. Touring with Al & Co. are two bands called Meshuggah and Hemlock. I did a little research and Meshuggah last night on amazon, and they sound like a pretty badass math-metal band. Hemlock I know nothing of. I'd like some albums recommendations for Meshuggah and Hemlock if any of you have any (Dusty?). Thanks!

I guess I shoulda said "For,..". The 2012 Monterey Jazz Festival was a treat for Potter lovers. He played with several groups over the weekend and I was able to records a couple of the bands. I've put up 7 new 24/48 files on my SoundCloud account from the festival and 6 have Potter doing his thing. The first group is the Metheny Unit Band and the second cut has Pat using the Orchestron (killer automated multi instrument partially controlled by air pressure which you can hear swooshing in the background). I've been listening to a lot of concertos while studying for the CPA exam. Generally I think my rock brain can handle compositions with a focus on a single instrument more easily than I can handle symphonies or even chamber music. I can latch on to that violin/piano/cello/whatever and let it be my guide. Care to recommend your most listened to concerto recordings? Pics or links or whatever. Either I can then buy it or be like "yeah I have that one its awesome". Composer doesn't matter. Thanks!

So... I subscribe to several BBC podcasts, most are from the output of BBC Radio 4 such as Thinking Allowed, Material World and In Our Time. I downsized the number to which I subscribed at the start of the year after I realised that I had no hope whatsoever of managing to get through an unheard backlog of over 4000 podcasts with an average running time of between 30 and 45 minutes. Some of them I'd never even listened to once and it was just the hoarder archivist in me which kept them. I now have a couple hundred unheard, but the number is decreasing steadily. So what new releases are you excited about? Me: I really, really dug their last two releases, Polarity and Vertical Theory, though I doubt this will be anything like that, based on the description. But I'll love 'em whatever they do.

As of late (and by late I mean the past year in its entirety), I have been radically drifting away from the current rock hits to the older stuff, the classic rock, as well as a lot of old Spanish music (Julio Iglesias in his younger days, for example). Though I still enjoy an occasional listen of the current stuff, I find the older stuff (made around the 70's and 80's) much more intriguing. Whether to attribute this to me getting older and thus requiring a more mature listening, or that the new stuff just doesn't seem as inspired/complex/imaginative/clever/etc as the old stuff, I cannot say. I've been listening to this Schumann Cello Concerto: and am looking for more like this, but maybe even sadder, with a greater sense of longing. It helps if there are lots of complex passages as well. Maybe just drop a few composers on me, and their specific pieces, and I'll hunt down the performances. obviously I'm a total classical amateur. so any help is appreciated.
