As some of you might know, I once played Slayer and Guns n' Roses on a Quad ESL-57 system. Surprisingly, the audio gods didn't smite me for this blasphemy, and thus it was learned that Quad 57's don't exactly rock. Recently, Biggie has mentioned playing Slipknot to stress audio gear, and Dusty Chalk admits to blasting NIN while auditioning speakers, while I've inflicted Metallica and Fear Factory on various systems. Which brings me to this topic, lots of people play Norah Jones, Diana Krall, and Miles Davis when auditioning systems or writing reviews, and then they oooh and aaahh at how warm, intimate and real it all sounds and give it an A+ rating. Which would be grea…

I'm going through the process of ripping my music collection in ALAC and I'm having a hard time finding a right way to tag classical files. I'm quite anal about tagging my music and keeping it clean, but with classical music, it seems like there's no proper way. How do you manage your collection?

It appears the record companies have once again decided to fuck up a catalog. All of the current Sinatra Reprise catalog will be OOP in order to make way for.......you guessed....horrible sounding remasters. If you heard Nothing But The Mess....er...I mean, Nothing But The Worst....no - Nothing But The Best and the horrible, LOUD sound quality then be prepared as we are getting more of that crap!!!! STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE NEW STUFF PEOPLE! Buy the old ones while you can or regret it later.

  6. A couple years ago I finally remembered that my DAC can decode hi-res digital so I got a bunch of music to see if 24/96 and SACD were any better than plain old CD. The results have been mostly disappointing for me, most of the hi-res recording sound different but not really any better than the standard CD versions; I don't get the extra space, realism, details, and sweeter highs that hi-res proponents claim to hear. I've tried a lot of different genres from jazz & classical to metal and I'd say only around 10-15% of the music is better enough to make the hi-res version worth it, the rest of it is either marginal improvements or just different but not better. Ov…

I'm currently listening to Lisa Stansfield's "All around the World", a tune that has a strong power to rise my spirits. In fact most of her first album can do that. There are many others, no matter how tough conditions are, that may help me to feel a bit happier. I suppose you have your own and may you like to share them. Some other Prozac tunes of mine Art Blakey - Moanin' Charlie Mingus - Moanin' Bob Marley - Three little birds Kool & The Gang - Celebration LV Beethoven - 4th movement of his 9th Stevie Wonder - Isn't she lovely

I'd been meaning to start this thread here, and then I saw someone had created on over there. So that was enough to get me to put some thoughts down on my favorite releases of 2008, which has gotten off to a great start with some fantastic albums... Kira Lynn Cain - The Ideal Hunter I'll quote a review I read elsewhere, which sums things up much better than I ever could... Definitely a great album worth some attention. Draconian - Turning Season Within Another strong outing from one of my favorite bands. More straight-forward songwriting than past efforts, with more female vocals and great atmosphere. Goldfrapp - Seventh Tree A very…

  9. I havent been following very closely on the SH forums, so this may be old news, but... I suppose the SACD will follow the vinyl at least half a year later, but maybe we'll get lucky this time.

I've really been getting into Multichannel SACD's and DVD-A's lately. Too bad they're all pretty much dead formats. And many of my favorites are out of print, and going for insane prices on fleaBay and such. Captain Hindsight says, you should've bought them when they were first out to begin with! OK my job is done here, goodbye!!! <whoosh> <sigh> -Ed

I think this might be the phattest drum beat in history. Blackalicious - First In Flight off Blazing Arrow. If you can get past Gift of Gab's ridiculous mc skills and Gil-Scott Heron's vocals, you'll hear this insanely phat ride cymbal and the beat will take over you. I'm not totally sure who plays it, but I think it is ?uestlove of The Roots as he has a writing credit on it and played on another song on the album. Song here: http://www.mediafire.com/?3xn6zoh0jtm Why not post the phattest drum beat you can find for comparison?

http://www.browntracker.net/ Very cool, I didn't know this site existed. Torrent site specifically for Ween and Ween-related goodness, and no lossy files! With the new album and the discovery of this site, I think I'll be getting back into Ween.

Not asking who you think is the best. But who do you find your playing the most when it comes to trumpet? Piano? Sax? Seems like I listen to more (way more) Lee Morgan than any other trumpet player, maybe more than any other jazz. Followed by Freddie Hubbard Wynton Marsalis Piano is not close either. I think Gene Harris rules! Gene Harris Bill Evans Horace Parlan Sax is all over the place, but seems like Wayne Shorter, Dexter Gordon and Jackie Mclean get the most play time

  17. I just noticed over on the Hoffman site that the current run of Blue Note reissues on 45 RPM vinyl will be coming out on SACD shortly. That is some very cool news even though I will have to figure out whether I want to cancel the vinyl subscription, double up some, or wait and see how they compare before making a choice. I will not cancel my other subscription to the Music Matters BN reissues because those are the most gorgeous LPs ever produced. Anyway, these remasters are so awesome that anybody who likes jazz even a little should be buying these things. Apparently $30 a pop, so that is $20 cheaper than the vinyl option.

I'm not sure how long South X Southwest has been doing this live stream, but they seem to have it down. And I'm sure sponsorship has a lot to do with which stages/bands get onto the stream but there's not much that I enjoy as much as listening to bands who I've never heard before. At this level, I think they all have something to say. Check it out. If you hate who's playing right now, check back in an hour or so (between bands they run tape from their archives). http://sxsw.com/live

At 2 am, me on lead vocals, my friend on guitar and backup vocals. http://download.yousendit.com/441B20A4642B386E We were fucking around, and realized at about 4 that we had recorded like 18 songs, then we did 2 more in the morning. All improvised. It's pretty stupid, but it does get better as it goes. The highlights are probably Merlin, Godzilla, For Pluto, Everyone's Sleeping... And You Should Be Too, and Lazy Frog. But really they're all great.
