Well, I finally got a nice job. It's half time for 4-6 months. After that, we see where we are and what the business climate is like. I know the tech-lead and this should be a fun job! I need to provide my own laptop for this job. I have a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 8600 that would probably do the job. However, I think that I'd be better off having a separate work computer. Other members of the team have recently bought this HP laptop. They did get it for $100 less but the price still is pretty reasonable. I've been pretty detached from computer hardware. Should I get this or would you laptop knowledgeable people recommend something else? This laptop will be…

They lost me at 720p, but maybe they won't lose you. Too much dosh for me as well, so I may have been looking for a way out. US$600 today only until 1600 BST, which I don't even know what that means, it may have already passed for all I know. IndieGogo link

I sent my laptop to get the charging pin replaced about a month ago. They did a fine job, but sent me a replacement charging cable/brick since the connector on my old one was a bit worn down. The replacement didn't exactly exude confidence in build quality It was working fine for a month, but just now I saw a spark in the middle of the cable which then caught into a small flame and burned a hole through the rubber covering. Fortunately it went out by itself and my computer wasn't damaged. If I had my camera I'd post pictures of the cable; it's not a pretty sight.

I know a few use more popular services (Blaze, etc.), but anyone have any comments on DrivePop? Not quite sure how they plan to keep the doors open with their unlimited plans, but the pricing seems right. http://dealmac.com/Drive-Pop-Unlimited-Lifetime-Online-Backup-from-50-/853785.html

So Julie was trying to purchase a book for one of the girls earlier today. She went to Amazon.com and was greeted with the login screen, not the usual amazon home page. She logged in and then the screen prompted her for her billing address to be updated. She entered that as well and then stopped at the following screen when the website asked for her credit card number and ssn. I came over and tried the same on my phone and macbook air. Same thing. I tried connecting to another wifi network and regular amazon website access. Same with the phone on LTE. Would reseting the wireless router kick out whoever might be causing this nonsense or should I just be changing the wirele…

I expect to upgrade my iPhone 3g to a 5 in the next couple of months. I figure it would be best if I convert my 21.5 iMac 3.06 to the latest 10.8.2 operating system. However, I am worried the 10.8.2 may still have a few bugs and since 10.6.8 has been so stable that a change may not be for the better. Any converters out there which could shed some light? I am also reading Mac Forums and Mac rumors to educate myself.

Since today's changes, I can't access head-case with my computer. Safari now says it can't find the server, and Firefox only gives a white page that won't let me do anything except refresh. I've cleared, reset and rebooted for nada. I'm on my phone now, but it only works sometimes as well. Any ideas? I can't be the only one, unless this is part of Nate's revenge plan.

Ok, so the game that I spent a good part of my formative years playing has been re-released for the Mac and I'm dying to try it again. So that leaves me in the somewhat awkward position of basically not wanting to spend much in the way of $$ on this computer. It certainly doesn't need to be much, specs are as follows: Minimum Specs - Mac OS 10.3.9 - G3 processor - 500 mhz - 128MB of RAM - 106MB of free hard drive space - Turn all special effects off to run at 15 frames per second Recommended Specs - G4 processor - 1.0 ghz - 256MB of RAM - 100MB of free hard drive space So what's the cheapest thing to look for that I can simply plug in in place of my exi…

Hey all, I'm thinking about buying my Wife a Mac Mini since she has been wanting one for some time now. I've been thinking this might be a good time to sell off my old computer and start building a new one since I will be able to use her Mac in a pinch. Should I part it out or try to sell it as a whole? Where should I sell it? I'm considering to get one of those services to upload myself some files, and eventually sharing them. Some of you are Megaupload users, others use Rapidshare, Sendspace... At this moment Megaupload is offering a lifetime service with no restrictions for under $200 which I think is a fantastic deal, but if no one else is using that service, it can become quite pointless for some of the purposes. I'd like to read your opinions and recommendations

I have a flat panel display using a DVI connector with a nvidia 6 series card. I moved my computer and when I plugged it back in as soon as windows booted up past the welcome screen the monitor lost siad "no signal". I booted it in safe mode and reinstalled the drivers and it booted fine but now the desktop is stretched out past edge of the monitor. If I move the mouse to the far right the screen scrolls to the right to reveal the rest of the desktop. Sorry if that isn't understandable I'll try to explain it better if this cannot be understood. The problem is that 1) my monitor is no longer in native resolution (1440 x 900) becaue it's being stretched and looks bad. S…

For those that have used a touchpad that available for a desktop computer, is this a good idea or lame idea? I need something that will work while resting on my thigh. I use my computer while I'm in an arm chair with the keyboard on my knees and my mouse on my thigh. The trackball isn't that great of a set up. It's awkward and when it falls off of my lap the ball falls out and roles into the nearest open suer grate and I have to fish it out with a piece of chewed gum on a stick. Are there many differences between brands of touchpads? Which one should I get? What's the best value for performance? It seems you guys know your computer stuff. Thanks, aaron.

I'm looking for something in the 900p to 1080p range that I can carry with me in a hard clam shell or something. Anyone know of anything? This is perfect, except ( a ) DisplayPort, and ( b ) 21 inches. I can probably find a way to carry 21 inches, and I can probably get a DisplayPort converter, but I thought I'd ask, first. Is there anything like what I want? I realize there are a bunch of smaller 768p, and they're even USB-powered, but that's usually just a tad too small. I'm currently using a 17", 1280x1024 desktop monitor, and that's perfectly fine. Cheap laptop with a similar size and resolution screen screen? Cost prohibitive, but if I can utilize the extra h…

Carmack is one of the smartest guys in the entire PC/gaming industries and I love hearing his keynotes. They are pretty technical, but very very informative. I have it on in the background while I'm working this morning and I'm really enjoying it. Link to part 1 (starts at 15:00)

Well my good fortune with anything electrical has continued unabated with my office computer choosing to sleep with the fishes on Wednesday morning. I am pretty sure it was the motherboard that died and not the hard drives (fingers crossed). There are a couple of important files I had not gotten to backing up yet on the old computer which I need access to at some point in the next few weeks. I pulled both the hard drives out of the dead computer and was preparing to download all the files today using my Thermaltake sata docking station when I discovered to my horror that the HDs are not sata but most probably ide HDs and the Thermaltake model I have only supports sata.…

So I'm finally going to do something about the sagging performance of my windows lappy. Right now it's got a hybrid drive in one slot and a standard lappy drive in the other, both 500GB. I don't think I really need that much capacity so I'm thinking all I really need to replace is the primary HD with a SSD with at least ~240GB to allow for application and some document storage with a buffer. Right now I'm leaning towards the Crucial M500 or Kingston V300, both of which are under $130 for the 240GB version. If there's a compelling reason to spend a little more I could be swayed. And while it doesn't quite double the price to get to 480GB I just don't think I need that…

I've got a small Apple wireless that I take with me on gigs. I usually plug into the local network and I can get out on the network, plus set up the wireless so that anyone else on a mac can leech off. At home I come out of the cable modem directly into my ethernet port. I've noticed that when I plug in the Airport Express my dowload times and browser refresh rates are much faster off of the Express than being directly plugged in. Shouldn't it be faster directly plugged in to the modem? Do I need a different ethernet cable perhaps? Just curious. I've had no issues with the hardware on my Macbook Pro...
