  1. I figured that breakfast essentials would include some fantabulous bottle of wine. For me, a burg. Mmm burg.

  3. I wish I could keep Mamma. She is a real sweetheart. But I live in a small motorhome, and there just isn't room. I will endeavor to find her and the kittens good homes. The timing is good, as the winter Texans return soon, and they're soft touches.

  7. I finally got the last plate machined. I had to replace the spindle on my CNC and also made a mistake on the CAD so had to redo this plate, but it's looking great now.

  10. Why even post that? I think we all know that. I think his point was that if you believe in the manufacturer's aural vision , then the best way to achieve it might be to find the same source and amplification. The way you said it takes all the art out of it. Now I don't personally believe that all manufacturers of high end audio are artists, but I think at least several of them succeed.

  12. The guy who is electronics design director at NAIM is called Steve Sells. Way back, I recruited him from University into Cambridge Audio, when he was already a power amplifier designer of some capability. After a short while, we moved that into Wharfedale, where we planned to re-launch the LEAK brand. I asked him to design the best power amp he possibly could, price no compromise. I told him that we had to out-Krell Krell, and if he felt that silver wired mains power transformers were essential, he could have them (he didn't - phew!). This was a superb animal, balanced input, bridged FET output monoblocks that would push 800W into 2 ohms, each with three mains transformers (two huge ones + and - for power transistors, and a single higher voltage one for the input amplifiers). Fast forward three decades, and NAIM told him the same thing, best possible no holds barred - Statement was the result. Not for those with less than seven figure salaries. An awesome audio tour de force. Have a look at this:

  13. It seems to me that series spawning from a movie have a hard time. The nature of a film doesn't lend itself well to an ongoing series. Top notch writers are a must for sure.

  14. I watched all of Limitless (the series.) I really enjoyed it, and hate it only got one season, but it did get one full season. It was silly at times, but played to its charms for much of it. I hope Netflix buys it to relaunch one day, as it has Dexter's sister in it, and brought back warm fuzzies. **BRENT**

  18. I would rather say that the HF mods were complicit in many ways, certainly when it comes to the Single Power mess. Now it's just profit driven to the max and anything that stands in the way of that will be removed. Who cares if people get screwed, there will be more suckers anyway. What really annoys me about HF is that nobody actually helps. Sure people ramble on about stuff they read or some half baked theories (let's sorb everything!!!!!) but when somebody comes with an actual question that matters? Nope...nothing...

  20. I used to be list admin for the XJ Jaguar list on www.jag-lovers.org. It had about 8000 members internationally. There were a number of parts, car modification and other vendors on the list, including Jaguar themselves. If someone slagged one of them off there were instant threats of a legal suit against the admin (me). I stepped out - I just did not need that level of threat. In fairness to HF (yeah - I know...) the list owners have to deal with precisely this, and will, or ought, to have told advertisers how they deal with what could be interpreted as libel.

  23. I agree with just about all that. At one stage you could buy thick rectangular washers the same size as a TO220 tab to spread the pressure, but they have not been available for years. I tried M3 PEEK screws on my build, but was unhappy with the very low torque necessary to strip the threads. In the end I used a combination of ceramic insulators (as specified by Kevin) and the really long insulating bushes, and stainless cap screws, nuts and Belville washers. My T2 was one of the first batch made, with casework supplied by Kevin, and I have had zero thermal problems.

  24. I'm in the near final stage of my GeorgeP cased T2 and talked to a EE hardware manager on my team at work about heat sinking. The discussion was useful so thought others here might like to hear what he said. Turns out he has a lot of experience with heat management, since dealing with every mW is his biggest issue on the platform and they've struggled with it for years. What they found is that the the only factor with heat sinking is air gaps, since air is an insulator. Torquing is only specified as a poor mans way from the manufacturer of trying to ensure there's no gaps. Beyond the normal smoothness you find on a heat sink that also makes no difference - it all comes down to having a thin layer of compound (ideally it would be zero but obviously we have to suffer with minimal compound) with no air gaps. It's so important for them that they x-ray every one, and they use no hardware to clamp the parts down - just normal soldering. The key is good technique in applying the compound and placing the part. If you do that right torque, lapping or anything else doesn't help. I explained my project and showed him pictures. On hardware he didn't like the idea of using steel screws with the HV silicon - he recommended going with the Peek screws for arc safety and again - using good compound application technique with the screw there just to hold everything together. Further on having all that aluminum and parts screwed together (IC's, brackets, sinks) he was concerned with creep. Ideally you attach to a 'hard' surface, meaning one without creep. A thin PC board is fairly hard, but aluminum isn't - he described it as 'mushy'. You can screw to it but over time the aluminum under the screw points will "flow" away from the pressure point. So, what they do (because everybody has to suffer with aluminum sinks) is to use a wide steel washer under the clamping bolt. This works well to ensure the bracket/sink stays together with thermal cycling. Otherwise he suggested a yearly physical inspection of IC to bracket and bracket to chassis to ensure a continuing tight fit. So, he recommends PEEK screws, don't over torque (or worry about torque at all), but be fanatical about compound application, such as using a non silicon based compound like AOS 52022KH for long term stability if you like. For attaching sinks and such he recommends using a wide steel washer (not a 'lock' washer) to spread out the pressure point. FYI -

  32. So about a month ago another kitty found sucker Steve. It's mixed coloration is weird, but cute. It's Black and Orange, in the funniest Jackson Pollock way. It looked very much in need of food and a friend. It took about two weeks before I could pet her, but once I did she decided it was the greatest thing in the world. She almost wants to be loved on more than she wants food. Also about two weeks ago, her boyfriend ( a Black cat) started showing up, and I noticed that kitty looked pregnant. Blackie is now a fixture here as well, and I've been worrying about the safety of the future kittens. I thought I had enough time to find her a new home before the birth, but this morning I realized that I had horribly miscalculated. It seems as though she was not pregnant, but lactating. She must have had the little kitties about the time she met me. I didn't pick up on it at all, but for about a week she's really been sizing up Susie. She kept getting closer and closer, then actually rubbing noses. At this point she's completely content with Susie's presence. And now it all makes sense. This morning, at feeding time, she introduced Susie and I to her family. I counted 4, but they are shy and there could be more. They look to be about a month old. I'm pretty sure she's moving them in, so Susie and I went to buy sardines this morning. No actual contact yet, but it won't be far off. They are so damned cute! Pics when I can get 'em.
